Great authentic Mexican food that will not disappoint. Service could be improved, but overall we enjoyed ourselves.
We had a wonderful time! The food was delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful. We had great conversations about the food and the drink with them. They were attentive without being overbearing. We highly recommend this restaurant!
Extremely outstanding service throughout the meal. The tequila/margarita options were fantastic. All of the shells and chips are made fresh at the restaurant, and they make an amazing guacamole table-side.
The coin margaritas were awesome, they even have organic tequila. But the food was just OK and the waiter got our order wrong, then blamed it on us and didn't offer to fix the mistake
It was so good. Food was excellent. Service was amazing! Highly recommend!!
We were thrilled that Agave opened up again. This is one of our favorite restaurants, and it didn't disappoint!
Superb service every time, every bite tasty, and they are so friendly!
We had a chance to try out the new "Red" Agave and loved it! The menu had a number of items that we liked and all our meals were fresh and flavorful. If you haven't been to this restaurant since it converted to Red Agave - give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
Horrible and disappointing experience. My family arrived in Boulder for family weekend and I booked a reservation at this restaurant weeks in advance to accommodate our big party. I called the night of the reservation to confirm everything, and the restaurant informed me it wasn't even open due to renovations. Needles to say, we were extremely disappointed with both the restaurant and Open Table for this mistake that left our family scrambling and without any dinner reservation for the evening.
The restaurant was CLOSED. Which was a big deal as Parent's weekend at UC Boulder. Clearly a disconnect with Open Table.
This restaurant is out of business. We arrived to find that it had been closed apparently for some time
The restaurant is in a strip mall, but the moment you enter, you forget that. It is very nice inside.
There is a man who makes guacamole tableside. He is awesome. We ate one order so quickly, that we got another. He makes the guacamole to the specs of the diner; as spicy or not as requested. And he is just sweet and wonderful with adults and teens.
The food was delicious, and the restaurant accommodated all of our requests. The tequila selection was amazing.
We will go back for sure.
The entire evening was very ordinary. They have cut back on the menu options substantially. Had a Margarita that was pretty close to pure water. Won't be going back.
great food, great service definitely come back again
Surprised at how good the food was.
The waitstaff was attentive and knowledgeable about what was spicy.
Perfect family meal with a 7-year old. Food and drink excellent, service truly outstanding.
Too much $$
Agave has gone down hill over the years...
Food is average and way too much $$ for the price
Superb in al aspects. Extremely knowledgeable waiter knew the tequila like a pro. New the menu as if he was a cook. Exceeded our expectations
We did now see our server until 20 minutes after being seated, including not being served water. Once we ordered and received our drinks, we did not see our server again until our glasses were empty - maybe another 20-25 minutes. It went on like this all night. The food was not good. The meats were dry and over cooked. The queso had way too much alcohol so it tasted weird. At some point they served another table something flaming and the whole restaurant filled with smoke. The bill was ridiculously expensive. We were there for 2.5 hours. And it was Cinco de Mayo - but that's not why the service was slow. The restaurant was never full and other tables were being served just fine. Terrible experience. WIll not return.
This was our (four adults) third visit during the past four months (Dec. 2016-April 2017) and each time the food, atmosphere, and service have been outstanding. Love the table-made guacamole and the cheese fondue appetizers. The lava bowl dishes are all delicious. The salmon was a bit bland. The coin margarita is top-shelf. Ask for a table near fireplace during winter or a booth in the bar. We have lived in Boulder for 24 years and are serious foodies. Agave is relatively unknown gem waiting to be discovered. It is tucked away in an unimpressive corner retail strip and is easy to miss and forget about. We don't know anyone in ownership or management...or anyone that has ever worked at Agave and have only written one restaurant review prior to this one.
The service on this night was terrible. We waited almost 30 minutes after being seated for the first server to come over and take drink orders. The drinks arrived much later. They ran out of tamales but didn't tell the table until they served the other main dishes. The two folks who ordered tamales didn't want to order different food based on our experience up to now so we split the hot dishes. No server came by to refill our water glasses so we went to the bar and filled them from the bar's water dispenser ourselves because there was no bartender! The manager was not onsite so we couldn't voice our displeasure in person. Overall a horrible experience. We normally enjoy Agave but we'll wait a long time before we return so they can get their act together.
