Unfortunately it was our first visit to Restaurant Michael! it was so good, service was very attentive and the food (Duck a l'orange and osso buco) was delicious. How had we never heard about it?! we will be back again. Also met the chef, Michael who was charming - welcoming, friendly. Enjoyed our evening very much.
Went for a special dinner for my Mom's 75th birthday. All in all a great evening. There was a minor snafu at the beginning, in that I parked adjacent to the restaurant, but on entering was asked where I parked and then told to move my car. The adjacent spaces are apparently reserved for the more exclusive and co located Trois George's. It would be better if they would mark the spots accordingly. The booths where we were first seated are suitable for 2 persons only. We were reseated much more comfortably at a table. Food was amazing. The Loup de Mere and duck dishes highly recommended, and the deserts especially the Grand Marnier Creme Brûlée a masterpiece. I met Chef Michael on the way out, and he was very friendly and gracious
We went for the Christmas special menu. We were disappointed. We expected a festive atmosphere. There were not holiday decorations, the place was rather somber. We were seated in an “overflow area” not in the main dining room. It seems that they were short of staff and the staff were rather harried. The food was excellent, as usual, but the ambiance and service were rather disappointing.
We went at 6:30 on a Sunday evening and restaurant was full. Food was outstanding and ambience very good but service was slow even for a leisurely fine dinner. Brought our own wine and no corkage fee was a Sunday draw. Will go back but hope for faster service.
This was a dreadful evening in every respect other than the company of friends. Food was inexcusably slow and substandard. Service was non-existent: we even had to pour our own wine and wait 1:15 for bread. Apologies were entirely inadequate. Wine list was frightfully overpriced, as was the food for its quantity and quality.
Highly recommend the restaurant EXCEPT on NEW YEARS EVE! 2nd seating people were subjected to a long standing for half and hour and more while early diners enjoyed their long, leisurely meal U disturbed. Didn't take our coats, check us in or acknowledge us in any way. Last holiday dinner we'll plan there!
I have eaten at this restaurant many times over many years. The food and service have been very good. The wine corkage policy, however, is constantly changed. The current $50. corkage policy (waived on Sundays) is both absurd and offensive. It will discourage me and I am sure other collectors from dining at Michael's in the future. There are many other fine dining establishments that are substantially more welcoming to individuals who appreciate great wine with their food and have substantial personal collections. It would be perfectly reasonable to allow only one bottle to be brought, to not allow in bottles that are on the restaurant's wine list, etc. But a $50 corkage is outrageous and unacceptable.
Let be first start by saying that the food was overall good. WE arrived for our reservation and waited 50 minutes before we were seated. WE were not offered a drink and overall the restaurant felt hectic. When we were seated we again waited for a menu. I was pretty hungry as it was over an hour after our original reservation time booked. Everyone was very nice and apologetic but it took a while to get any bread and they gave us one small sized bread roll with an abundant amount of butter. The appetizers were good, I had the scallop and crab cake which both were good but not amazing. The entree's were spot on but the portions are small for the price. The dessert was also good. It was expensive. The price was no where to be seen but for three courses it was about $68 per person. It was my brithday and I indicated it on the reservation and on my follow up phone call but they didn't do anything special which was sort of a bummer. Overall it was good but pricey. Service tried their hardest and they were pleasant but the restaurant was too busy which took away from some of the relaxation of the evening; there were soo many people waiting that several parties left. I would not go back because I think its too much money for what you get.
Thanks to the entire staff of Michael for giving up their Christmas Eve to provide a superb evening. As always, the finest restaurant on the north shore offered the very best of food and service. Despite being challenged by an extremely busy night, the staff remained pleasant and interactive. Thank you!
Note to Open Table diners - Michael is moving to Yelp for future reservations. Hopefully this is a decision that both provides a financial benefit while still filling seats in the restaurant.
Had another wonderful experience at Michael. Ordered the Venison (wow unbelievable knocked my socks off delicious)! Also for someone who doesnt like pumpkin pie i was hesitant about pumpkin pie soufle but i had confidence in my man Michael to deliver and he did with the pumpkin pie soufle perfectly balanced .
I want to go back as soon as possible!
My wife and I have dined at Michael on several occasions over the years. It is always a treat to see and taste expertly prepared meals consistently. The service and timing is impeccable. We have dined many places in the world and we consistently have some of our top restaurant meals here. We can't wait until the next time we visit for a special reason.
This was our first time dining at Michael after having driven past its understated facade many times. It won't be our last! Not only was the classical French cuisine superb and the service tip-top, but the restaurant's quiet and absence of screens or loud music made it a perfect spot for enjoying an excellent meal and conversation. Definitely worth a drive!
I have eaten twice 'chez Michael' and I was quite happy both times. The food and its presentation is wonderful. It comes closest to a Paris bistro that I have experienced in the Chicago area. At the most recent visit, the only defect was that the salmon was undercooked (raw in the middle) in the combo plate of whitefish/salmon. The selection of wine is very extensive, but the restaurant needs improvement in the way it serves the wine. I ordered wine pairing with my four-course menu and it was almost funny to see the waiter run with a glass of wine to bring to me after each dish has arrived. A suggestion: please bring an empty glass to the table, then the plate of food, and immediately have the sommelier present the wine and pour it. This would greatly improve the experience. I will check soon if Mr Lechowicz has read this.
Another spectacular dinner at Michael. This is the best restaurant, hands down, anywhere. You will not find better food or service. Love the Sweetbreads and Escargot. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Service is always perfect. We will be back as often as we can.
From our warm greeting upon our entry, to being seated at a spotless table, to the intelligent and polite demeanor of the clean fitted dress of the bus boy, including his hair..., then onto our gracious waiter, Mandy, we could surmise, this place is very special, and could count on the food being of superior quality..., and, truly it was.
We, and others' we know, will return.
Consider, per the confirmation, add a line to where to park. While we parked adjacent (but moved a orange cone), we were advised that the spaces are for the smaller dinning room. The line to add - "park just south - bank lot, or on the street.
