The best French restaurant on Chicago’s Northshore. Pate, Salmon, sweetbreads and service were excellent.
It's hard to believe people aren't lining up out the door to enjoy perfect food, old school professional service, unassuming decor and quiet atmosphere. Lovely place for my husband and I to relax and enjoy the good life! Cheers!
We really enjoyed going there with our friends. The food is very good with just the right size portions. The atmosphere is ideal....quiet enough for easy conversation, white tablecloths, soft lighting and knowledgeable wait staff. The service started out great, however, we waited an inordinate amount of time between the salad and main course. My husband and I ordered souffles for dessert (you need to order them while ordering the rest of your meal so they have time to prepare them) and they arrived well in advance of the server even asking what the other 2 people at the table wanted for dessert. We ended up sharing our souffles with our guests and were completely finished with them when our guests' desserts arrived. I would definitely return to the restaurant for the food, but be more proactive in asking about my next course. We spent more than 3.5 hours for our 4 course meal.
This is our second time at Michael and the restaurant did not disappoint. The food was superb and the service was very well planned. We were celebrating the birthday this time and did not want to rush. The staff was very knowledgable about food and drinks and made many suggestions. Thanks again for a great time!
Disappointed by our latest visit to Restaurant Michael. The cuisine wasn't as good as we remembered (too heavy, meat was overcooked, ...) and the service was also not up to the usual standard. I believe the chef is concentrating his efforts on the George Trois and may have taken his eye off the ball where Michael's is concerned. Such a shame.
Enjoyed the food and service very much. The portions were abundant for a French restaurant. The background dining music could have been a little softer and more romantic instead of the interpretive jazz they were playing.
During week seems “off”.Maybe weekend better. Food fine, but attracts strange clientele. Not sure why that happens. Strange means like nouveau riche or others playing at being sophisticated.
Outstanding⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you enjoy a fine dining experience, there is no place better than Restaurant Michael's. Quietly elegant, with supurb food and expert service.
Delectable meal with fantastic service. We look forward to dining again in the near future.
Another outstanding evening at Restaurant Michael! We live in Downers Grove and make the trek up to this special place at least once a quarter. I'm on their e-mail list and called for the special lobster/champagne menu on a Saturday night only to find it was specific for Friday only! Chef Michael and the team were so accommodating and saved 2 of their Maine lobsters for us and recreated the entire menu just for us the following night! Now that's service!
Lobster quenelle in morel mushroom sauce, petite salad with a vanilla and orange vinaigrette, then the most decadent lobster in a champagne and caviar cream sauce with a glass of Aubry champagne to accompany, then a choice of dessert with the Frangelico soufflé not to be missed!
Plus to be greeted by the Chef as well as a farewell at the end of the evening is truly special! I'm looking forward to seeing their coming remodel and hope they aren't closed down too long as this is a gem and I highly recommend...as well as Phil Vettel and Chef Michael's #10 ranking (out of Top 50) with George Trois.
Restaurant Michael is wonderful. Clearly, it is the finest restaurant locally. Always a pleasure and food is spectacular.
This day was Restaurant Michael at its very best: good menu choices; outstanding, attentive service; very accommodating to special wishes; superb ambiance; special thanks to Sergio, Daniel and Alfredo. An amazing way to enjoy a special Easter dinner.
Delicious food!!’
Always a wonderful place to dine. Quiet, beautiful and incredible food.
Excellent food, outstanding service. Beautiful room.
I've always had a very good meal here and the service is excellent. Be sure to have Benjamin show you his napkin folding skills. Quite fun and impressive.
We've been going to Michael's on special occasions for years. While the food is usually creative, thoughtful & tasty, there have been a couple stumbles over the years (sand on morels, bland Mother's Day brunch) but not enough to dissuade us from returning.
However on this occasion, my husband's birthday, it was one of the best meals we've ever had in a restaurant! Absolutely excellent!
Also, the staff is exemplary. This is the nicest staff and that just added to the perfection of this experience.
Birthday . Everything was outstanding
Michel's never disappoints. Once again we were astonished by the variety and quality
of the food we were served. Like my son said "this is the best carrot I have ever tasted,"
and that was just a simple vegetable. The service was perfect without hovering. My
water glass was never allowed to reach the halfway mark without being refilled.
