Wonderful! Greatly enjoyed the meal and the staff explaining the sourcing and prep of all the excellent courses.
Very well done comparable to best anywhere. You pay for it but there is value for money
We had a great dinner experience at Raymond’s Restaurant from beginning to end! The service was impeccable with a very knowledgeable waiter who was very patient in reviewing the menu items and answering all of our questions. The food was delicious and cooked to everyone’s liking. The beef tenderloin was melt in your mouth and the cod was amazing. We all did the 3 course meals and some of us added the wine pairing. Portions were generous and we all left full and very satisfied. The spices and sauces added the right flavors to top each dish off! It was great to see so many locally sourced ingredients used. We had a lovely round table in the corner by a window and the ambiance was lovely. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for that special dinner out. We will be back!
Raymond's restaurant is a sophisticated establishment. The interior of the main dining room sets a tone of elegance and refinement. The menu essentially has a three course meal with options for each course. There are two other choices of a five or seven course meal. Wine pairings are also offered. I had a wonderful aquavit old fashioned to begin the experience. I chose the seven course fixed menu with wine pairings. The sommelier was very helpful and his choices for each course were exceptional. Throughout the meal my waiter was good about describing the preparations and not at all pretenttious---very easy to understand.
I would comment that the food was uniformly wonderfully flavored. Portions are a bit small so as not to overwhelm the appetite. When I finished I felt satisfied by the variety and complexity of the meal.
Had the most wonderful dining experience here...it's not just the care taken with the preparation of the food but such subtle combinations of flavors using the very best ingredients. Sophie gave us fabulous table service and Tracy's wine parings were a revelation! I highly recommend doing the wine parings when dining there...that's an experience in itself. Dessert was beautiful just when you thought it couldn't get any better! These people really know their craft..kitchen to plate to glass! Bravo!
Spectacular. Best meal we’ve had in some time. Local sourcing makes s huge difference. Wonderful service. Great wine. Had 5 course meal. A+ rating. Halibut was a bit under/spiced.
Our server, Adam, was truly exceptional. Food was incredible. Drinks where amazing, especially the ones the bartender made specific to our preferred tastes. We’ve eaten at a lot of fine dining places and this place ranks up there with the best of them!
Our evening at Raymonds was a most unbelievable experience.
We were ushered into an elegant dining room with views of St John's harbour and spectacularly large chandeliers overhead.
This was the final night of a wonderful trip to Newfoundland and Labrador and the dinner was a fitting end.
Our server explained the menu options and we opted for the 3 course prix fixe. There were 3 choices within each course.
He was most knowlegable, friendly and helpful and the service was superb. The serving utensils and dishes were unique and so very appropriate (the fish knife not often seen) was brought for the main course.
The dishes were artfully presented, the portions were extremely generous and the food was the perfect temperature for each dish.
We started with pasta and scallop, entrees were halibut and lobster and ended with rhubarb and blueberry dessert.
This was a dinner unlike any we have ever eaten, in a beautiful space attended by delightful ladies and gentlemen in a province that showed the utmost hospitality and friendliness to travelers from Toronto.
We thank you for being the experience that ended a wonderful 2 weeks.
My party & I were on vacation to St. John’s and decided to try the highly recommended Raymond’s. We had their 5 course tasting with wine pairing and it was beyond excellent. The food was so fresh & presentation was creative. The service was impeccable, the staff warm & charming. An unforgettable experience.
I’ve been to tasting dinners before. But I’ve never left hungry as we had after Raymonds’. Also, the wine pairing was poor. The first one was a sparkling from Nova Scotia... really? I don’t care spending 500 for two, unless I leave the place disappointed as I had. Don’t take me wrong. The food was impeccable.
As one would expect at this price point, the food was delicious. Tartare was worth writing home about. The wine pairing was on point. The high ceilings made for a spacious and airy feel. Staff were attentive but not overbearing.
Spectacular meals all around from the tasting menu. Very accommodating to dietary needs and the staff were kind and personable throughout the meal. A must-see (or eat) when you visit St. John's.
Great place, great service, great food. An outstanding experience!
What a wonderful surprise.... This restaurant would be considered one of the best in any location. They took advantage of locally available ingredients to create a imaginative and delicious cuisine. The service was professional, friendly and enthusiastic. The interior design was classic without being stuffy.
Outstanding Service, Amazing Food. Known to be the most expensive restaurant in town and I believe it deserves to be. However, I won't justify going back for a long time because it's still a bit above my price range for a good meal.
Why husband and I were visiting from Ontario and Raymonds had been recommended by several sources. We had the 3 course meals and I had the wine pairing. Everything was done to perfection! Most of the food descriptions were 'way over our heads'. Our server was patient in describing each dish. A most enjoyable evening.
