Rendez Vous Cafe Bistro Ratings and Reviews
I go especially for the steamed mussels, but it's a broad menu and all I've tasted has been very good. Good wine list, I'm told, but I'm not an expert in that. Convenient to movie theater next door. Easy to have good conversations with the food. Relaxed atmosphere. Very nice service, always pleasant and helpful servers. We love it!
Tuesday evening live music--gypsy jazz guitar--is fist rate. Many good and basic French dishes on theme, but sadly for us, the special we ordered, coq au vin, was tasteless and easily the worst coq au vin I've ever eaten. I am still giving them a good on food because I have had many good meals there. This time food was off.
I found the food pretty indifferent and the service was poor. We had to wait a very long time for water and coffee refills (with many reminders) and for the check. The sandwich my friend had was good and this may be a good place for a quick business lunch as it is quiet and the tables are large.
LOVE this place. Lauren is the kindest host and his food is superb, all of it. I especially love modules et frites, rack of lamb, daube, onion soup, salad with goat cheese. Good wines, too. Sometimes live music that’s wonderful. Go often; it will be your favorite.
We went on a Tuesday evening when they have live music. They refer to it as French-gypsy-jazz (think Midnight in Paris or Chocolat) which really lends to the french bistro atmosphere, creating a great dining experience. The food was excellent, beautifully balanced French food flavors and very reasonably priced wines.
I ❤️ this place. This is my second time coming. I live across the bridge and more than 30 minutes away but I make it a point to eat here whenever I am in the area. The food is amazing. Not one bad thing that I tasted. It isn't cheap but the price is worth the quality.
This place is a local delight. The food is excellent and the service pretty good. I believe that because the dishes are so well prepared that it takes a bit longer to get served than than I usually expect. Still, totally worth the wait. There is usually a crowd for dinner so I suggest reservations, especially if you want a booth.
Among the excellent choices are a perfect quiche, perfect lamb stew, excellent salads, croque mousieur, and--surprise--the best BLT I have ever had. Profiterols too!
I only wish they would add cocktails.
We ate here before a movie at the Albany Twin next door. The table was fine and atmosphere wonderful, but our waiter was overworked and stressed, and as a result not very responsive. The mussels tasted wrong; when we mentioned it later he said they were out of season. Why then were they still on the menu--and why weren't we warned in advance?
We went with another couple for dinner and movie as the movie theater is next door. The service was good and friendly. We ordered two Coq au Vin, one salmon, and one bowl of mussels. The one who had the mussels enjoyed his meal. I enjoyed the salmon., but it was a tad undercooked (better than overcooked!). But the chicken in wine was basically a chicken stew. Neither of the two who had it enjoyed their meals. They agreed that the best part was the mashed potatoes on the side. Because we were going to the movie, we did not get any desserts nor starters. Really too bad as the restaurant was enjoyable and allowed for conversation among friends.
In all aspects we found the bistro outstanding. The atmosphere was colorful and entertaining, with bright colors, French place names and sayings ("without bread and wine, love is nothing", in French of course). The menu was good and varied. We had a great green salad, a Provincial tart, rack of lamb, ratatouille, and a heavenly chocolate mousse for dessert. A couple of kir Royales were very good. The prices were very reasonable, e g $9 for the kir Royales instead of $12-$14 in other places. The whole meal for two cost less than $100. And even though it was Bastille Day, the service was very prompt and attentive. We recommend it wholeheartedly.
Hadn't been here in a while so thought it would be a good evening out - Food was just okay this time - one of our party had the cassoulet and thought it was just okay nothing special but what really bothered him was that there was too many inedibles in it (i.e. bay leaf etc.) and I agree - there should be nothing in the dish that you cannot eat - Probably be awhile before we try it again -
Food: a few things were borderline over-seasoned; onion soup was more herby than any other onion soup I've tasted, but not in a bad way; mussels had a strange flavor, and broth was a bit too lemony; daube was extremely tender; risotto was more like a rice pudding, not a risotto, and a bit too sweet; creme brulee was tasty.