From the amuse bouche to the souffle it was an unforgettable meal. Wish I could go
every week.
Excellent dining
I've visited this restaurant many times over the years and it never disappoints. Personalized service as soon as you enter, fantastic, fresh food presented beautifully. Lots of selection for fine wines, even by the glass. I dream of their mashed potatoes...so rich, creamy & delicious. And the chocolate pyramid shaped dessert I had this time was exquisite. The booths are cozy and very nice for a romantic dinner. Several birthdays were being celebrated when we were there - it is a great place to celebrate.
It’s one of the last authentic French restaurants west of NYC. Delicious with solicitous service and great wine list
From the Amuse bouche through to the chocolate souffle everything was impeccable. The duck a l'orange was perfectly done as were the brussel sprout leaves in browned butter on top of a delicious pilaf. The champagne vinegar in the viniagrette was light and delicious and the starter, a cassoulet of crab and scallops was to die for. The dessert plate, decorated in chocolate, wishing us Happy Anniversary was a lovely touch. The wine selections that we left up to the staff were wonderful, as well.
After moving west from Winnetka, we don't often come east. Michael's reminds us that there is indeed a reason to come back and we should do so more often. Thanks all for a memorable evening and a wonderful meal!
Duck l’orange - tonight Michael defined in food why this preparation is a classic of French cuisine for decades It was a perfect combination of subtle orange sweetness, crispy duck skin, and flavorful duck meat and fat. It was just one course in a spectacular evening. Beat restaurant on the North Shore. .
Another spectacular dinner at the best restaurant on the North Shore.
Celebrated Birthday! Excellent in every respect!!
Fantastic food and presentation. Michael is a most affable host, and an amazing chef. His entire staff incredibly well trained. It is well worth the cost, but should be for special occasions.
Exceptional service, very good food, low noise level, great place for a classy date. The cost is not high for the value.
Very nice atmosphere for that special occasion. The service was second to none. Meals not large but your palette is very pleased!
Both the food and the service were outstanding. The portion sizes are on the small side which makes for a good choice in either the 3 or 4 course prix fix menu. The ingredients were fresh and the fish was cooked to perfection.
The restaurant is quiet, which lends to a conversation friendly environment. The courses are well spaced to avoid being rushed or feeling full before the meal is over.
I would definitely recommend for a special occasion dining experience.
We have been and recommended Restaurant Micheal many times. The food and service are always outstanding and we always look forward to a fine meal and great evening.
Absolutely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Rrstaurant .Thank you,Michael.
Incredible food and the service was attentive. This traditional French restaurant is a welcome relief from the abundance of trendy small plate places.
My wife and I had been to Michael’s several times previously but not in recent months. It was my birthday and my wife apprised the restaurant but there was no acknowledgement whatsoever. More glaring was the mistake with my wife’s order. After we enjoyed the salmon tartare and a salad, our entrees arrived—rabbit for me, but the totally wrong entree for my wife (she had ordered the vegetarian special but was brought salmon). No apologies. By the time they brought the correct entree 20 minutes later, I was almost finished with mine. We then enjoyed a delicious dessert-chocolate soufflé with butterscotch gelato.
We loved the food as usual, but were quite upset at the way the staff handled or failed to handle the mistake. In addition, we were puzzled by the lack of an apology and the failure to recognize my birthday.
Wonderful restaurant, great food, professional but friendly service. Always a treat!
Chef Lachowicz and team never fail to deliver a memorable experience.
Excellent food & service. Great value for the quality of food. You likely haven’t had these dishes before. Chef “chats you up” now & again; if a foodie he’s an interesting guy with a personality. Would love to see more “30 & 40 somethings” in the place.
Everything top to bottom at this restaurant is excellent. The food is 5 star without being pretentious. Certainly curious about their higher end restaurant George Trois within the same building.
Restaurant Michael is my favorite restaurant. It's always perfect and is only of the only places in the suburbs to get venison or rabbit.
Another great meal at Restaurant Michael. The service and food are always top notch. The chef
just happened to at the host and he seated us himself. Were else does that happen? We had venison and Osso Buco as entrees and they could not have been prepared better. Thanks for another great dining experience.
This is a truly outstanding restaurant. I would highly recommend to anyone for a nice evening out or a special occasion. The food and service are outstanding and you will have a wonderful evening.