Ambiance was comfortable and attractive. Service was very quick, attentive and informative. Food was unusual but only ok.
Agave is a favorite location for our business lunches. The restaurant was readily able to accommodate our party of 6. The food is excellent and our server remembered us from a few months before. Substitutions were recommended by our server and readily accommodated for a member of our party who is vegetarian.
We used to love Agave, but they seemed to have slipped a bit on quality. The appetizer shrimp were greasy and my husband's entree shrimp dish was supposed to be "flameado" or flambeed, but it was not. The shrimp were cooked well but extremely bland. I always order the verde enchiladas with chicken, and they seemed dry and bland compared to how they used to be. They have also made the menu much smaller and removed some dishes we liked.
We had a very good lunch date at this restaurant. Excellent service, unique food combinations and tastefully decorated hidden gem was great choice for an afternoon get-together.
The restaurant has changed hands, and the menu has changed since I last went there. I regret the changes - there used to be a choice of several salads, all quite good, and now there is only one. One of my favorite fish dishes, chilean sea bass tamarindo, has disappeared. I think there are less molcajetes than there used to be. And they now charge $5 for chips and salsa, which is a bit outrageous. However, the food we had was good, and the service attentive. I have read other recent reviews that were quite negative, but I don't feel negative - just disappointed at the reduced menu. There is also a problem with menu descriptions - for example, the queso fondido (melted cheese) came with unmentioned chorizo, which neither of us could eat. The poblano soup came with cinnamon toast, which was a nice surprise. The sweetness of the toast balanced the spicy-ness of the soup quite pleasantly. The tampiqueno (steak and chicken mole enchilada) claimed to have corn on the cob, but actually had corn kernals, and also included mashed potatoes, which were not mentioned anywhere, but were quite pleasant. On the whole, it was a good experience, except for the unwanted chorizo
We haven't been back to this restaurant in a while and decided to give it another try. We ordered a seafood molcajete. We've had it before and therefore knew what to expect. It comes with clams. When it arrived, half of the clams did not open. We voiced our concern to the waitress. She went back to the kitchen and returned with more clams of which many again did not open. The manager asked about our concern. We told him that unopened clams usually meant the clams were not fresh and were probably dead. He told us that the clams were edible. We had to forcefully express our concern. The manager had no idea that the dead clams could be a problem. The waitress had only worked at the restaurant for 2 weeks and was inexperienced. Meanwhile the rest of the molcajete lacked seafood in terms of quantity. Hardly any fish. No melted cheese. A small piece of grilled cactus. The menu listed calamari as a seafood item. None was present in the dish. This dish was Agave's most expensive dish. The manager refused to discount the price. His response was to give us a card for a free chips and salsa. As can be imagined, there were other issues. We learned that the restaurant is under new ownership. We will not return to this restaurant.
Was disappointed - the food was better some time ago but not now. The plating was poor although service was good. They took away their tequila variety!!!. I was disappointed. I am not recommending this place going forward
Over priced. Bizarre menu. Awful management.
Way too noisy. The music they play was too loud and was of terrible quality.
We loved the interior and the ambience of Agave. The room is beautiful and welcoming. The service was attentive and courteous. The food was delicious and the servings were enough to feed all of us. The only thing that was a bit less exciting were the tortilla chips that were way too salty. The salsa was spicy but unremarkable whereas the guacamole was delicious. Our main courses were all very good. Dessert was average. All in all we had a great experience.
restaurant was closed - sign posted on door regarding liquor license. I don't know why Opentable wasn't aware.
Everyone's dishes were small, incredibly overpriced, and in one case so dry it was almost inedible. Service was lacking. Cocktails were overpriced and very boring.
Our waiter was very nice and patient with the toddler in our group.
Great place to get great from scratch Mexican food. The service is superb!
Certainly nicer than your typical Mexican restaurant.
The giant volcano bowl was incredible! And so was the white cheese dip. Best date night in a while!
A great retreat after a busy day.
A little surprise in the neighborhood. A bit pricey but really good food, service and ambiance. We liked the quiet and that you can hear yourself talk. Great find!
