As far as ambiance goes this place is great - unapologetically old school and it is like traveling through time. Sadly, there were some staff issues and to me the food was mediocre.
As to staff - the bar folks are great, charmingly quick, know their horse racing and good for a laugh and a strong drink. The host was not as charming - he was somewhat abrupt, almost abrasive and trying to be a "tough guy". Our waitress, while friendly felt like she was rushing us.
The food was o.k. but nothing exceptional - steaks uninspired, twice baked potato dry and the au gratin oily. House salad is unique - not bad but nothing great.
I really liked the place going in, sorry to say it fell flat past the bar.
Love this place!!! Nice portions and great food.
Phenomenal staff. Maitre d' was very accommodating, as we wanted a quieter table. We had an entire room to ourselves. Server exceeded expectations. Great food. Will be back.
Once a year we vacationed in the San Diego area. And towards the end of our week we eat at red Tracton’s restaurant. We have never been disappointed. Their prime rib is amazing!
We went to Red Tracton's to celebrate my mother-in-law's 85th birthday because she LOVES their lobster bisque, and she wasn't disappointed. Great dinner, atmosphere and service!
My prime rib didn’t come rare enough and they brought me a better one in five minutes
They charged us $40 for 4 shrimp. That’s ridiculous!
I'd heard of Red Traction's for a while and when I had the chance to pick a restaurant to meet a co-worker who was down for a horse show, I said let's meet here. The service was impeccable, the food outstanding, and the atmosphere perfect--not too loud or too quiet. Love the green leather booths. Red Traction's reminds me of the old Derby (now gone) on Huntington Drive by the Santa Anita track and of Dal Rae's on Washington Blvd. up in Pico Rivera.
Sandbox chums and I usually meet at Dae Rae's as they are still in L.A. However, when they come south next, I'll reserve us a big table at Red's. Great place!
Go on a Sunday and get an amazing full fried chicken dinner.
Excellent food and service. Prime rib was the best I ever had. Also the pear arugula salad was amazing.
An old standby, gathering spot, food is consistent.
Wonderful food and service. We had a fantastic evening.
Thought the quality has gone down. Very expensive and yet no birthday dessert was given. Would still go for dinner but probably not lunch. We ordered the lobster club. 2 sandwiches and 2 glasses inexpensive wine came to $109.
Was very disappointing considering the money spent....the salad was average and our meals were cold and had to be sent back . The staff had an attitude ...big deal and there was no compensation or apology . Not a place that i would recommend or go back to
Food always excellent! We eat at Red Tracton's a least several times a month. Love the staff.
Best Food in North San Diego and Best Steakhouse in All of San Diego !!!
A fun night - sat in the bar which is always interesting when the piano player is playing. Very active scene, lots of dancing and drinking. Food very good, had a cute bday celebration for my friend. Food is a bit "heavy" with sauces and butter but overall we had a great time. I will definitely be back.
I have been coming here since it opened in the 1980's. I always look forward to the visit. I have never had an off meal. We try to go here at least three times a year.
Specialty - jumbo shrimp....very chewy and not special! Overpriced for the offering.
Great food but overpriced
Red Tracton is a good option for older patrons who enjoy a traditional steakhouse. Average age was about 70 that night although it was still reasonably lively and crowded. The food is good but very expensive. Plan on date night exceeding $200 if you have a few drinks with your food.
Great evening! Love the atmosphere, service and food.
We were celebrating 2 birthdays and the waitress did nothing towards the celebration, never even acknowledged it. I'm not sure why the question was asked if we were celebrating anything, it didn't seem to make a difference.
Great food, great service!!! Without a doubt those things were fantastic. All the food and alcohol drinks were perfect! However, We made the mistake of going on Valentines Day and the menu prices were increased so drastically it was absurd! I will dine there again but NEVER on a special holiday because of what they did. $50 for Chicken when regular menu it’s $29...$75 for lamb chops when normal menu it $47. I don’t mind some markup but that was awful to do to their customers just because it’s Valentines Day!
Prices doubled vs online menu prices. everyone was complaining that the bisque was $20 dollars.
The restaurant was busy as it was Valentine’s Day. My wife and I were seated in the bar area as the “red colored” other side of the restaurant was busy. The problem was that the room we were in next to the parking lot was a bit cold. The server was great and delivered our appetizer and drinks. When the main entree was brought to our table I noted that the plate was rather cool and not warm or hot. The filet mignon steak was barely warm as was the baked potato and the asparagus was also cool temp. My wife had a better experience with the salmon as it was warm and perfectly cooked. I do realize that the restraint was busy with about >200 reservations according to our server. So I am not sure I will come back for any special occasions... maybe when they are not so busy.
