Revival Bar+Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Poor service. 10 Minutes seated before we literally had to go find a waiter to acknowledge our presence. Last two of four entrees served 15 minutes after the first "set" was delivered ... only upon flagging our waiter to investigate. He was very nice, but way too harried. Lamb shank entree tasted downright bad ... poor flavor and undercooked preparation. Revival probably gets away with substandard, overpriced food and service only because it looks pretty. But it is not able to handle the pre-theater crowd. This was our third attempt ... wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Revival failed the test again. Don't waste your money expecting a fine meal.
We told our waiter of our theater plans and were assured that it was no problem. We were completely ignored for 35 minutes between the appetizer and the main course. Even when we signaled our waiter, he turned and went away. Tables around us who had arrived after us, were served before us. When we finally got someone's attention they assured us that our food was nearly ready. It was ten more minutes. By then we had to hurry through our food in order to get to the theater. This is not the first time this has happened at this restaurant. We won't be returning.
The food and ambience for Sunday brunch was good, but the service was terrible (understaffed?) We sat at our table for 10 minutes before anyone brought us water or took a drink order. The staff tried to deliver us the wrong meal/drink twice. We probably waited 40 minutes for our food. It was tasty, but don't go there if you're in a hurry.
We have been there often and it was one of the best meals (eggs benedict/smoked salmon/on potato dill cake) we have had. However, the service was the worst we have had. Our server was fine but she seemed to be alone. It wasn't even close to crowded. It is a bad thing when you have to get up to find someone to help you and retrieve your own wine menu. And really, when a customer gets up, don't do any explaining, just apologize, maitre d'. Not one of Revival's better days.
We had been to this location when it was Downtown, a upscale restaurant with a stage for music and flamingo dancing now and then. So coming to Revival meant the inevitable comparison. The decor was rustic chic, exuding warmth and familiarity. The hostess and waiter were pleasantly welcoming and attentive. I chose the Mighty Howard cocktail and was delighted with its complexity. My husband and I shared a half dozen oysters, the persimmon and pomegranate salad, and the half rack of smoked baby back ribs with coleslaw and cornbread. Plenty of food for us to celebrate his birthday in style. We will be back.
Ordered drinks and food, then waited 30 minutes before getting anything, only to be told they didn’t actually have the bourbon we had ordered. Waited another 10 minutes for replacement drinks, and still no food. First course was tasty, but we waited another 30 minutes for the second course, which was partially burned. Cancelled the second round of drinks and our entree after they still had not arrived following the second course. The waitress and manager were both less than apologetic when we said we wanted to leave. Really unfortunate experience, as the menu looked good and the place seemed to have potential. The couple next to us also threatened to walk out.
I've had five star visits here. This was not one of those.
Bar substituted a drink without asking first.
Very sad little piece of swordfish for 31 dollars.
Ribs served with anonymous vague sauce
Lukewarm coffee with a bunch of grounds in it. Waited an eternity for cream and sugar.
I'm a big fan of Revival. We eat there alot. It gets super busy on weekends but sometimes you can get a quick drink and meal at the bar. It is friendly and lively. I love the clientele and often had great conversations at the bar with complete strangers. It is a very comfortable and friendly place that is probably my favorite restaurant in downtown Berkeley. The service this last time could have been better since it wasn't busy. I think it was a staffing issue and our server was friendly enough. The food was particularly great this last time. My 12 year old daughter got ribs that were just falling off the bone and she was overjoyed to have a really special meal as well as a delicious fresh drink. I shared duck with my husband and it was cooked perfectly. The french fries with aioli are amazing and we get them alot. We eat every last one! Overall, I would say there are few spots I enjoy as much as Revival. It is a bit pricey but worth every penny. Hope it will never leave!!!
The food was OK. The service, once we ordered the salad and main course, was amazingly fast. However, after that it was disastrously downhill. We ordered dessert and coffee. Coffee came about 10 minutes later, with sugar -- I asked for artificial sweetener, and the waiter either didn't know anything about it, or took me much too literally, because after he told me they had none, the hostess showed up with Stevia in the Raw. OK, it's not artificial, but sheesh. It's non-caloric sweetener, and the waiter should've known that's what I was after.
