The food and atmosphere were great. There was a bit of a mixup with our bill as our waitress told us that there were 2 different prices, the cheaper one if we were staying at the hotel. That ended up not being true, she just forgot to add our dessert and coffee to the original bill. We had to discuss it with the manager and it was all straightened out!
Attractive interior, nice location & great service. The menu, gluten free , dessert & drink options were terrific. They created a fun “mock tail” for my daughter. The server was wonderful. We loved this place!
Cool, modern atmosphere on the UVA Medical Campus. Service was excellent as was beverages and food. We shared an appetizer of Pimento Cheese with Tomato Jam with Sourdough bread that was excellent. I had the Crunchy Gentleman with a side salad. Everything was fresh and well presented. Only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because the area is confusing and difficult for parking. A pointer on your website to where the public parking garage is would be useful, especially since so many people in this area are visitors as was myself. So, I suggest you locate the public parking garage before going and then enjoy!
The food and service were good. We sat outside and wouldn't recommend it, the street noise and flies and the local drunk made it not so great.
A good experience
The space is very cool and modern. The food was practically inedible. The Pork Hash was a bowl of left overs thrown together with very fatty pork, burnt brussell sprouts and extremely over cooked and oily peppers and onions. We will probably only return for drinks at the bar.
Very nice meal at a place that is nice but not overly formal. Enjoyed a perfect burger . Don't miss the brussel spouts - they are amazing. Also recommend the delicious butterscotch budino for dessert - delicious!
In town for a meeting and stopped in for lunch. Sat outside and it was great. Service was friendly and food was outstanding. Will definitely return on my next trip to Charlottesville.
One of my favorite spots in C’ville. The Brussel sprouts are always fantastic!
It was our first time there and we will definitely go back.
We agree from other reviews that the Brussel sprouts are excellent
Mussels were cold and food average at best I wouldn’t go here again
Mother's Day brunch and the restaurant got slammed right when we walked in - service was very friendly. Food combinations were creative and fun- the only complaint was the food did not come out as hot as I like but did not take away from the taste. I am sure that it was because of everyone arriving at once.
The setting was nice, and the mimosas were good. The service was rather slow. My boyfriend got the biscuits and gravy, which were tasty. I was disappointed in my french toast. It was supposed to have a banana topping. It was merely a liquidy banana sauce with three small mushy pieces of banana. The brioche was good and well cooked, but if its banana french toast, it should probably have some bananas on it.
Situated between Midtown and the Corner and unassuming as a hotel restaurant, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Renewal. My party tried the Crawfish Mac&Cheese and the Cajun sushi as appetizers and the Mac&Cheese was especially delicious. For entrees we got the BBQ Shrimp and Grits, a fried shrimp Poboy and the Renewal Burger. Everything was tasty but beware, the Shrimp and Grits were very spicy - so much so that I did not finish it despite typically loving both Cajun and spicy food.
Main dinner dishes were too salty. Appetizers were very good, especially brussel sprouts and grits. Probably better to enjoy the appetizers. Also, when we went for breakfast the next day, the breakfast was enjoyable, though it was not well received that the hostess would not let us sit in a booth when we requested, even though no one used any of the booths during the entire time we were there. She indicated they were for guests with reservations.
The service was terrible. We had to wait 45 minutes for our food and our waiter never bothered to check in on us or apologize. We complained but it did little good. The food was poor to ok. The salmon entree was pretty bad, the chicken wings ok, the lamb had too much salt (we told our waiter), and the burger was decent. The restaurant gave no discount on the bill to make up for either the long wait or the excess salt on the lamb. The overall value - prices relative to quality was poor.
Great place to relax with friends, try some beers, warch a sports game
We were looking for a place with a bar and TVs to watch the UVA Final Four game. The service was understandably a bit slow because there were so many people there to watch the game. But all the staff were nice and helpful. A spacious setting for watching the game. Manager Jamie was helpful in guaranteeing that we’d have a view of the tv from our table. Good food, very nice wine selection. I’d go again even if there isn’t a UVA game on TV
In terms of food, service, and noise, Renewal was one step above a Chili’s.
Perfect place to watch ACC Basketball!!! They even turned up the volume in the TV, so we could enjoy hearing and seeing UVA play basketball!!! If only UVA would have won;(
Great for Brunch!
The food was great and not terribly expensive and the service was amazing. They were backed up for valentines day and even so we didn't wait long for food.
Limited menu but some good picks. Brussel sprouts were suburb - and without bacon! Slather everything with salt and bacon and oh...yummy, but not here - just plain good and wholesome. Wait staff and kitchen overwhelmed for the day with Duke vs UVA game in town but management stepped it up, filled in and made the evening great. We had the pleasure of service from the wine manager and she was fantastic. Jessie is one of their best wait staff - cheerful always. Draw your own beer with lots of choices...and clean glasses! We'll be back.
We were staying at the Draftsman and stopped in for cocktails that were delicious. The next morning we had breakfast. The kitchen was slow, but the coffee was good and our party had some standout dishes - the big easy and a chicken sandwich were the highlights. It was clear that high quality ingredients were used in all dishes. Cool atmosphere and great music playing in the background.
First time having Pork Belly and grits. Was good, but not great. Tenderloin was very good and the Butterscotch whatever was wonderful. The vine pairings was good but expensive. Overall a good but pricey experience.
