About Red Hat on the River
"The food, the atmosphere, the decor could not have been more engaging. This restaurant is a honey" -M.H. Reed, NY Times - "Red Hat has the energy of a big-city brasserie, the sparkle of an enduring seaside spot and the feel of a party that no guest wants to leave" -Steve Reddicliffe, NY Times
The two level, French bistro-inspired eatery is housed in a hundred -year -old factory building that has been transformed to feature an uninterrupted, 180 degree view of the river from the main and loft dining levels. Guests will enjoy the seasonal, Hudson Valley ingredients, as well as French bistro classics. As MH Reed observed in her NY Times review “Red Hat is so close to the river in Irvington that when the wind is up and the waves slap the shore, their icy spray covers the riverside path to the restaurant.”

Red Hat on the River Ratings and Reviews
We had a lovely and festive anniversary dinner. Two couples: same wedding anniversary date!
I was disappointed that we could not get a table on the ground level, even though I had made the request well in advance, and there were several empty tables when we arrived.
it was ok! I feel that the food was a little overpriced (a cuban sandwich is $21 as well for a simlpe burger) I went with my mom and daughter and we sat by a corner wich I felt because we had a child.. would I go again?? maybe in the summer! We do have money left over in out gift card so you know you cant let that go to waste..
Still beautifully situated, still has a caring and responsive staff, but the food has really become mediocre and confused; wine by the glass had been opened way too long...would have sent mine back but had already sent back another, so just let it go. Disappointing.
We were there for a midweek lunch. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meals - I had a quinoa burger and it was excellent - I would certainly order it again. We also had a nice bottle of wine and found the service to be strong and pleasant. If you want to be seated outside, you should probably speak with someone to make that known before arriving. On nice days, it looks to be a hard table to get... Definitely plan to get back soon -
The service at Red Hat was amazing. Our drinks were done perfectly... an old fashioned and another whiskey special that I cannot remember the name of... but SO good. I have Celiac Disease and cannot eat gluten. I am often left with very few choices but the waiter spoke with the chef, who must have understood celiac, and came back with many options for me. He even made some homemade tortillas for my appetizer! I had a huge plate of the most tender mussels with French fries (which were not cross contaminated in a fryer with other food) and my husband had the short ribs which he said were the best he's had (and he gets them everywhere)! The setting is beautiful, right on the Hudson and though it was raining outside, our view was gorgeous. I can't wait to go back.
Usually go to this restaurant for special occasions. Although I love the food and the ambience
The prices are very expensive. The service could be better also. Our waitress started out good taking our order but then never really came back. We had to flag down other wait staff to get dessert and our check. That's not the only time this has happened with this particular waitress.
Sadly, our dining experience was not nearly as good as in the past... overall our meal was big disappointment. Red Hat was always EXCEPTIONAL and this time around... it just was NOT good, and definitely not up to par. Our food was not great (we ordered apps and entrees), the quality was average, at best. The service was scattered and slow, at times. It also appears as though they are cutting corners... little details have been eliminated and it's just not as special anymore. We love this restaurant and hope that they turn it around!
Food was great
My party of three got: onion soup, tuna tartare and a simple salad as appetizers
Mussels, ricotta raviolis, and a chicken sandwich as main course and everything was cooked perfectly
The service was very good too, very attentive
Wine list not very extensive, but with some good choices and reasonable prices.
We will certainly go back when the weather will allow to enjoy the outdoor seating
Lovely place, we celebrated a birthday. The staff was accommodating in every way. Tables are graciously sized and spaced. Adult atmosphere. We were there early so don't know how noisy it might be later on. Delicious food, perfectly prepared and served. We intend to give it a try for a brunch very soon.
Had a lovely lunch with a long time girlfriend.Very relaxing and there was enough diversity on the menu to please both of us. View lovely from the upstairs room, which is a little quieter than the downstairs one, which is a good thing. Will definitely return.
I met my cousin there on Sunday afternoon. We had not seen each other in a long time and were so glad they did not rush us out of the restaurant! As a matter of fact, they never bothered us after they left the check! Food was fantastic, views were amazing! I drove over an hour to get there and every minute was worth it! Already planning our next visit!
What happens to a better than average neighborhood gem after a couple of years of very good reviews from The NY Times and local magazines? The prices get higher, the kitchen gets busier, and the food suffers. Thus, my one-time local favorite, which has long been on my top 10 list, has been scratched from the list. The setting and service are still top notch, but the food no longer lives up to the once deserved reviews.
We began our get away weekend at the Red Hat. A quaint setting overlooking the Hudson River. I had the Swordfish which was perfect. My wife had a chutney garnished chicken dish that she is still raving about. But she says it was second to her espresso martini. A bit pricey but worth every penny. Highly recommend!
I came here with my husband and some friends because we wanted to check out the Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. Unfortunately we were unable to try it because they only have it from Sun-Thu and we came on a Friday. The woman who called to confirm my reservation was rude but the staff at the restaurant was nice and friendly. The view is amazing- very peaceful, I think! The food was alright. I wasn't a big fan of the entrees but I loved the apps! I highly recommend the Tuna Tartar and the Crab Cakes.