Service: the restaurant was very busy (possibly more than usual for Tuesday night music?), and there were only two servers. Another 1-2 waiters would make a huge difference.
The $26 Prix Fixe is a true value: The opening salad with shrimp was delicious, and the Navarin of Lamb stew was good as well. The salad was huge and easily shared between two people, so I would not advise purchasing two prix-fixe dinners. My partner ordered his steak cooked medium, which was the wrong decision for such a thin steak - but this was his error more than the kitchen's. Great dinner choice when going to the Albany Theater next door!
Food prices are reasonable, however mussels are very small. Tables can be crowded and next to each other which makes conversation difficult. We had requested a quiet table and were sat very close to another table for two. When I asked for a booth, request was denied and another couple without a reservation got a table half booth , half table which was not offered to us as an option. We would have preferred that seating.
Love this place! Pretty authentic French food that is really delish and reasonably priced. Warm, welcoming service. I can especially recommend the sole meunière and the ratatouille. My friends loved the shrimp risotto. Menu is a nice change of pace and fresh ingredients, always. It's becoming one of my very favorites!
If you are looking for a breakfast place that has unique and delicious menu items, then Rendez-Vous is the place to go! My sister had their challah French toast with fresh strawberries that she absolutely adored. I ordered from the lunch menu and got a bri cheese sandwich which, although simple, made my mouth water. Definitely would come here again!
We enjoy Rendez Vous often. On Tuesday, live music in a casual atmosphere is fun. The staff is competent and friendly, the owner hands-on and welcoming. The food is informal French--like an upscale Brasserie: fresh, tasty, appealing. The wines good and relatively inexpensive. Overall a very good value, too. We're happy it's in our neighborhood!
We always eat dinner at Bistro Rendezvous prior to attending a film at the Albany Theater next door. They are always spot on about our time constraints and feed us in a timely way. The food is predictably good as is the service. The noise level is loud if they are busy but tolerable--unlike most good Bay Area restaurants which are too noisy to hear yourself scream! When will they realize the value of older people's business???
We live in the neighborhood and ate there for the first time on Sunday night. A good find. We'll definitely be back.
I liked the three-course meal option for $26. It effectively gives you 25% off your meal. Reasonable number of choices for each course. I had the Seafood Vol-au-Vent and Navarin Lamb Stew, followed by the chocolate mousse. Enjoyed all three. My companion didn't do the three course meal, but she also enjoyed her Salade Verte and Seared Rack of Lamb.
Service was excellent, and the noise level was very low.
This is very much like bistros I've been to in France. Traditionally prepared food. The dishes you'd expect. As someone who usually eats organically grown food as much as possible I would say the ingredients were commercial so that was a negative for me. However the very reasonable prices and overall ambience were appealing.
We ate at Rendez Vous Cafe on Valentine's Day and really loved it. They were clammed that day, with a small staff, so the slow service is to be forgiven. The overall value ratio of price to delicious provincial style French cuisine can't be beat. They even have combos that come with wine!
We went on Valentine's Day and it was crowded but still comfortable. The maitre d worked very hard to get everyone seated and to keep the orders flowing. The food was solidly good. We ordered the salmon and the sole meuniere which was tasty and plentiful, a good value. The atmosphere was friendly and bustling. A fine neighborhood French restaurant. I've been there before and will go again.
Our Valentines dinner couldn't have been better. We began the meal with two delicious Kir Royal which with baguette and butter made waiting for the main course pleasant. As busy as the house was, and it was, we weren't kept waiting too long for the food.
When the meal arrived, the food was spot on, from the warm chevre salad, to the Salmon Normandie, through the creme brulee dessert. My husband's choice of the mussels with frites was was flavorful, and hearty. The mussels were very large, and the frites crisp. The creme brulee was crispy and smoothe, and with cafe American made a great end to the meal. We love this place!
All the food was fabulous, but the lamb stew was the best I have ever had. Service was great at 5:30 on Valentine's Day and still very good even when restaurant became overflowing with customers. If you are interested in clean french food, very delicious, you should try this restaurant.
