Riccardo started his career at a very young age in Milan's prestigious "GIRARROSTO" family owned. Then, in 1982 he moved to the United States and he opened the famous Sonny Bono's in Los Angeles. In 1987 he started to work with his cousin Roberto Ruggeri (owner of Bice's Venture), with him he opened Bice New York, Los Angeles and many others around the world.

Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."

Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation

Classy without being overly pretentious. Riccardo Trattoria is one of our favorite Italian restaurants around.

Ratings 8.0-8.5:The best way to think about restaurants in the low to mid 8′s is that these are the places you would absolutely go back to, anytime. These restaurants are ones that you want to bring a friend to, just so they can also experience the duck carnitas, or burger, or whatever dish the place is known for.

Wonderful birthday dinner, especially enjoyed the desserts -- panne cotti (complimentary for birthday) and Napoleon. The tomato and cheese on skewer was very good, but not hot when served. Our brother and sister were really pleased with the food.

We went here after a show at Second City and celebrated a birthday. Our server, Paco, was very friendly and attentive! We had a group of 10 and everyone loved what they ordered! We all said we would be coming back. The restaurant is very small but I made a reservation almost a month in advance. Looking forward to coming back to try other items on the menu!

The owner always makes us feel welcome. The black truffle burrata and prosciutto is spectacular. Truly, a unique dining pleasure!

This is our third or fourth visit to Riccardo's and we drove 60 miles from northwest Illinois just for Easter dinner. We have never been disappointed with the food or service and enjoy seeing what new creations are on the menu. If you like good authentic Italian food made with the best ingredients, this is the place!

Riccardo Trattoria was one of the most "authentic" Italian restaurant experiences I have had in over 30 years of living in Chicago, a city known for many fine Italian restaurants!
The menu, ambience and even conversation with our Italian waiter made me think that I was truly dining in Italy, the country from which half of my family hailsbb.
Please keep up the excellent service and authentically Italian dining offerings at Riccardo in Chicago, a city which too often in dining goes for the glitz and forgets the "real deal"...

We live in the neighborhood and are never disappointed! The food is excellent and everyone knows it so do not expect a quiet evening. I would NEVER go without a reservation and, if possible, avoid the prime dinner hour. The food and service is excellent. The staff is very professional and always ready to give suggestions if asked. ...even when the place is very busy. We prefer reserving at 6:30 when the room is almost full and the rush is just starting. Keeping the above in mind, I think you will have a memorable evening of superb Italian food with many choices not usually found these days.

The restaurant is extremely small so the only downside is that even with a reservation you could be waiting for awhile. This did happen to us but luckily they brought out a glass of wine for everyone in the party on the house. Dinner was fantastic. The service was phenomenal. We will continue coming back here.

I picked this place as an out of Townes based on online reviews. I was not disappointed. The service was good, food delicious (try the tiramisu!) and the wine selection was nice. It’s a cozy little spot but very enjoyable.

Come to Chicago 1 time a year and always come here. Closest to eating in Italy and I know, as I have a niece who lives there and have been to visit her 2 times. Although the service started out slow, the waiter picked up the pace and the rest of the evening was great.

The feel is very authentic.
I am glad that they are still busy, but they seem to have added a few more tables and I don't like to be right on top of the people next to me. I like a bit of privacy.

Very reliable, it is all about the food. Had a reservation for 8pm, got seated at 825 but they immediately gave us a fried calamari to compensate for the delay. The fried zucchini blossoms are outstanding, the seared tuna is amazing and the saffron rice balls, wow. Always top food.

After my first trip to Italy in November, I was convinced that I would never find a true authentic Italian restaurant in Chicago. WOW! Riccardo Trattoria is that place. Small, lively, friendly and attentive service, and the food is AMAZING! I had the Branzino and it was so fresh and light. It pretty much melted in my mouth. I will definitely be back. Next time I am taking my friends that went to Italy with me so they can re-imagine themselves back in Roma and Florenza.
