Revival Bar+Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
The perfect spot if you're looking for a good, fun, delicious place before a night at Freight & Slavage, Berkeley Rep or the UC Theatre. Food is always first rate, unpretentious but excellent, attentive and kind servers. And steps from Downtown Berkeley BART (which is a godsend if coming from SF.)
Shared a wonderful dinner at Revival with my mother. Loved the paté plate appetizer, and the garden salad and the lamb shank, leaving all our plates clean! The ambiance was warm and comfortable. The wait staff attentive and kind. Looking forward to getting back there another time.
At last! A restaurant where you can have a conversation without shouting. Food was good. We chose a few tapas plates to share, which was just fine for pre-theater dining. The taps were much more interesting than the main dinner choices. Good attentive service, and quick when they knew we were going to a play.
The food was excellent. There was a power outage before we arrived and the service was very slow at the beginning. We were sitting for 15 minutes before our drink orders were taken. They might need a bit more staff for a Saturday night. Once the waiter started taking care of us the service was fine.
We always have a great time at Revival. It was particularly exciting to see the new seasonal changes in the menu since our last visit a month ago -- the Autumn Mezze plate was outstanding!! The cocktails and food were all first-rate, and the service is both warm and efficient. Thanks everyone! And, needless to say, the monthly burlesque dinner shows are a treat... (and support a great cause, Planned Parenthood). Much love to Kiki La Chanteuse.
Revival has several things that are rare: very good food that is also organic (they should emphasize this more!) in a very pleasant setting with a noise level (between 5 and 7 pm, at least) that allowed my friend and me to talk comfortably. Also: great service, from someone who actually understands why organic is important.
It is less expensive than appears from their online menu - actually I spent half of what I'd expected/feared, as the smaller portion is plenty of food, and I'm a good eater. And then of course there is location, for theater goers. Altogether this restaurant was a great find for me.
This was my second visit. The first was a private event dinner prior to a Berkeley Rep play, and the second was dinner before another Berkeley Rep production. You can't beat this place for convenience to BART (Downtown Berkeley), and the theater. Also great for Freight & Salvage events. I was slightly disappointed that the great values offered for Happy Hour are at the bar only, so be warned. The dinner menu is a bit expensive but the offerings are sophisticated. We had opted for sit-down full service meal. Tangerine Dream cocktail quite tasty. We chose a chicken liver pate and a delicious cheese from the charcuterie section. Really enjoyed every bit and good to share.Fig and persimmon salad quite nice, if a bit sweet, and the fish entree and and a dish with meaty trumpet (or was it oyster?) mushrooms also hard to fault.
There were six of us. People trickled in a little at a time and the waiter was fine with that. We were given good recommendations for things to share and a good wine to match. Everyone felt that the small dishes were unique and that the menu lent itself to group sharing, the dinner was special.
Very hospitable and great service! The food was not the greatest ever, but the convenience to Berkeley Rep can't be beat. We had the Mezze app which was good to taste a few different things. I have the squash and my husband had the fish. Both were solid presentations and flavors went well together. The cocktails were probably the shinning star of the evening.
There were good ingredients and the lamb shank was quite good. The persimmon/fig salad had great ingredients but there were only 5 small slices of persimmon on a large salad and tons of endive so it felt out of balance especially calling it a persimmon salad.
Been twice. One very good except bar service was extremely slow
Second dinner. Tuesday. Still terrible Bar service. Next table could not order alcohol free beer. Several menu items not available for our 6:15 reservation. Decent hamburger. Cold terrible fries with burger. Poor service.
We had a 5:30 reservation on a Sunday night before Berkeley Rep and apparently so did everyone else. We had to wait 15 minutes for our table to be cleared and set up, as they were short handed on staff. We ordered almost immediately but waited 45 minutes for our food. The kitchen was backed up and unable to handle the pre theater rush. Either the restaurant gets more staff or staggers the reservation times. What we experienced resulted in all of us saying we would not go back before Berk. Rep. Had to rush through the meal and had to talk very loudly to be heard by others at our table.
Disappointed with service. Half the food came out for 3 people and the other 3 waited at least 10-15 minutes. My French toast was burned but no time to wait for another one. Overpriced I know now why it was empty when we walked in at 11:45 am on a Sunday. Won't be back.
I made a dinner reservation for 10 people after a show at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The food was good, but our server was terrible! She was not attentive to our group, snippy when we asked questions or needed something, in in general not customer service oriented. We had to wait 15 minutes to get our menus because they had to be printed and copied and we had to wait fifteen minutes on the back end of our meal o he our check. The bill my boyfriend and I shared with another couple had several errors and it took us a while to settle up the bill. We would not have given her a 20% gratuity if it wasn’t included on our bill. I shared my feedback with the manager Dan about the good and bad of our dining experience.
Terrible service. Had to ask for waitperson twice before she came after we sat at our table for nearly 15 minutes. Waited another 15 for drinks to arrive. Forgot husband’s dinner and it didn’t come until rest of table was almost done with meals. No offers to comp meal or apologies for sloppy service. Unfortunately, 15% included in bill, although was not earned. If I could give less than 1 star for service I would. I have been to Revival a number of times and service has always been spotty. Service this last time was inexcusably bad. Told the waitperson and she could have cared less.
Although its a noisy restaurant, its possible to find tables where you can carry on a conversation without screaming. We like this restaurant for pre-theatre. The service is prompt and they have a variety of options on the menu, which changes frequently. I'll add that the flourless chocolate cake is delicious. I need a dairy, bean, onion and gluten free menu--yikes--and the server and kitchen does a terrific job of accommodating that combination.
We were going to a show at the Berkeley Rep and some friends said you've GOT to go to Revival Kitchen it's fabulous... so we did. Maybe we hit an off night- I had the mussels and the broth was delicious, but the mussels were almost non-existent. There were plenty of them, but when I opened them there were two plump ones and the rest were strings. I felt as if I had bread and broth for dinner. My sister had the pumpkin and trumpet mushrooms for $26.00. The waitress described it to us saying it was delicious, but the dish didn't fit her description. WE couldn't quite figure out why it was so expensive - maybe it was the mushroom??? It was very loud- but we have come to expect that when we go out. Our waitress was delightful.
The place was packed so it must be good... we just didn't have a great experience.
On this, the third visit, the experience was unhappy. In spite of identifying time constraint (we arrived shortly after 5 and the Berkeley Rep performance starts at 7), we were not served our main dish till 6:20. The appetizers were, as usual, terrific, the rest OK at a price that was a bit on the high side. The waitstaff managed, but the kitchen is no longer up the task.
WE have been going to Revival fairly often lately, since it's so convenient for pre-theater or concert dining. We've found the service a little inconsistent, but genuine. Last week, they were out of sweet vermouth, which we found weird. Otherwise, the cocktails are good. The food quality has been a little inconsistent as well: we had the kale salad and the fried calamari two weeks in a row (I know we are a little boring). The first time, the kale salad was to die for, and the calamari was OK. This time, the kale salad was OK and the calamari were excellent. This week we ordered the "famous" pork chop. My husband and I split it, since it truly is a huge portion. Our friend ordered it as well -- his was cooked to perfection. Ours a little over cooked.
All in all, we will continue to go, simply because it does have a really good "vibe" and the food is good overall. It would be nice if both the service and the food quality were a little more consistent.
