We put in our order at 5:30 and our entrées arrived at 6:40–we had a 7 o’clock curtain across the street plus the vegetables were so undercooked as to be inedible. In addition the menu never changes, plus it is so noisy one cannot hear a thing.
Great place for a date night. There was a larger party in our section so I think that’s why the service was a bit delayed at first. The food was amazing and the service that followed our order was great. The prix fixe menu was awesome, it’s a must for any first timer. We will definitely be coming back.
Once again, another delicious meal at Revival. It was the perfect spot to dine relaxedly between matinee and evening performances at Berkeley Rep. I loved the beef cheeks with polenta I had, and my friends loved the duck. We shared fries (they make great fries). For dessert we had the AMAZING burnt honey panna cotta and the delicious rhubarb crisp (I'm not a fan of rhubarb in general, but the topping was plentiful and delicious).
Had a great time at Revival. Great food as usual. Always good food. Great desserts.
My only major quibble is why this restaurant serves warm water and when we needed to ask our wait person twice to bring us iced water. In general, the service was not up to the same standard as the quality of the food and drinks or the pleasant ambiance. Some of the waitresses were dressed way to skimpily for this type of restaurant.
Great food, admirable staff. They were slammed since we were there for the dinner break in between the matinee and evening performances. Still, we got there promptly after the show and had to wait to check in. Evidently, they didn't have enough front of staff ready to work starting at 5:00. Pity; we wasted 15 minutes at check-in which caused the rest of our meal to feel even more rushed as it was.
Excellent food and reasonable prices for the quality experience that you get. Perhaps a little more training for the front of house staff might be in order when it is expected to be a busy night.
I eat here regularly, mostly because it is convenient to my work, but the food this last time was soooo good. I had the mezze plate and the black garlic puree was out of this world. fish was also fabulous. and staff is always lovely.
On our way to the theater we spotted this place... I can't believe that we had missed it for as long as we've been attending Berkeley Rep. So we decided to try it out. WOW! WOW! This was the sentiment of everyone in our party. From the moment that we were welcomed to the moment that we left, we felt that we had gone on a food journey, complete with excellent service, excellent food, and amazing ambiance. I won't recommend any dish because it seems that everything in the menu is just excellent, but definitely leave room for dessert... definitely!
I have been to this restaurant a number of times and have never been disappointed in the food or the service. Great choice for a meal.
As always, the food was sensational, wonderful menu great taste and fresh. One of the party had food sensitivities and the kitchen was great about tailoring a meal that full complied, but tasted wonderful. Service was thoughtful and timely. Thank you for making a pre-theater event as good at the event itself.
Extremely expensive and doesn’t back it up. Small portions and not great. It’s swinging above it’s weight. The space isn’t as nice as he prices either.
Service was very poor. Arrived at 6:15 and ordered at 6:30 and food had not arrived at 7:30
Revival always has a creative menu with choices that differ from one another. The flavor combinations are unique and easy to enjoy (No crazy organ meat that only a foodie would try). The atmosphere is festive and the bar is beautiful. They were really busy on this last visit so they ran out of my first choice on the menu, then the waiter returned to tell us that they ran out of my second choice as well. But the chef created something off-menu that was delicious. Our waiter was outstanding.
Great food & service! Loved the mushroom toast for brunch.
The food was great, the servers considerate . WAY TOO noisy before theater time, and the service was disorganized. Not good for conversation, but the food was excellent, and we'll return.
Food was excellent. We were there during the pre-theater rush and the staff was frantic. We had ample time, but we felt they were rushing us to order, eat, and leave. Go after the theater crowd and you’ll probably find it better.
Great service, kitchen was great about accommodating my gluten and dairy allergies
I like the bar and light menu at Revival but have never had a full meal there. We went for lunch before a matinee at the Berkeley Rep Theater down the street. The restaurant is conveniently located near the BART station, so it was easy for us San Franciscans coming over. My husband had the challah French toast and got more than he could eat. (I would have tried harder...) I got the spring omelet which came with a delightful fresh salad. The staff was nice but the host who greeted us was very professional and welcoming. Great overall experience. I think we're going to try dinner next.
Service was horrible. We had about three-four waiters and two bus boys, and still had to help them all do their jobs. We got our starters before our cocktails (which where both good - oysters, arancini, and gem salad and punch, whiskey sour, and "Vicki"). Was delivered the wrong entree (2 out 3 ain't bad - right?). Wine came almost after completing the dishes, (2 short ribs and arancini - all good). Then dessert was not delivered. We were headed out the door when they handed us a to go box, by one of the ONLY competent wait staff. When we ate it, it had fallen apart and became a mushy mess (pavlova).
Food was fresh and tasty. Great spot before Berkeley Rep show!
Revival has best desserts in Berkeley and creative changing menu, healthy ingredients and tasty combinations. The main dishes dinner price went up and may be considered overpriced, but in my experience comparatively to other similarly priced restaurants this one is a winner in quality and creativity. Plus the atmosphere is very nice, the waiters are very good. A place where you can bring visiting family, business partners, romantic dates, fit for a simple friendly conversation (unlike most modern places no need to scream to be heard).
One of the best destination restaurants in Downtown Berkeley! Conveniently located near Berkeley Rep, BART, UC campus, etc. Atmosphere is lovely: high ceilings, art nouveau/boho chic, with two wooden bars to accommodate daily happy hour. Elegant dining area, with ample seating for intimate date or large party (they also have beautifully appointed private room available for parties). The food is exceptional. Tender cuts of meat, fresh ingredients, unique takes on old standards (ribs, steak, fish, etc.), lots of flavor, creative (but not pretentious) seasonal menu, and locally sourced ingredients. Fabulous happy hour and Sunday brunch. I obviously love this place, lol! It's my go-to before seeing a show at Berkeley Rep. They even have prix fix "show" dinner til 7 pm. Oh, they also do brunch and offer a once-a-month burlesque show that brings in talent from as far as New York city. Super fun date night!
