Ray’s and Stark Bar Ratings and Reviews
Friday night from late spring to early fall is open air concert time at LACMA featuring great musicians from all over the country making Ray's and Stark the place to be for an early Friday dinner. On warm evenings dine outside to best appreciate the music but escape to the warmth of their indoor setting on cooler evenings. Considering the nature of the venue, the restaurant offers a reasonable selection of entrees and a good selection of wines to pair them with. For those not into the wine scene there is also an interesting selection of beers and a full service bar offering cocktails for every taste. All in all a very good dining experience on any evening LACMA is open but especially on Fridays during outdoor concert season. A reservation is recommended.
Great service - one of my favorite restaurants for the last 7 years. We were literally the only ones seated inside for the entire meal. Super attentive server with a great attitude.. I just don't think we got checked in on open table for my reservation because I received an open table email saying "sorry we missed you". We were very much there, table of 3. Just got home 20 mins ago.
I have had lunch here many times while visiting the museum. Lunch yesterday was a big disappointment. The crust of the toasted bread underneath the smoked salmon was so hard I could not cut it, even after requesting a sharper knife. Service was very slow even though there were quite a few servers circulating around the outdoor and indoor dining spaces. Although convenient when visiting LACMA, I hesitate to dine here again.
A good friend I hadn't seen in months and I had a lovely dinner on Friday night. There was a jazz band playing which was wonderful, but it was so loud we found it hard to talk…so the noise made conversation a bit trying-- but the people watching (made us both fall in love with LA again!), the service, and the food were all great!
The prices are outrageous compared to the size, taste and appearance of the food. $24 burger has cold fries, the $28 lobster salad had very little lobster and too much lettuce.
Their pizza is good but usually takes a long time. It is a shame that for the only restaurant at LACMA, they should have better tasting food, amount of food and prices.
We will not go back.
I have eaten at Ray's three times in the last 6 months. My husband and I really like the ambiance. We are members of the museum and we often eat there when visiting LACMA. We have met friends there on many occasions. It is a great place to people watch.
The food is good but I think it could have a more varied menu. I had the salami pizza, my husband had the soft-shelled crab and our friend had the sea bass. Everybody enjoyed their meal. Aside from the pizza, the servings were on the small side.
We have always had great service. This last visit, it wasn't as good. Our waiter seemed new, a little overwhelmed and not as knowledgable or friendly as our previous waiters. Overall it was good service and a positive experience for all.
Prices are high and there are few choices on the lunch menu. Two of us chose the less expensive Kobe cheeseburger that was dry, overcooked and virtually tasteless. French fries were dry and salt-free. Desserts were all prohibitive at $11 each. And we were not an impoverished group!
Service was efficient and satisfactory. It is normally pleasant to dine there before an exhibition, but food quality and prices need to change. The room was moderately full, but not at capacity.
An inventive, always changing menu is only one of the attractions at this chic restaurant in LACMA...stimulating galleries at this world-class museum are just steps away. Definitely recommend dining here as part of any visit to LACMA. Service is excellent, too.
My girlfriend and I had lunch here before seeing an exhibit at LACMA. I had been there several times before. The food, service, etc. is always good. We ate indoors because there was a heat wave and needed the air conditioning but the outside tables are more fun for people watching.
It's a good spot to eat before or after visit to LACMA.
The food is generally fresh and seasonal.
For our dinner, we ordered several dishes to share: a season salad, the soft -shell crab, and a prosciutto pizza - all delicious.
The only drawback was the noise level was VERY high, so if you are interested in having a conversation, Ray is not the place. But for people watching, Ray is perfect.
I had high hopes for this place, since dining here about a year ago, and was looking forward to trying other things on the menu...
They've since cut the menu in half, and service was indifferent & inept.
And, terribly overpriced for what they offer.
The food here is very good and the location can't be beat .But the service is just... weird. We were seated in a pretty empty restaurant, yet it took quite awhile to get noticed. (hello?) we were served food but no plates. had to ask for them. This is the second time I've been embarrassed bringing an out-of-town guest here. I'm sorry to say it-- because it's a cool place. I think the problem lies with management. The bar on the other hand, is wonderful.
LACMA Jazz night is great but the service at Ray's Stark Bar is consistently sub par. Although our waitress was a nice lady she had no support and too many tables. Asking several times for a glass of wine, water and waiting a long time to order is just unacceptable when in a restaurant of this level and price point.