The worst part, however, was that 25 minutes after ordering, we still had no dessert, in spite of the waiter's reassurances, frequently, that it was on its way. We had to cancel it altogether, since we were on our way to a theater performance down the street.
Inexcusably poor service, and we might not go back there again. It ruined the experience altogether.
The atmosphere was nice and the only good thing about this place...Our waiter was disinterested in serving our table. The sauce on our ribs was lackluster and the meat was ok, nothing special.
Waaaay too over-priced for what you get. PLUS be wary of the 20% automatic tip on your bill for parties 8 or larger. AND an additional tax on your bill.
To make the experience even worse, one of the servers did not wash his hands when he left the restroom and proceeded to handle food...GROSS GROSS GROSS.
WILL NOT be COMING BACK!
The perfect spot if you're looking for a good, fun, delicious place before a night at Freight & Slavage, Berkeley Rep or the UC Theatre. Food is always first rate, unpretentious but excellent, attentive and kind servers. And steps from Downtown Berkeley BART (which is a godsend if coming from SF.)
Shared a wonderful dinner at Revival with my mother. Loved the paté plate appetizer, and the garden salad and the lamb shank, leaving all our plates clean! The ambiance was warm and comfortable. The wait staff attentive and kind. Looking forward to getting back there another time.
At last! A restaurant where you can have a conversation without shouting. Food was good. We chose a few tapas plates to share, which was just fine for pre-theater dining. The taps were much more interesting than the main dinner choices. Good attentive service, and quick when they knew we were going to a play.
The food was excellent. There was a power outage before we arrived and the service was very slow at the beginning. We were sitting for 15 minutes before our drink orders were taken. They might need a bit more staff for a Saturday night. Once the waiter started taking care of us the service was fine.
We always have a great time at Revival. It was particularly exciting to see the new seasonal changes in the menu since our last visit a month ago -- the Autumn Mezze plate was outstanding!! The cocktails and food were all first-rate, and the service is both warm and efficient. Thanks everyone! And, needless to say, the monthly burlesque dinner shows are a treat... (and support a great cause, Planned Parenthood). Much love to Kiki La Chanteuse.
Revival has several things that are rare: very good food that is also organic (they should emphasize this more!) in a very pleasant setting with a noise level (between 5 and 7 pm, at least) that allowed my friend and me to talk comfortably. Also: great service, from someone who actually understands why organic is important.
It is less expensive than appears from their online menu - actually I spent half of what I'd expected/feared, as the smaller portion is plenty of food, and I'm a good eater. And then of course there is location, for theater goers. Altogether this restaurant was a great find for me.
This was my second visit. The first was a private event dinner prior to a Berkeley Rep play, and the second was dinner before another Berkeley Rep production. You can't beat this place for convenience to BART (Downtown Berkeley), and the theater. Also great for Freight & Salvage events. I was slightly disappointed that the great values offered for Happy Hour are at the bar only, so be warned. The dinner menu is a bit expensive but the offerings are sophisticated. We had opted for sit-down full service meal. Tangerine Dream cocktail quite tasty. We chose a chicken liver pate and a delicious cheese from the charcuterie section. Really enjoyed every bit and good to share.Fig and persimmon salad quite nice, if a bit sweet, and the fish entree and and a dish with meaty trumpet (or was it oyster?) mushrooms also hard to fault.
There were six of us. People trickled in a little at a time and the waiter was fine with that. We were given good recommendations for things to share and a good wine to match. Everyone felt that the small dishes were unique and that the menu lent itself to group sharing, the dinner was special.
Very hospitable and great service! The food was not the greatest ever, but the convenience to Berkeley Rep can't be beat. We had the Mezze app which was good to taste a few different things. I have the squash and my husband had the fish. Both were solid presentations and flavors went well together. The cocktails were probably the shinning star of the evening.
