Unless chef Rick Bayless is cooking your dish, your basically out of luck. The food was passable but not great.
It was my best friends birthday and the acknowledge him at the entrance and throughout our visit. It was our first of what will be many experiences here...
It was a great experience
The setting was great. We had reservations for 8:30pm and it was pretty dead inside, we did not mind that at all. Our server was great, I don’t remember his name though. He recommended some fantastic drinks. The food was good, although it tasted like every other Mexican restaurant to me. The order got a little messed up and they had to correct our food, took a little longer but we did not mind.
Overall, excellent service (besides messing up our order, still not a problem), beautiful settting, friendly staff and a well organized tasty menu.
We enjoyed the food but the music was way too loud. Our waiter couldn't get it lowered and we finally called someone over from the desk. He got it lowered but not by much.
Other than the long wait for our food after we ordered everything was good. Manager came by an apologized for the wait and offered to take care of our drinks.
Overall it was okay but wish it was a bit better than it was.

Our waitress was really attentive to us! Very friendly! Food was had a good taste. Loved the Chocolate lave cake!! It was AMAZING!
We arrived at RED O on time for a 6:30pm reservation. No one greeted us for 10 minutes and when we were, waited for another 5 minutes to be seated. Server was ok but got rude when asked to hold some toppings to the side- her words “ I heard you!” . Food was not good at all and server came by to clean up and was so quick and I careful with her placement to the table as she dropped a whole dish of chips and barely apologized.
I will not return to this place.
I don’t think Rick Baylis owns Red O anymore. When he owned it the food and drinks were creative and delicious. Now it’s just a below standard regular me u an restaurant. And what Mexican restaurant does not have Gran Mariner for Cadillac margaritas on a holiday Saturday night? Perhaps they could send someone to the store?
Our oyster was delicious.
The main dish, enchiladas was too salty.
Salmon was fine.
During our reservation the waiter went missing. Our food was forgotten about and many issues with order. Appetizers did not come out and dessert was a flop.
Dinner was okay. I ordered the braised beef enchiladas and the sauce was way too sweet. Meat was good but overall fish was lacking flavor.
I think the experience would have been better if service was present.
The savory food was tasty and margaritas excellent. Waiter didn’t tell us the special we ordered was an appetizer so we ended up having to order more food.
Guacamole was amazing and jalapeño poppers delish. Churros, however, were really disappointing. Hard in and out and not sweet at all.
The food was amazing. I've tried duck a few times, and the duck taquitos were to die for. I would come back purely for those taquitos. They just melted in your mouth. The filet mignon was divine as well. Will definitely be coming back for more soon.
I chose this restaurant for our one dinner in Santa Monica based on Rick Bayless's reputation. While his name is promoted on Open Table, I saw no evidence of his presence -- not in the menu, food, or execution. It was perfectly adequate, non-inventive Mexican fare, at high prices. Nothing special. If Bayless is involved, he is resting on his laurels. Would not return.

Arrived at restaurant and did not get greeted for 5 minutes. Service was very slow despite restaurant being nearly empty. Food was decent but overpriced.

New Years Eve - restaurant was packed, full menu was served and everything was exceptional. The energy and enthusiasm of everyone working at the restaurant made it a really special night for my daughter and me!

Made a reservation for New Year's Eve and arrived a little early. They were kind enough to seat us right away.
Ordered the guacamole, which needed more flavor, salt and acid. The chips also needed salt. The duck taquitos were okay. Sauce was pretty hot. Had a trio of enchiladas which were tasty, but wasn't anything exceptional. Rice was okay, again nothing exceptional. We each ordered a virgin strawberry margarita, which was tasty. I had mine blended, yet it still had chunks of ice in it.
The food overall is okay. Nothing exceptional and pretty pricey for what you get.

The food was delicious. The waiter was a little sassy/not funny/ and he was slow to check on our drinks and probed him to make recommendations. Maybe he wasn't having a good day.
Poor experience. The cocktail drink did not match the description. When I pointed this out the waiter just said sorry but did not make another drink or refund it. In general the service was apathetic.
Food lacked seasoning -- desperately needed salt. Ceviche lacked acid. There was a long piece of hair baked into one of the churros. Will not be returning.
Very disappointed, mostly because I love the Red O in Newport Beach. The service was beyond terrible - not just slow. It was slow and we could never find our waitress to learn what was going on. I ordered the Carnitas, which is my favorite dish at Red O in Newport Beach and it was not close on quality or flavor. I’m not sure why this location is so bad when the other is so good, but definitely a let down.
After celebrating a bachelorette party for my girl friend thus past Sunday, we were recommended to have brunch at Red O in Santa Monica. What a great suggestion it was! I’ve previously dined at Red O for a nice Birthday dinner and had tacos and margaritas on a day at the beach. But this brunch menu was just as good! Mexican inspired dishes. Omg. Unlimited margaritas, mimosas, and sangria for $20! Me and my girls had a blast that day. It was filled with lots of great food selections, champagne, laughter and love. Our waitress surprised the bride to be with a yummy dessert - the butter cake was amazing! With a tropical sauce, warm butter cake and a scoop of coconut ice cream. Wow! Great brunch experience and will come back again! Thanks Red O. :)
Took my boyfriend out for his bday and they made it special. Food was absolutely great... he was so happy about his dinner. At the end they brought him out a birthday dessert which topped the whole date.

View was nice, table arrangement was poorly set - we were sat at a very small wobbly table at first even though many tables were available - asked hostess for table change and she was kind and found us a new table. Server was inattentive, he never introduced himself, ran out of drink. As for the food - the ideas were nice but my food came cold, food was not prepared medium it was very rare. I would not go back for food but I did enjoy the beverage menu.
Service and location were great! Food was sub par. We have experience with the Red O in San Diego. Food was better in San Diego. Based on our experience with both locations, we would say the brand, relative to food, is overpriced. It would be easy to find better value someplace else.
Beach chic ambience. From apps to the main course you won't be disappointed. The menu offers selections for Pescatatians to hearty meat eaters. The lobster and shrimp enchiladas are my personal favorite. There's a unique bone in steak dish large enough to feed two men. Locals should return again and again. While we out of towners long to return on our next visit.
Food was great, they were able to seat us, even though we were really, really, really late. Service was excellent, our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and very helpful. We will definitely be back! :)
Worst server ever. Never asked if the food was ok , the drink was missing some ingredients that says on menu , i asked if i can have it, he was legit mad that I had problem with the drink. He would talk to only to my brother, no other female members of family. Either he is sexist, or he just doesnt like all of our kind. The manager of the place was nice, he came and asked “hows everything so far” i said “the server never came to check on us, he straight up doesnt like us Does he” he had no problem standing around his other table and chat for long. Food was expensive including cocktails, i wouldnt pay that much for that quality.
