Revival used to be our favorite restaurant, best food ever ... ambience still nice, but menu changed and only one of our dishes lived up to old expectations, service was also not so good. It took a very long time to get our drinks, they brought all the dishes out at once (appetizers and main), the wine was definitely corked and the manager denied it (although they did bring us another bottle). We are very sad about this - suspect management/chef changed.
The food is very good though quite overpriced. But for a group looking for a pleasant, upscale restaurant in downtown Berkeley, this is a good choice.
Great spot for great food!
They accommodated my large party with breeze. Their menu has a good variety on it because I have meat eaters to vegans on my business crew lunches which makes I️t hard some times to go places.
The service was fantastic and the chef even came out and thanked us and told me about the start of the restaurant which was a very cool story.
It’s the great hospitality, menu and atmosphere that will have me coming back next time I am in town!
Love Revival! Sumptuous salads. Tasty gnocchi. Creative dishes. Lovely, comptetent service. Sometimes things are uneven, but last Saturday night everything hummed. Couldn’t have been more pleased.
Post concert dinner
Always enjoy before going to nearby plays at Berkeley Rep or Aurora.
We came on a very busy Friday night before a concert at Freight and Salvage. Despite being nearly overwhelmed by the abundance of customers in the space, our server was very helpful and attentive. The food was excellent and came quickly, so we had no difficulty making it to the show. There was a bit of confusion with the bill (we received that of the adjoining table and vice versa), but it was all sorted out in good humor. My only negative comment would be that the drinks took a rather long time to come.
Yummy avocado toast and mushroom toast!
The food quality was good, but the portions on the small size. The service was both slow and inattentive. Lighting was poor. This is one of those restaurants where, if you get the wrong seat, you have to use the flashlight on you smart phone in order to read the menu. Not a terrible experience, but I'm not sure I'd like to go again.
Among the six in our party, about nine different appetizers or entrees were ordered as well as three desserts, and everybody was extremely pleased with everything ordered.
Lovely atmosphere and service but food was pretty mediocre for the price, especially for a special occasion. Tiny, barely bigger than a muddle sized oysters and whist tender the short ribs didn't have any flavor. Desert, salad and wine were nice.
We ate there before the theater at the Aurora.A pleasant enough place with good service. The onion soup was good. The lamb shank was plentiful and enough for two people, but not worth struggling through. Excellent lamb ruined by a heavy handed and witless cook. Same for the brown butter ice-cream. Who ever thought that fried butter in ice cream would please any one? They did okay with he expresso coffee. A great pity as it is really conveniently located.
Nice atmosphere with excellent farm to table food. Ricotta Gnuddi with mushrooms was savory satisfying vegetarian dish, and baby back ribs were falling off the bone tender and smoky. Will definitely go back.
This was for brunch, not dinner like I'm used to from Revival.
The food was high quality, but during our visit there was some expediting/timing issue in the kitchen. Add to that an apparently new server and it was a recipe for slow and inattentive service. The server kept putting drink orders and bills down at the wrong tables, water glasses sat empty for tens of minutes, and the server seemed unaware of food delays from the kitchen until we got a little rude about it - but we weren't the only ones complaining that morning about slow food delivery.
I never had such problems with Revival for dinner service. But the number of diners was low and so there was only that one inattentive server and their manager on the floor. I think if the server had more experience, they could have covered the number of tables with customers at them easily, but they were pretty much in the weeds, even with help from the floor manager.
It twas disappointing given how good my experiences have been with them for dinners.
Still, because we had about 1:45 hours set aside for a leisurely brunch, we weren't late for our matinee movie. But 1:45 hours is pretty long for a casual brunch.
The service, ambiance were both great. I loved the burrata app we got but everything else wasn't as good as I expected. I got the Box crab with risotto and the meat of the Box crab was almost liquidfied. It was clearly older and it's gastric juices have already had a field day with the body of the crab. We also got the duck confit dish and it was ok. It was slight salty but good.
Great food, great service and ambiance. Good value.
Perfect Valentine's Day date. We had duck leg confit with several sides and everything was delicious.
Great food, service and ambiance. Not cheap, but high quality. Very conveneint to theater if that's your gig!
Excellent food, great service. A bit noisy, but not too bad.
Service started out great, but deteriorated after our order was placed. Different servers brought the dishes and at the end of the meal it was very difficult to get the bill. Food is OK but not outstanding
Enjoyed it thoroughly.