Great, as always. Been here many times. The food is always good, often excellent. One of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley.
Revival is close to Berkeley Rep Theater and so is a go-to place for dinner pre- and post performance. Although the menu is somewhat limited what is offered is prepared well and enjoyable. I probably wouldn't eat there as much as I do if it wasn't so close to the theater. It's "okay" just not great or memorable.
Great food. Service a bit slow having nothing to do with the server at all (she was great). It appeared that the restaurant was short-staffed or under-staffed. Other than that, the please is great!
Revival is a welcome destination for dinner before Berkeley Rep or the Aurora. I've been there twice in the last week, and found it very acceptable. It's a lively, noisy place, but the food is very good and the service both times were attentive and courteous.
We go to this restaurant about once a year. In the past the food has been ok. This time the food was outstanding. Great duck and scallops, excellent salads - all very good. However, the service was horrible. We arrived at 5:50 for a 6PM reservation and told our waitress that we had to make a play at Berkeley Rep at 8PM. Should be more than enough time. WRONG. It took a
good while for our cocktails to arrive and then we couldn't get a glass for a beer even after asking twice - third request worked. Then we waited more than 35 minutes between the 1st and second course. We asked twice when our food was arriving, and were told any minute, but it did not arrive. Pretty sure the waitress was trying to wait us out to see if we would purchase another bottle of wine. We couldn't get our water glasses refilled without asking multiple times. One of us was getting the pre fix dinner which included desert, but the waitress forgot and there ended up being very little time. We asked that it be delivered immediately, and the waitress brought it in a to go box. Then we couldn't get the check brought to the table. We barely made it to the theater in time. Would not recommend this restaurant which is too bad because the food has really improved. Whoever is running the front room needs a serious wake up call.
Food was over priced and tasted awful. I would never eat here again.
Great ore-theater meal and very convenient. Casual ambiance and fun!
Regretfully, it was far less than perfect. While our waitress was helpful and friendly, the organization was not well oiled to handle a full crowd. The main course came out lukewarm; clearly it had been pre-made and not well heated, or sat around before being delivered to the table. The food had the potential to be quite good, if not for that. A second glass of wine ordered when the main course was delivered arrived as I was finishing the meal. We decided to cut our losses and skip dessert. For the price, it should have been darn near perfect.
Delighted to meet the owner. Amy
Revival always a favorite of our entire family. Like the Vegetarian choice s.
This is basically a bar that also serves food. Sort of. In our visit, it seemed grossly under-staffed and overwhelmed. Servers were pleasant, but service was very slow. We had the beef with turnip & greens, and the duck leg with pureed parsnip. They were acceptable but not worth a return trip.
We all agreed the food was fantastic. The service is very friendly, and the owner is a doll. Highly recommended!
Good food, great service and wonderful atmosphere. Vibrant enetertaient spot without having to go to SF. Will continue to recommend Revival.
My friend and I had a really nice meal between the two Angels in America shows. I especially liked our waitress whose name unfortunately I don't remember. Dark hair piled high, great demeanor and service, vegan I believe she said. The oysters were great along with the terrific french fries and the bottle of white wine. I would say the only problem - and this is when the restaurant gets busy - is slow service behind the bar. Seems like three people have to deal with all the bar orders. Luckily we chose a bottle of wine and that came right away. To sum up, we couldn't have been happier with our meal.
Been to the revival several times. Wait staff is usually good though overworked and seemingly understaffed. Food has been inconsistent. Dry ribs one time moist another. That past Friday I ordered the scallops and salmon roe. The price was 19+, what I received were two scallops and a slight sprinkling of roe. $19 dollars. Also we were the first seated at 5pm. I had to get our own drinks at the bar because there wasn't a server In Sight except for two waiters having a spirited conversation and never looking around to see if there were patrons. First seated and we received our appitezer after 20 minutes. We have given the place a chance because of our commitment to Berkeley rep theatre and its close locatio ,but we'll now find somewhere else to spend an average of 120 dollars a visit even if we have to walk a bit further.
Very noisy even tho I asked for a quiet table and we came at 5:15. A quiet table near the window was available through our dinner but we weren't seated there. Somewhat odd menu with fairly limited choices. Last time my main arrived completely cold. I ate it because we had Aurora tix and there wasn't enough time to wait for a replacement. I mentioned it to our waiter when he went by and woman who seemed to be a mgr came by. She offered to replace it but I explained the time problem. She then said "I'll see what I can do" Apparently nothing since I heard nothing more and no adjustment was made.
Someone needs to stage a revival, a laying of hands, and casting out of demons. I’ve been to Revival four times in April, with uneven but overall good experiences. Though this time they definitely saved the worst for last.
Service was decidedly unfocused up front with heart notes of rude indifference. 2/3 of the dishes ordered were lukewarm when they arrived at the table. We were made to wait 30 minutes for the bill. All in all a terrible experience made all the worse because I was hosting visitors from out of town.
There are no excuses for this. Do better.
We had a generally ok experience and a very pleasant server but the restaurant was packed on a Saturday evening and under-staffed so service was very slow.
Food is great to medicore. Service is great to terrible. But it is so convenient to Berkeley theaters that we come back often, because when it works it ‘s perfect.