It was fine overall, but not particularly impressive. Service was spotty and my steak came out overcooked, but was corrected quickly and easily by the waitstaff.
Jessie offered great service and a delicious wine recommendations. There were 2 mixups with our order that were remedied generously. Very nice experience. Brussels are amazing!
Went for restaurant week. A good way to try a new (to us) place. Food was very good, well prepared and excellent flavors. The ambiance is ok. Certainly not warm and cozy. Has the feel of an upscale coffee shop. Service was good. Parking can be a hassle. They offered $5 valet parking instead of the normal $10 for restaurant week. Not certain if they do such a thing for regular diners. We will very likely return at some point to try the regular menu.
There aren’t many places where brussels sprouts – that’s right, brussels sprouts – can be the star of the restaurant show. But that’s really true at the relatively new Renewal Restaurant on Main Street in Charlottesville. And that’s not because the rest of the meal was bad. It was quite good, actually.
But the brussels sprouts – yes, the brussels sprouts – were quite simply spectacular. I like veggies as well as the next guy, but I’d never consider eating them as dessert. I would have ordered Renewal’s again for dessert if they had let me, during a recent Restaurant Week visit.
The sprouts where charred just right, crunchy and carmelized, but with no burnt taste. Then they were coated with a sherry gastrique, which is basically a sweet-and-sour concoction made with reduced sherry. That was good enough, but as you got toward the bottom of the rather large appetizer, you started dipping into a garlic fondue, which was just one more pleasant surprise. The server said the sprouts are Renewal’s most popular dish. Get yourself some.
The main course, while good, didn’t always quite measure up. My creole potato gratin was basically a nice potatoes au gratin with added andouille sausage. But it could have used more and spicier sausage. Sue loved it anyway. Our friends got the coffee rubbed tenderloin and pronounced it perfect.
Renewal has a huge lineup of craft beers on tap, which we didn’t try, and a nice wine list including some locals such as Gabrielle Rouse, some relatively reasonably priced, which we did sample and enjoy.
Very clean, modern, comfortable interior. We were a little surprised to see large-screen TVs tuned to sports in an upscale dining room, but the assumption was that they were really meant for the bar on the other side. Overall, a “go back and try again” kind of place.
The service was beyond bad. After no one helped us for over 10 minutes after seating, we asked the host if we had a server and he ended up being our server. He didn't seem to have any prior experience as a waiter, although he was a very nice person. The food took a VERY LONG time to come out between courses. The main redeeming quality is that on both this visit and my one prior visit, the food was very, very good. The parking situation isn't great.
Really poor presentation of the food and not very good food at all.
I had a phenomenal experience at Renewal for a late Christmas and family birthday celebration. The menu did not disappoint and why would it with such a talented and decorated executive chef and wonderful management team at the helm. Our servers recommendations and descriptions were spot on! Could not say enough about the service and the cuisine. One of my new Cville favorites!!!!
We came for brunch and I was shocked at how poor the service and food was. All of the bread in all three dishes we ordered were burned with what tasted like propane or some gas heat and the Croque said it came with ham, but the meat that came out was grey and green in some places and tasted like bad turkey. Service was spotty and the place was empty. Too bad. Pimento Cheese was good, but all you could taste was the burnt flavor of the bread.
Love this place. Food is quite good, the wine list nice and Paty, our favorite server, is outstanding.
Reserved on-line for Christmas dinner. Reviewed the website and found no mention of Christmas buffet. We did not anticipate a buffet since we did not find any mention of it. Elected to order from the bar menu. Burgers were okay. The two burgers ordered pink were far from pink but well done. The restaurant is one we will not return to except for drinks. We are not even enticed to try it again for the Southern Cuisine which I am very fond of since I lived in MS and LA. The one notable item to mention was the service. Our server was an outstanding young man. He was very personable and a problem solver. Well done on the hiring of that individual.
We picked Renewal from a short list of restaurants open Christmas Eve and were pleasantly surprised. For the holiday they had a very nice southern style buffet, with lots of veggies cooked with a traditional southern twist. For meat they offered deliciously thin slices of prime rib and honey glazed ham, with the ham particularly good. Renewal has a massive selection of beer on tap. Service and noise were fine, although the restaurant was mostly empty so our experience may not be typical. We plan to return. The only downside was that the buffet was $50 per person and we did not notice that price on OpenTable.
We ordered appetizers and drinks. The food and drinks were good but a little pricey. The service was terrible.
Food was way over fried to the point that some of it was inedible. However, the service was outstanding and the ambiance was fun.
Reserved a table last night, to Celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. My wife ordered the Blackened Salmon. The Rice on the Dish was under-cooked, and many of the Grains crunchy. We sent the Dish back. After 10 minutes, the Server returned with a Second Dish. It appeared the Rice had been “reboiled”, and was still crunchy. My Wife then mentioned her Gumbo, also had some crunchy Rice. The Server took the Salmon Dish off the Bill, But our special Dinner was a great disappointment!
First timers, we went for Thanksgiving lunch not knowing what to expect and enjoyed a wonderful buffet. Buffets are tough to pull off but everything was very tasty. My companions were especially enamored of the stuffing, while I could have eaten my weight in those brussels sprouts! Desserts were lovely but could have benefited from some toppings. Bar a little slow with drinks (hey, it was early) but Jesse made everything right and was a delightful accompaniment to a satisfying meal. We spotted the 36 beer taps on our way out the door, we'll be back!
