Went to Red Peony for their dim sum menu. While their dumplings were good, the fried items tended to be greasy, and the oil soaked scallion pancake bordered on the inedible. Such missteps could have been forgiven if the service had not deteriorated from inattentive wait staff to the downright surly hostess. With so many options for good dim sum in NYC, I will not be going back to Red Peony anytime soon.
Was hoping to still receive my points for this reservation ($54 bill for lunch). Beers were $7 and $8 (a bit pricy) but lunch specials were a good deal. Tasty and friendly staff. Entrees came out while we were still eating our soup.
Really bad service
I got a table outside, which was OK because there’s a nice breeze. The roast duck dumplings were absolutely delicious. A chicken wing wasn’t extremely generous portion.I thought it was great value for the money. I will definitely come back here again.
The food was fine, we got an assortment of dumplings and noodle dishes the roasted duck dumplings were the best. Service was slow even though there was only one other man in the restaurant. When I asked about happy hour deals they said they didn’t have any unlike how open table advertised.
The happy hour drinks and appetizers were amazing and delicious.
TERRIBLE SERVICE, INCREDIBLY RUDE PEOPLE WHO DONT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS
Delicous food as we had been looking for great quality Chinese Cuisine.
Such a nice place
Nice food. Nice ambiance. Accommodated a large group. Could use some more staff to cope with peak times.
The food was good. We tried the jellyfish which was interesting. The scallion pancakes were awesome! And three of us got three different fired rices which were amazing!
Service was awful! We had to ask for napkins and water after sitting for 15 minutes. Food was obviously previously frozen and terrible. A bad choice.
Service was slow, and food was of poor quality
The food and staff were phenomenal!
Great place for authentic food in Manhattan. Also, location can't be any better
the food wa very good. the restaurant inside is charming with chandelier and red velvet chairs, outside is destroyed with flowery garland, very pretty. the food was very good. pork soup dumplings, bok chocolate with black mushrooms, mei fun noodles with duck,, general tso chicken all delish. the service was unacceptable. disorganized, un trained, even rude at times. I usually discount when diners are not happy with the service, there are so many factors that can contribute to this that is not the restaurants /servers faults. but here, it was lack of training, planning and simply not caring about your patrons.
The place was uncomfortable and cold. Te service was awful. The food was less than mediocre. Would not go back or recommend. It was my bday and I was sad it was so forgettable
Excellent food and service. The duck is some of the best the city has to offer. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Food overall is 8/10 and cost twice as much as other places. Kinda disappointed, had far better Shanghainese food in flushing at half price. M
Small restaurant. Huge menu with lots of variety. Everything our table had was great. Good service that was not overly attentive.
I was looking forward to dining at red peony for the first time. I heard and read a lot of good reviews prior to making a reservation. However, I was very disappointed with my dining experience. The food was good but the service isn’t. I am not sure what happened but there was a long wait between appetizer and main dish. They sat us in the far corner, and I feel like they might’ve forgotten our order. I had to flag a server to ask for an update. I didn’t order anything complicated either. It was very disappointing.
Excellent food, highly recommend the dim sum and Peking duck! Great and friendly service. Good value.
Great food and Michelle was amazing. Will definitely be back!!
This is a wonderful restaurant if you want to enjoy Shanghainese food uptown from Chinatown. Food portions are very generous and the preparation is authentic. The restaurant has a chef from Shanghai who can produce a wide variety of classic Shanghainese dishes. The service is also excellent, as the staff will accommodate almost all reasonable requests. We ordered off the menu in requesting Chinese birthday noodles, and although not on the menu, they provided it. This will be our mainstay Chinese restaurant on the West Side. They also have Cantonese dim sum and Szechuan food, but we did not try.
My first time eating here, I had a wonderful experience, everything tasted so delicious and fresh. Lobster with ginger and scallions was delicious, so was the Mai Fun noodle and snow peas leaf with garlic was great. I couldn’t eat it all. Service was also very attentive and welcoming. I can’t wait to return the next time I’m in NYC!
our family has been comign to this location for years- the new owners have kept the soup dumpling palace we love going strong--and improved the atmosphere.
Incredibly diverse menu with many unique dishes. Food is always great!
Really enjoyed the authentic dim sum Uptown, and good service!
Very surprised to find authentic Chinese food in touristy Midtown...will definitely go back.
The only reason why I rated the ambience and noise level the way I did is because it was outside dining.
Dined outside, nice and quiet for NYE. Service was okay. Only one heater was working. Would go back in warmer weather.
Outdoor tables were places within 3’ of other diners. Only 3 heaters available for 6 tables.
Excellent food. Wonderful service.
I've taken out here before and instantly Knew it was amazing, that I just had to come see it! I came tonight and it was just as amazing, if not better! I ordered drinks, appetizers, and food!!! All amazing! The atmosphere was great, and I felt comfortable. I highly recommend and will be coming back to either dine in, if not definitely ordering take out!!!
Stopped by here after seeing the tree at Rockefeller Center. They had excellent soup dumplings and shumai. We also ordered chicken & broccoli, beef & broccoli and a vegetable fried rice. The servings were large but very flavorful. It was a nice midtown meal.
Food was disappointed, luckily service was good
Staff are wonderful and so sweet. Not my first time and not my last!

We discovered this restaurant through OpenTable. Without OpenTable we would not have known to dine here, and we are glad that we decided to have dinner here. Outdoor dining was very pleasant. Food was excellent with generous portions. Chicken Fried Rice was all white meat, and we were impressed. We will definitely return.

Overall the food was good. The dessert was very hard and the presentation was not good!
