About Riccardo Trattoria

Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

Great food and service and the atmosphere was excellent. It was very convenient and we had plenty of time to get to the theater.

Very good, authentic Italian fare in a modest, neighborhood setting. Wine, food and service were very good.

Setting isn’t “fancy” - but is comfortable and family friendly.

We’ll keep it on our list when we return to Chicago on our next visit.

Intimate and charming with outstanding cuisine. Truest and most unique Italian in the Lincoln
Park area. Riccardo Trattoria is a long standing gem that is easily overlooked. But once you try it you will place it among your favorites.

Riccardo Trattoria is ONE of TWO truely authentic Italian restaurants in ChIcago. I lived in Florence, Italy and travel back to Italy at least once a year. Eating at RT is just like sitting in a little restaurant in Gaeta, Positano, Brescia or Milan.

Cocktails & Wine were excellent, food was very good. Two of our party had penne pasta w/langastino, two others had Osso Bucco, and one had Pasta Carbonera. Sides and apps included calamari, octopus, & garlic spinach. Tiramisu was our dessert. All were tasty and prepared to order. Restaurant is cozy, with one of our guests chairs being bumped frequently. Pacing had to be controlled as we felt we were being rushed at the onset. Our server, Sevan, was well trained and courteous. We would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to get out of the Loop and enjoy the Lincoln Park area.

Great dinner! Chose this place only due to its proximity to the zoo and we were plesanty surprised. Fabulous food that also comes in half portions for when you fill up on bread and apps. Great find!

Having enjoyed Riccardo's on many of our visits to Chicago we looked forward to a great meal with our friends.
We were going to be a few minutes late so called to let them know. Despite this, we had a wait of over one half hour before we were seated. To apologize, we were served a calamari appetizer, an appreciated gesture.
Our waited suggested a few of his favorites which were off the mark. Only a few bites of seafood in one of the pasta dishes was disappointing. The flavor just okay. All of us felt the pasta was too al dente. We've eaten Italian frequently enough to know better! Only one of our party of four enjoyed his meal.
I'm sure we'll try Riccardo's again, but this experience won't be a reason to rush back!

Outstanding Food and Impeccable Service. There are only 3 or 4 Italian restaurants in the city that I will being guests from Italy to, and Riccardo is on that short list. Highly recommended!

We have been going to Riccardo's for many years now, for nice dinners, for special occasions, ... We have never had a bad meal and some Italian classics, like the risotto are as good as good as they get. I hope Riccardo's will be around for many years to come.

This was our 2nd trip Riccardo Trattoria. I went here with my wife and her Italian friend for a 9:00 reservation on a Saturday night. In summary: the menu is vast, well thought out, and impressive. Unfortunately, the entrees were all poorly executed. It was a nice start with bread dish and bruschetta, simple and no cheese to top. Appetizers: Squash Blossoms: delicious and perfectly breaded to feature the delicacy inside (cheese filled speck roll) and small (nickle sized veal based meat balls with a somewhat creamy tomato sauce), nice density, a bit more than the usual meatball, but veal often presents this way. Good, not great.
Then downhill from there: Osso bucco over saffron risotto ($38!!!). The arborio had good saffron flavor and al dente texture but lacked any hint of the creaminess I expect in a risotto. On top of this rested a ~2.5 inch thick veal shank which was tight and sauce-less with no sign of the braising gravy goodness. It was a moisture lacking shank over risotto clearly sitting too long in wait for its shank.
Next was an under cooked (pre al dente) and poor attempt at carbonera ($18) . This plate lacked any peppery, fatty delicious bacon (traditionally guanciale lardon) egg and peccorino"cream" sauce that make a carbonera one of the magical dishes of Rome. Instead it was a healthy sized (almost bucatini ) noodles stuck on a plate with pieces of thin sauce-less bacon that ended up having 75% packaged to go in need of repairs at home. Dry and boring.
Lastly, was a sloppily presented Halibut dish over couscous ( ~28? not sure exactly). Nicely cooked fish resting on a tiny beaded and flavorful haphazardly plated couscous. Presentation on this was rushed and plated without care....just a mess. I am fine with this at the Olive Garden, but not here and at these price points.
Lastly, desert was delicious, a perfectly textured panna cotta .
Bottom line, too many far better Chicago Italian options.

Food was very good, probably not the very best in Chicago like some others have said. Complimentary appetizer was very good. We also had shrimp/calamari app which was also excellent. They didn’t have a kids menu but made some fettuccine Alfredo for my kids. There were specials but the server didn’t highlight them to the whole table. There were 6 of us and he only gave my wife some recommendations. A couple in my
Party enjoyed the ricotta ravioli but didn’t love it. I had the fettuccine bolognese. It was good but a little overly meaty in the flavor. Not as much balance between the meat and tomato as I would like. Overall, very good but we’ve definitely had better.

Try the veal, fava beans, zucchini blossoms, pasta, or seafood specials.

We have been going to Trattoria Riccardo since they opened and have never been disappointed. We live close by and always make it our “go to” place . The ambience, graceful and friendly service and of course, the food is extraordinary. The extensive and authentic Northern Italian menu is wonderful! Be sure to make reservations well in advance as it is always well attended. You’ll be happy you made the choice!
