Ray's in the City Ratings and Reviews
Food was what you'd expect at this price point. Steak was very good. The servers were very nice but they missed a few things that you'd really expect staff in a restaurant of this caliber to be cognizant of (missing utensils, all the drinks on the table empty for a really long time, etc.).
Our server seemed irritated to have to serve us. He didn't tell us about any of the specials. Later, we watched as a cheerful server walked his table through the specials and acted very accommodating. The food was mediocre. The tuna nigiri was mealy and the yellowtail stringy. Would not visit again.
Arrived at reservation time....was charged $34. for valet parking...paid in order to be on time for rez, but had to wait 15 minutes to be seated anyway, then was seated at a crappy table with waiter traffic buzzing all over, was moved to a more desirable table, but the waiter there was so horrible that a different waiter finally noticed we weren't being served and took over our table. He was great, and the lobster cobb salad was good, but the salmon oscar came slow and was charred on the edges, and not cooked enough in the middle...all and all , I want my $180. back. This clearly ain't Rays on the River!
The food was outstanding. We started with an appetizer of fried calamari. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection. One of us had trout and the other had shrimp and grits. Both were outstanding. The waiter was not attentive and I sat with an empty drink for almost half the time we were there. Thankfully the food came out hot because it was delivered by a food runner and not the waiter.
They need better options for parking. Getting to their location and finding parking was really hard that I ended having to pay $20 for 2 hours and my meal was distracted by always watching clock. Wish I knew the parking added such a craziness to the experience beforehand
Unfortunately - we didn't have a good experience ... Two diners ( out of 6) ordered the tenderloin - it was overdone and very chewy...and our waiter was no where to be seen. Just the fact that he did not check back with us once food was delivered was a bad sign..then once the manager came over ( guess HE could see we were looking for help?) ..the waiter was probably even more "ticked off" by having to wait on 6 women...the manager took off the 2 meals ..we were willing to pay for them...just wanted server to acknowledge our table...sorry to report he got an adequate tip..nothing more.
Ray's was very fun. The service was excellent. The food -- fantastic. I only rated it down in ambiance because we were in a back-ish kind of room, where I don't like to sit. There were 5 of us, so we couldn't ask to be easily moved into the main part of the restaurant. Loved it all, though!
Rays in the City is always good food. It is very busy during the market at America’s Mart. It is right next door so it is extremely easy, good food. We had a reservation, so we were seated right away, even though many people were waiting. We were seated in a back corner which was nice, but still noisy because of the amount of people. We always eat here when we are staying downtown....just make a reservation.
While the wait staff serving the food was excellent, the hostess almost made me leave without eating. My friend and I had a reservation before going to a play at the Fox Theatre. When we entered the restaurant, we had to wait 10-15 minutes for the hostess to come to the front. Don't know where she was. She first tried to seat us in the bar area. There were plenty of empty tables because it was only 5:30pm. We wanted a relaxing table before going to the fox. We had to remind her that we reserved a table and that was our preference. She took us to a 2nd table in the middle of the room with plenty of booths and window seats available. After asking a second time, she seated us in a booth.
Kudos to the wait staff who made our evening very enjoyable!
Bryan was our server. He was awesome and knowledgeable. He did a great job of checking in on us, but not interrupting an intimate meal. The sea bass is AMAZING. Seriously one of the best dishes I have ever had. We will certainly return and hopefully, Bryan will be available to take care of us again.
Our server was very nice, attentive and relatively quick. The calamari was okay, but the lemon aioli had no flavor. I ordered the NY Strip Steak and it was awful. The steak was devoid of flavor and there was a lot of gristle and tendons running through - not very appetizing. The mashed potatoes were okay and the side of creamed spinach was the sole bright spot. If you are going to spend this type of money, go to The Capital Grille - yes it’s a chain, but their steaks never disappoint.
Dined here while on a trip to Atlanta, wanted seafood near the hotels. Ray's was busy when I arrived but my table was ready on time. Definitely reserve ahead unless you are okay with a wait. Not an extensive menu but nice choices and everything was wonderful. The service was attentive and pleasant and it was an enjoyable place for a weeknight meal alone. The scallops with parmesan lobster risotto was wonderful.
This was our second time dinIng here. The food is outstanding. Lots of options and the atmosphere was very nice. The hostess was friendly and personable. We had excellent service the first night with Khalik. The second night the server, Tom was absent most of the evening.
Probably the worst dining experience I have ever had, and I dine out and travel ALOT! Expected a lot more with a reputation like Rays. Waited 10 minutes at the table before being greeted. Ordered bottle of wine which arrived but no wine glasses. I only had a fork in my silverware set and my husband only had a knife. Salad and soup came fairly quickly. Bread service came after the salad but no bread plates served with it. And then we waited and waited and waited for our food. We sat at 8:15pm and at 9:40pm still didn't have our food. While we were waiting, there were 6 dirty tables in our area that had been dirty since we sat down. No sign of a busboy or manager. Finally we got our food only to be told they were out of 2 things we ordered. Mashed potatoes and creamed corn. My scallop dinner was the most sorry plate of food I've ever seen. 3 burnt scallops on a mush of obviously microwaved "risotto." And my husbands salmon served on a cold bed of spinach. We had enough and a server ( who was not ours, and we had not seen our server since he delivered the salad) named Destiny could tell something was up. We explained everything and she was genuinely concerned and began to explain the rough night they were having. I understand every restaurant will have a bad night but what concerned me most was that she said "we run out of lots of food on Sundays, I would tell you to come earlier in the day if you come on a Sunday again." And proceeded to tell us they were out of most of their desserts, a bone in steak special, sides etc. My thought, what does the manager do exactly if the restaurant consistently runs out of food on Sunday? Order more food, increase prep levels, staff more help on Sunday's. Manager Chris came over and apologized and gave us a $50 gift card as well as bought the meal the little we ate. We ended up back at our hotel ordering room service at 11pm. Will we go back to use the gift card, probably not. And definitely not on a Sunday. Just disappointing!
We enjoyed our dinner while visiting. My son and I had a special occasion to celebrate so I wanted to take him to Ray's. I had not been in a while but always enjoyed going when I used to go to AmericasMart during Market. We were not disappointed. Our waiter was extremely nice and we ended up splitting the crab cake appetizer, the strip steak and the mahi mahi special. All was very good but the fish was a bit too spicy and dressed so you couldn't really taste how good the fish was. Would definitely go again.
