American
Recess serves up good times, delicious American fare and zero red tape in Chicago’s West Loop. Executive Chef Daniel Weiland’s menu taps into the cravings of everyday life, offering casually elevated twists on well-loved dishes with a touch of playful Chicago swagger. From starters such as loaded waffle fry bites with housemade giardiniera to mains like grilled skirt steak and a double-crust pot pie to banana pudding and other retro desserts, there’s something for every appetite (including vegan and gluten-free). Liquid refreshment is as delicious at Recess. Beverage Manager Alec Pignotti takes a bright, ingredient-driven approach to the cocktail menu, which features both classic tipples and original creations, some with tongue-in-cheek references to Chicago culture and politics. Water Coolers, the signature large-format cocktails, are true to their name, wheeled out and served in tabletop water coolers. A well-curated selection of beer and wine rounds out the bar program.

This is the best experience I’ve had taking my 2.5yo to a bar! The staff was so accommodating, brought games for her to play, gave us the area with the couches, offered to help with the stroller, and walked me to the bridal suite to change a diaper because the bars bathroom doesn’t have a station. Even if the food was the worst, I’d still go!

Everything was great! The orange juice, avocado toast, flip flopper and sliders were all amazing! We can’t wait to go back! The manager and waitress were both knowledgeable and very friendly

It's a unique space with lots of high tops and TVs. Great place for drinks but as far as the restaurant goes, it is severely lacking. The food was good enough bar food, but the devil is in those details and in a foodie neighborhood like the west loop, you've got to be better than just good enough.

A very cool addition to the neighborhood! Went for a weeknight dinner and the food was great and service even better. Definitely get the waffle fry bites. The space is urban cool, as to be expected from Fulton Market warehouse spaces and perfect for parties and hanging with friends. Can't wait for summer because the outdoors is going to be a perfect hangout spot and hopefully some bocce!