The street was busy and parking was a bit tough, but there is a parking garage a few blocks away ;)
Revival is my 'go to' place whenever I have an event to attend in Berkeley, usually the Berkeley Rep or the University Museum. It never disappoints in the quality of food and service, and my friends and I always love the fixed price 'theater' menu - delicious food, portioned appropriately so you can enjoy three course but not be in a food coma. Energetic and fun place to be, always!
So fabulous - we had a fantastic meal and evening altogether! The food is BEYOND - expertly prepared, the service is knowledgeable and attentive, the ambiance is warm and festive. TWO THUMBS UP!
party of 6, good food, good service, great place to have drinks and food for downtown Oakland location. Parking not that bad since a lot is one block away. Food was enjoyed by everyone (international group). Good wine selection.
Service was friendly. Joe was awesome and was able to accommodate a late addition to our group, and a slightly later reservation from our original. Food was very good. Didn't realize it was restaurant week, but ate off that menu. Had Osso Bucco - fabulous!
Would go again.
Service was slow. We were told they were short-staffed. Otherwise great!
Service was excellent despite. I had the quarter rack of ribs, which was just the right size. The ribs were unbelievable, tender and fell off the bone. The custard I had for dessert was incredible. This restaurant is worth a repeat when in Berkeley.
We went for Berkeley Restaurant Week, this was one of the few participants that actually offered great choices at a great value. Kudos to Revival for respecting their customers! We tried every item on the restaurant week menu, and it was all good. Appetizer choices were varied--we loved the orange/radish/greens salad-- and generous. The vegetarian entree was outstanding, like a tasting plate of differently cooked vegetables, very flavorful. The pork shank was large and cooked to fall-off-the-bone perfection. The accompanying polenta was quite heavy. Desserts were wonderful and perfect portion size.
I know this is a popular pre-theater spot, and it would be a nice (if a bit pricey) place for a drink, but I wouldn't stay for dinner again. We had cheddar fritters (ok but blah), a small lamb chop (way too much fat but tasteless meat), and a pork chop which was ok--the potatoes were good. Service was erratic and at the end we got barely warm coffee. Given the hefty by-the-glass price, the syrah wine was poor as well. It's too bad, it is a great location, and the decor and atmosphere are attractive.
Small and boring menu. The food was ok, nothing I would go back for. Overall disappointing. The most frustrating thing was the lack of choices. A beautiful Restaurant, but the food and service was just ok. Not worth the price.
This is a good place to go if you have reservations at the Berkeley Rep. Its just right up the street and they are used to getting people out in time for the shows. Food is really good. It can be a little noisy, especially if you are in the middle of the room. Ask to be at a table farthest from the bar.
We often eat at Revival prior to going to the Berkeley Rep. It's convenience, delicius food and good service have been our experience. I have some diet restrictions and the kitchen is very accommodating. Two comments about our recent experience...first, the lamb shank was delicious, but waaaay too much food. I can't think of a way the portion could be smaller, but it's enough for two people to share, I think, with a few extra veggies on the side. Second, what happened to the flourless chocolate cake? The item on the menu marketed as such was a chocolate mouse/custard of some sort--definitely not their delicious signature flourless chocolate cake--too bad!
Revival Bar & Kitchen has the best spareribs in town. I didn't even need a knife because the meat literally fell off the bone. The sauce is really tasty and the accompanying items were also quite good.
rocked New Years eve with surprise service at midnight
Food arrived before the wine and was cold. The taste was good but it was apparent the food had been sitting around.
Popped in for an early NYE’s dinner- server was great, cocktails well crafted, and food was delicious. Very nice atmosphere.
We miss what Revival used to be. We miss the flat breads, the excellent wines, the sumptuous kale salad, the top-knotch service. It’s still a good option for pre-show dining, but we miss the early days.
Salad was good. Food was just ok, no flavor. Duck was greasy. Service is cold but ok but at least she asked us if we were attending a show to make sure we were out in tine. Ambiance is great. There aren't many choices of places if you want to walk to the shows. They should get a decent cook and nicer wait staff.
Not much vegetarian and gluten free on menu...
We have enjoyed our dinners at Revival in the past, however this night, though we were the first seating at 5:00 on a quiet night, service was slow and our meals lackluster.
