Red Pump Kitchen Ratings and Reviews
Loved everything about this place the food, the service, the ambience was all great. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the seating arrangement. I don't enjoy when restaurants put tables side by side so close to each other against the wall. Makes for a somewhat uncomfortable experience and sometimes feels like I'm having dinner with people I don't know. Everything else was excellent!
Overall, I really like RedPump but it seems that there always seems to be one thing that annoys. Sometimes it is the service but that seems to be getting better. This time it was my entree...a single braised short rib of beef with barely five bites of meat on a skimpy ring of mashed potatoes filled with spinach....at $28.00. Doubt the food cost was even 20%. I am willing to pay much more if the value is there. Also, the wines list seems to be dominated by their own wines from Pippin Hill
Met my mother and her friends here for a small birthday celebration. The food the wonderful, the service was excellent and they were in no hurry to get us out the door. They checked on us often and were glad we enjoyed our stay! Would recommend this to anyone looking for somewhere with good food, but casual enough to just walk in after shopping the Charlottesville antique markets in downtown!
The waitstaff was very friendly and accommodating. Great ambiance. You have to see their "living wall".
The Kale Caesar salad was the best part of the meal. The buccotini and cappelini pasta dishes were good but not great.
Prices are a bit steep but for a special occasion I'd return.
My wife and I have eaten here a few times and have had great experiences each time. This visit was just as awesome. Kimberly was our server and helped make our evening even more superb. In fact, we gave her a hug as we left at the end of the night. We do not live in Charlottesville but were visiting Richmond on this visit. We decided to make the hour drive just to eat at Red Pump. We both commented how enjoyable the evening was. I finally had the gnocchi which was exceptional. My wife had the salmon and really enjoyed it. We also devoured the Brussel sprouts appetizer, which is quite possibly one of the best Brussel sprouts appetizers we've had in a long time. I could go on and on about Red Pump since we are big fans (even having our wedding at Pippin Hill which part of the group that owns Red Pump). Additionally, we were seated next to two diners that proved to be very challenging for the wait staff. Everyone that interacted with them did so with a high level of professionalism, patience, and grace. Kudos to all of the wait staff for this! We will definitely return and will make sure to request to be seated at a table where Kimberly is working.
We went because it was Restaurant Week, but wished we’d discovered Red Pump long before. The service was excellent and the dishes creative. The portions were a little smaller than some other restaurants, but I always say, “I’d pay more to be served less food,”since finishing an overloaded plate makes me feel stuffed. The only things I thought less than excellent was the noise level. I wish restaurants would just bite the bullet and get carpeting and acoustic walls and ceiling.
Red Pump has become a favorite of our and our friends. The apps are great and well planned. The meatballs were like eating in my grandmothers kitchen. Perfection! The entrees are portioned perfectly. Culturally, we have become accustomed to large portions when dining out but the entrees are just enough so you’re able to enjoy one of the house made desserts. I recommend Red Pump to everyone and will continue to do so!
I had been there before and thought it was pretty good for the ambience, food, and value but I had a much different opinion this time.
It took someone almost 10 minutes to get our drink orders (The restaurant was half full)
The server did not introduce himself when he finally made it to our table.
The meal prices are not in the range they should be for what the food is.
After reading reviews on yelp we expected better food and service. Its really is too bad since we are new to the area from Chicago and live right on the mall only 600 feet away. We were hoping to make it "our restaurant ". My husband ordered the pizza- Meh. It was underwhelming . The sauce was sweet. No need to add sugar to tomato sauce! It's a pet peeve of mine. I ordered the Orecchiette with sausage. It had almost no flavor. I asked the for hot pepper flakes, just to give it some flavor. Actually I had to ask for the hot pepper flakes twice since the waitress would not bring it the first time. When I asked the second time her attitude was that of being very put out I asked, all while my Luke warm pasta was getting cooler. As for the service it was much worst then the food. We watched our server walk pass us without looking once several times. It almost became a joke how badly she ignored us. We watched her attend her three other tables five to six times each to our one time. We could not get her attention as we needed, more drinks from the bar, hot pepper flakes, cup of ice. Also the whole staff needs to work together . There was a hostess moving silverware around the restaurant ignoring and walking past our table at least 15 times without simply picking up our empty dirty plates on our small cramped table. We watched the hostess and waitress as the restaurant emptied out clean EMPTY tables, wipe them and dress with new silverware and plates before waiting on us and clearing our table and asking if we needed anything. Terrible service !!! She never once asked if we needed anything after she dropped our food. What we thought would be "our restaurant " sadly we will never patron again.
It was our first time in Charlottesville and this restaurant was very highly recommended. The decor is nice. Very friendly wait staff. My partner got the beef which was excellent. My scallops were over-cooked and rubbery. I did not have the heart to send them back since we were having such a great time with the waitress and everyone. It is an okay place but I think you could find somewhere better for that kind of money
For the level of expense, we were shocked at what did not go well. We have had fantastic lunches there in the past. My date’s drinks were not on point. Both dishes were overly laden with salt. To their credit, they did comp the dessert. The check was almost $200. This meal did not stand up to the cost. Because of this, we are not likely to return. The service was stellar.
We really enjoyed the appetizers, especially the broccoli sprouts. Even our broccoli sprout hater loved them. The pancetta and Asian pear made the dish.
My pork tenderloin was tender and very flavorful and a nice portion size. Order it medium. Another in the group liked his scallops, but the dish left him hungry.
Our only complaint is the tiny and uncomfortable table size. I think they are trying to turn two tops into four tops. Stop it! You might do well to specifically request the banquet or the high tops.
I have some pretty good meals there before but last week we ordered a 5-course tasting menu. It was excellent. Good variety of food, beautiful presentation, wonderful bites. And we had the wine pairing, too, which they seemed to be putting together on the spot and it worked out quite well. A very nice surprise that the kitchen can make more than just the "standard" (but good) menu.
Really disappointing experience. After our first visit months ago, which was OK, we decided to introduce friends to the restaurant. The first problem encountered was a noise level so high that we couldn't hear one another talk. Then the salads arrived with a delicious dressing but with wilted greens. My shrimp and pasta dish tasted fine but the shrimp were overdone. The other three entrees were either disappointing or worse: Pizza was dry, and a pork and pasta dish so greasy it was almost inedible.
Needless to say we passed on desert , apologized to our friends, and vowed never to return.
