About Riccardo Trattoria

Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

This was our second time at Riccardos and we will certainly go back again. The atmosphere there is perfect - small, cozy, and delightful. The food was good but my scallops and shrimp lacked flavor and the bacon surrounding the scallops was almost raw. And this time we felt a little rushed by the staff even though there were no customers waiting for tables. The veal Parmesan was outstanding!

OK place but we had a bad table near the door which was our fault for booking late. Very busy on the Saturday we went, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Filet mignon was pretty average and a small portion, wine was great.

Overall I think we'll give it another go but book well in advance and maybe just go with the pasta dishes. Service was polite and well informed.

Extensive and creative Italian cuisine! You can easily find some very good traditional dishes or some more fun and unique pairings. Great neighborhood find.

One poor thing to note, request to be seated more in back if possible. We were seated in a tiny corner by the front door with a high wooden wall. Felt a little claustrophobic and very cold and drafty with the front door constantly opening behind a curtain.

Riccardo's is one of my favorite restaurant in Lincoln Park. They greet you warmly and have excellent servers. I had foi gras to start - unusual for an Italian restaurant. It was perfect. The appetizer menu is so good, I just had 3 appetizers for dinner. Squash blossoms, and veal tonnato - all delicious

This is a traditional authentic Italian restaurant - takes you back to the 1920s in an intimate dining experience. The expansive menu is deceiving because every dish we had was excellent. Among all the wonderful pasta options are some recommended game - the elk appetizer and rabbit main course. Overdid appetizers, so we didn't get to dessert. Wonderful service.

We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant, its creative Italian cuisine - we came for the pasta and loved the dishes we selected. Mine was a spaghetti dish with asparagus tips and smoked salmon (delicious combo) and my husband had the rigatoni with sausage and he raved about it. We each chose a dessert - the tiramisu was delicious and the TORTA DI RICOTTA, which he raved about also. We each had glasses of the $12 pinot noir and it was good.

This cozy neighborhood charmer never disappoints. There are a surprising variety of daily specials and always available regular items, especially given the tiny kitchen. If you like a simple grilled fish, try the whole branzino. You can get osso buco as a main or as a sauce in meatball appetizers. The risotto is outstanding, usually four different versions. Lots of homemade pastas. Veal Milanese is crispy outside, tender inside. Friendly efficient service. Where the locals go when they want a big plate of delicious ! Kids made to feel welcome. No special kids menu but they will love the pastas.

Haven't been here for a while so hers my take on this trattotia:
Great food continues but you can see the wear & tear on this restaurant, feels run down so needs updating or at least fresh paint and better tables/chairs. My birthday celebration was awkward & terrible table arrangement for 7 people. A round table and a small rectangular table was put together, felt bad for my guests, not easy to have conversation. Server was just ok, seemed she had too many tables to take care, not attentive. Doubt we will ever go back even with such great food. NOT worth it.

Impeccable Italian food with a strong Genovese bent. Friendly, attentive service, cozy - we went early (at 5pm first seating) to catch a play afterwards, it was quiet for the first half hour but full by the time we left a little before 7 (three courses needs probably 90-120 minutes total). They're very good about serving food to share between a couple, I think this is the way to go, because half portions over multiple courses were actually still a little too much food. Nice wine list, some great Italian options. We had fava con pecorino e tartufo, which was divine, and then a special risotto gorganzola and an orecchiette with boar's head sausage. The risotto was excellent, al dente, but the orecchiette was divine. We then had a special pork cheek served with beans - I have never had meat this soft, the texture was incredible, and excellent polpi (octopus). We were too full for dessert - my fiance had wanted the risotto but agreed we should have dropped it so we could have dessert. Overall, this is among the best Italian I've had anywhere in the US, I can't recommend it strongly enough.

Very good, authentic Italian fare in a modest, neighborhood setting. Wine, food and service were very good.

Setting isn’t “fancy” - but is comfortable and family friendly.

We’ll keep it on our list when we return to Chicago on our next visit.

Intimate and charming with outstanding cuisine. Truest and most unique Italian in the Lincoln
Park area. Riccardo Trattoria is a long standing gem that is easily overlooked. But once you try it you will place it among your favorites.

Riccardo Trattoria is ONE of TWO truely authentic Italian restaurants in ChIcago. I lived in Florence, Italy and travel back to Italy at least once a year. Eating at RT is just like sitting in a little restaurant in Gaeta, Positano, Brescia or Milan.

Cocktails & Wine were excellent, food was very good. Two of our party had penne pasta w/langastino, two others had Osso Bucco, and one had Pasta Carbonera. Sides and apps included calamari, octopus, & garlic spinach. Tiramisu was our dessert. All were tasty and prepared to order. Restaurant is cozy, with one of our guests chairs being bumped frequently. Pacing had to be controlled as we felt we were being rushed at the onset. Our server, Sevan, was well trained and courteous. We would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to get out of the Loop and enjoy the Lincoln Park area.

Having enjoyed Riccardo's on many of our visits to Chicago we looked forward to a great meal with our friends.
We were going to be a few minutes late so called to let them know. Despite this, we had a wait of over one half hour before we were seated. To apologize, we were served a calamari appetizer, an appreciated gesture.
Our waited suggested a few of his favorites which were off the mark. Only a few bites of seafood in one of the pasta dishes was disappointing. The flavor just okay. All of us felt the pasta was too al dente. We've eaten Italian frequently enough to know better! Only one of our party of four enjoyed his meal.
I'm sure we'll try Riccardo's again, but this experience won't be a reason to rush back!
