Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."
Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.
We stopped for restaurant week with an 8:30pm reservation. For 3 people, it almost took 2 hours from sitting down to walking out the door - time between meals and the bill felt too drawn out considering we sat down at the end of the rush. All of our entrees were okay, but nothing incredible. We had a wonderful waiter who was very helpful and insightful about the wine and dinner options. I would be interested in trying this place again, but it's not somewhere I would highly recommend to others.
This was the second time here. Our first was just average and our most recent was very disappointing. I just don't know where the great reviews come from. We ordered the pasta fagioli which was lukewarm, tasteless and definitely felt the kitchen used a thickening agent because it was very pasty. I had the osso buco and at $36 was ridiculously overpriced for the portion size, let alone the quality of the meat. Have to say the worst osso buco I have ever had. My wife had the lamb shank and it also was a very small portion size and it flavor was just average. Both were served with rissoto which like the soup had a thickening agent added which made the item tasteless. Our server was very good so nothing to fault there, but will not be coming back again.
Pleasant service and educated servers. Food selection was excellent.
best italian food in chicago. hands down. truly authentic.. takes you to a bygone era when food tasted special and the servers were personable and kind and professional. wonderful wines, amazing desserts.. the chef is the owner and he's been cooking for decades... hails down from an illustrious italian family that has been cooking for almost a century. nothing quite like it in all of chicago. first time i came here was in 2004 where i was introduced to fresh artichokes, the concept of al dente pasta, the different wines of italy, and the idea that eating out at a place like this symbolizes the special moments we seek when we break bread together in a kind setting...
Food and service is out standing and is never disappointing. Been coming here for a long time and keep coming back for the fantastic food.
Probably my favorite Italian restaraunt in the city!! The Gnocchi is incredible. The service is on point always.
As always, a perfect experience!! Love love love Riccardos!
Very disappointed in this highly recommended restaurant. Service was attentive and friendly, but the food was tasteless. We ordered Ossobuco, but the sauce and the saffron risotto that accompanied the veal had hardly any flavor at all. We enjoyed a special mousse appetizer and Cioccolatissimo dessert, both of which were excellent. Sadly, at these prices, probably would not give it another try. There are better Italian restaurants in the neighborhood to visit.
54th Birthday celebration. Could not have been better. Excellence in every respect.
Amazing all around
Riccardo’s was unbelievably good. You could tell the pasta was made in house, everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Literally every dish we had was delicious and I would order again. The tiramisu was the best I’ve ever had- including in Italy and what I’ve made at home! I highly recommend this place for any occasion.
Wonderful small authentic Italian restaurant. Superior food and service. They have so many great things on the menu that it can get pricey but it's a very satisfying experience.
We have been coming to Ricardo Trattoria for several years now and it’s by far one of our favorite restaurants in all of chicago! You truly feel like you are in an authentic Italian Trattoria! I would recommend this restaurant over and over. We have never had a bad experience and will be back again and again!
Wonderful as usual. Great staff. Best restaurant
Come sempre, la cena è stata ottima! Grazie per una notte fantastica!
Best gnocchi ever, octopus tender and delicious, fava beans make you want more. Wonderful experience!
good food... excellent menue friendly service the menue has things that you don't get at other restaurants
Some of the best Italian food in the City especially at the price point
First time at Riccardo Trattoria and the experience was great from the moment we entered until the moment we left. They were very busy when we arrived and didn’t have our table ready but they were very good at keep us informed and you could see they were working to get us seated as soon as possible. The table service was terrific as was the food. Look forward to going back soon.
Good food and service but atmosphere was dull.
Dinner and service was excellent!
The food, service and overall vibe are always consistently great.
Great food and service
Fantastic as usual! We are regulars, in the neighborhood & LOVE Riccardo Trattoria!
Love this neighborhood gem!
Birthday dinner for my daughter. Everyone loved the food, one of our favorite restaurants !
Visiting my uncle in Chicago. I took him out to dinner every night I was here. This was the best- from beginning to end- wonderful salad, amazing linguini with clam sauce, and great dessert. Service was excellent- relaxed, friendly, and attentive.
Have been to Riccardo’s many times and it’s always amazing! I actually dream of their white truffle risotto all year and try to come several times when they’re in season. Last night we shared that as an appetizer and I followed with sole piccata and chocolatissimo for dessert. All was perfection. Can’t wait to go back!!
Excellent service. We had the veal, it was prepared perfectly. The waiter made a great choice of wine to pair with the veal.
Amazing! One of the best Italian dinning experiences we have had. We will be back!
Fish was not up to par. I'm sticking to pasta and risotto next time.
Amazing meal with great service!! Small, intimate restaurant with top notch food! How I wish I lived in Chicago so I could dine here much more frequently!!!
White truffles from Alba were the special. $55 for allegedly 5 g on pasta. The truffles were NOT shaved table side, just came from the kitchen with an unknown amount. The pasta clearly had truffle oil in it to “enhance” the dish. Were out of a Barolo on the wine list, then gave me a 2014 other wine instead of the 2013 listed on the menu. Won’t be back.
I'm a big fan of Riccardo Trattoria and have been going there for years. I've never had a bad experience. last trip there nothing was mind blowing but everything was really good!
Food is outstanding. Atmosphere much like an old NY Italian restaurant with no tablecloths and wooden chairs. We did wait over 15 minutes for a table we had reserved. A bit annoying as the waiting space is very small, just inside the door and separated from the dining room by a velvet curtain. Not a comfortable place to stand for 15 minutes. Otherwise, highly recommended. All entrees were wonderful - including liver and veal. Vitello tonnato appetizer is excellent - and not often found on menus these days. Noise level was annoyingly high - and to put a dent in conversation. Try a weeknight.
Waiters have repeatedly been less than average in service and attitude
Cozy atmosphere Great food. Excellent service. Great wine list.
I recommend this place!
A wonderful Italian neighborhood restaurant, It was worth the hour drive at rush hour.
The food is just amazing, always consistent and authentic. I feel like I am in a Trattoria in Rome.
I like the ambiance of the place, typical trattoria. Tables are a little close to each other. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The food was all very good. The list of wines is extensive but just a couple of bottles have affordable prices. I made a reservation indicating that this was a birthday occasion, but this time the restaurant failed in bringing the usual dessert with a candle. Overall the experience was very good.
