The historic British tradition of afternoon tea began in the 19th century with Queen Victoria, one of its early pioneers. She was such a big fan of the tea parties she even had her very own cake made. To celebrate this great tradition we’ve hand chosen some historic period treats and sandwiches.

How you greet your guests is the start of their experience with you. An evening I had been looking forward to was ruined by a rude staff member who was to seat us at our table. We were told “we’re not open yet”. We were 4 minutes early. We could have been seated with a menu and we would have been happy to wait. I would have completely left at this point but my husband persuaded me to overlook it. The rest of the evening, once we were permitted to sit at a table, was on the whole OK. The food was good. We didn’t have a starter but starter cutlery was not cleared away. A bottle of wine we wanted from the wine list (a very ordinary every day wine) was apparently not in stock. We asked for coffee with cream and were told this was “too difficult”. A neighbouring table wanted cheese platter but that was not available either. There’s not much on the menu in the first place so this is all a bit disappointing. It’s a shame. Most of the staff were trying very hard but one clearly found the job of serving people an inconvenience.

We had the cream tea and it was delicious. The scones (1 fruit, 1 plain each) were served warm with plenty of clotted cream and jam. A lovely pot of tea was included all for £8.50. The interior of the hotel is amazing and the views over Torbay from the dining room are beautiful. Altogether a very enjoyable experience, we will certainly be going back.

The hotel is not what it was in its glamorous heyday but the stunning views of Torbay have not changed and that is reason enough to pay a visit. Another good reason to pay a visit is for the impressive afternoon tea, most of the treats being made in-house. My companion remarked that it was comparable with her last afternoon tea - that was at Fortnum & Mason! Also, it looked more impressive than the very expensive afternoon tea at that castle hotel on Dartmoor! Great value, lovely relaxed ambience, hotel looked a bit tired and in need of some tlc to restore it to its former glory, or a revamp. I loved the history and feel of the place despite the slightly faded grandeur. I was however surprised to find the hotel guest toilets not as nice as those I have encountered at Wetherspoons! That said, the views of Torbay from the hotel are incomparable and I can thoroughly recommend the excellent afternoon tea offering which we both considered to be great value.

When we arrived for afternoon tea we were asked what drink we wanted we both chose a coffee. This took nearly 30 mins to arrive. Then my gluten free tea arrived we only had 3 small finger sandwiches each. Mine were egg mayo, tomato and chunks of raw onion and victim’s pickle. I complained that last 2 sandwiches were inedible. Then had to wait a further 10 mins for a replacement. My gluten free scone was rock hard and I could barely get my knife through. My husbands scone was dry and fell apart. There was very little cake and was definitely not worth £50 that my son paid for my birthday. I’m extremely disappointed and ended up leaving half of it.

The food itself was lovely and ample. However, we weren’t offered more tea after the initial cup. We asked for the seafood item to be removed due to allergy and replaced with an alternative. The item was removed but there was no replacement. The Palm Court conservatory was unclean (cobwebs and dead flies everywhere) and desperately needs decorating. Obviously the view across the bay is second to none, which is why we chose it. There were two half dead palms which obviously give it its name. We enjoyed it but probably wouldn’t book again.

Had a wonderful stay at The Imperial, including an evening meal and breakfast in the restaurant. Excellent service and lovely food, with stunning sea views. A memorable experience I won’t forget. Hope to return one day.

Surroundings good but it was very hot in the Palm sun lounge & there was no shades/blinds. Obviously this was because of the breathtaking view, but a little uncomfortable. My companion & I couldn’t manage all of the cakes & hoped to take them home but unfortunately there was no option of a “doggy bag”.

There weren’t enough staff so it was difficult to find people to top up our tea/ask questions. Service was slow also because of this. It was very expensive - £25 each for a couple of sandwiches, cakes and a cup of tea. Because there were no staff we had to wait in queues at the bar for ages to try to ask questions. At one point I wandered to reception to find some staff. When I asked if we could have a box to take away the left over cakes I was told no.