We were staying near this place and just took a chance. We were delighted to find an equestrian theme, based on its location across from Del Mar track. The steak we shared (They are huge) was perfectly cooked and complimented by a baked potato about the size of s Yorkie. Fine service and since it was a late week night it was quiet and low key. Definitely would go back when we get a meat craving again.
The place resembles old steak houses and the food is excellent.
This time, unfortunately they sit us on a table by the bar and non of the four of us could hear the other person. Very noisy...
The prime rib is a staple in their menu and worth to order. Crab legs very big and tasty
The restaurant was extremely noisy most of which was coming from the bar area. there was one table in the dining room where a woman was shouting obscenities. Even after I complained to the waitress no restaurant employee even approached her table to ask her calm down. The food was good but while I ordered a rib eye I got a strip steak instead.
Chris is a very nice waitress!! Food is excellent!! And lots of it!!
Had to wait about 15 minutes beyond our reservation time. Went to bat to wait. $30 and 2 Manhattans later our table was ready. Sat in side room where they put kids and large groups. Hate that room!!!! Most times I specify to not sit us there. Oops!!! Dinner was very good as usual. Prime rib, Chilean sea bass, and a NY steak cooked perfectly. Courtney was our server. Very knowledgeable of menu and just a very nice server!!!! We’re locals. We’ll be back!!! We love Red Tractons!!!!
This place is probably a place for a selected few people who like to experience the 50' and eat massive dinners with thousands of calories... Not my cup of tea...
We love Red Tractons. Beautiful setting, wonderful food and drinks with exceptional service. What more could you want?
nothing like an old-fashioned steakhouse, replete with an excellent rendition of classic wedge salad, prime rib, and french fries. My girlfriend's chilean sea bass was delicious. Drinks were generous, waitress was charming, piano music an embellishment. Will gladly return.
Tractons is always good. Their menu is quite varied and interesting: something for everyone. One of these days I'm going to order their Sunday special, Southern Fried Chicken. We always do steak or prime rib and it never disappoints. They always cook it right. Atmosphere is horse-centric because they are across the street from the Del Mar Race Track. During the summer racing season you cannot get a reservation unless you call far ahead. The servers are always cheerful but I'm not sure why because they are always incredibly busy. They deserve to be grouchy once in a while but they never are. We always request seating in the dining room, never the bar, because the dining room is not as noisy as the bar. We have eaten in the bar and couldn't hear our table conversation at all. My only complaint is that they always seem to be "out of" my favorite bourbon, Blantons. I wish they would keep it in stock.
I have been going to Tractons for over 20 years. This was a special dinner with friends celebrating my retirement from the Police Department and our move out of state. Things have changed!!
Starting with the large gentleman at the front; never smiled or welcomed us. We ordered a large selection of appetizers, which were pretty good. We had our favorite, prime rib and lobster tail for the entree. Both were tough and lobster overcooked. Everything was "Market Price", so never had any idea what the bill would be, not a real concern, but way overpriced considering the quality.
I guess everything changes, but based on the growing number of "Quality" restaurants in the area, Tractons is now off my list. I hope management can bring it back to what it once was.
We love Red’s!
I had made a 530 reservation online with a confirmation. My male friend and I arrived on time in a very late model Bentley Flying Spur, if you dont know in the $225 range, I only mention it for the following, dressed appropriately for dinner and the crowd, we were seated in the bar, yes the bar, very loud, I quickly realized it was not worth dinner to sit in the bar, so I politely asked the Host if he might have a different table, he said if you had a reservation, I reminded him I did and he said yes then went on to help another patron. He eventually turned around and said I will help you in a minute, he first seated the other group, he then seated us in a side room with one other couple, we sat alone in a large room for most of our dinner, there was plenty of room in the main dinning. We waited and waited for a server, finally a sweet kind lady showed up and provided terrific service. i thought the food was good to great, not excellent, salad was warm, carrot cake was dry and old. The host clearly discriminated on us by seating us in out of the way tables, not wanting Gay men in the main dinning room. I almost Never leave a bad review even if the place is terrible. As long as the tall host with a serious braided pony tail is manning the front desk I wont be going back. Sad in todays world. You will likely get a much better dinner at Ruth's Chris.
It was super fun! There were a couple of super drunk "bros" yell talking next to us for about :30minutes until they picked up on our discomfort and then hey quited down.