Incredibly original courses, beautifully presented. The staff was really pleasant and when asked for a special request at closing time i was happily accommodated. All around wonderful experience for our 10year anniversary. Thank you to everyone at Raymonds
My review would be exactly like WholeEOh below! Couldn’t say it better myself. This is a place where you’d yell “The Emperor has no clothes”!
Leave poorer and hungry
The staff was amazing, strongest part of the night.
The food: I got the seven course tasting menu. The execution varied, mostly uninspired and not particularly adventurous. My fish dish was overly salty, most dishes came up a bit shy of being truly good. The scallions pasta dish with crab and lobster was actually quite good, would order a la carte for certain. Generally though there was a lack of balance and the execution didn't make up for the lack of brilliance in creation.
Wines: I got the pairings. The wines were good, but i often found they didn't enhance the food significantly, felt more like trying to find a tasty wine that wouldn't clash with the dish. They didn't have as much harmony as I had hoped.
It was an overall ok experience, didn't feel like great value considering the amount of money I had spent.
If you want to experience dining (and not just eat), and are willing to pay well, this restaurant serves up a delightful dinner. Everything was superb - the perfect service (food and wine), attention to detail and design. Well worth the splurge!
Incredible meal and experience. Myself and my wife had the 5 course menu with wine pairings. Each course was elegant and delicious. The wine pairings were spot on. Planning to head back every year for our anniversary
Slow slow food service. But great food. Took us about two and a half hours for 5 course
Absolutely amazing dinner. We had the seven course tasting menu with wine pairing. Absolutely phenomenal. Best meal ever.
Great seafood. Flexible in their tasting menus in allowing customers mix of different number of items and allowing half wine pairing. Good use of local ingredients. Would definitely come back on my next visit to St. John’s.
Dining room service and quality of some dishes not comparable to the reputation or the price
Tasting menu. Wine pairing
Great food but even greater wine pairing
Excellent service, food and cocktails. We chose to do the seven course meal and all were very delicious. Tables are a bit close together as we could hear everything our neighbors said. Staff was excellent.
Last night of a 9-day trio through Newfoundland. We’d just spend 3 days at the Fogo Island Inn, which set a very high bar for high quality dinners. We had reserved Raymond’s on the recommendation of a friend from St John’s. And we’d heard about it from Anthony Bourdain’s show. It lived up to its reputation. We loved the casual but upscale environment, the view out to the harbor made a great distraction, the servers were outstanding with well-delivered descriptions of the food and the wine. We did the 5-course prix-fixe and I did the wine pairing. Wait staff were very accommodating of our one request for a substitution and for a remake of a cocktail. The food was excellent and the wine pairings were well thought out. But what made this a really great dining experience was the interaction with the staff who were all so knowledgeable and friendly.
I had high expectations for Raymonds and it was a BIG let down.
My wife and I saw Raymonds on every top restaurants/must visit restaurants lists for St. John's so we though it was a sure thing.
It ended up being a pretentious overpriced waste of money.
If this would have been my first fine dining experience it probably would have been the last. Luckily I have been to various fine establishments where I ended up spending more money and thinking it was worth every penny.
The portions were almost non existent and with the exception of a parsnip puree nothing caught my attention (seriously, a parsnip puree was the highlight of my meal).
Our waiter looked and sounded the part but seemed to lack any interest in us. He was there and gone
so quickly that I didn't even get an opportunity to let him know that we were celebrating an anniversary. The server taking care of the table next to us was warm and chatty and I found myself wishing we had her instead.
At one point the Sommelier (that was a nice enough lady but really didn't seem to fit in at such a fine establishment) came to present the wine pairing and my wife's previous wine glass hadn't been cleared. By the time they sorted that out, my wife had finished her tiny portion course so the wine was paired with NOTHING!
The night before our trip to Raymonds my wife and I went to Mallard Cottage and spent a quarter of what we spent at Raymonds. We got more food that had my taste buds singing and the service was top notch.
Not only will I not recommend Raymonds, I will actively warn people against wasting their time and money there.
St. John's is full of so many great restaurants that you are better off saving the money you would have spent on one visit to Raymonds and use it to splurge at 2 or 3 other great establishments in the area.
My husband and I celebrated our 4th anniversary at Raymonds as we are in town for the week. We had the 3 course meal as we wanted to choice our own options. We both enjoyed the appetizer and main course, but were disappointed by the dessert. I read on Instagram that their dessert chef had won an award as one of the Top dessert Chef's in Canada, but the desserts we got were very simple (ice cream with fancy presentation). May I just had expectations after the main and appetizer. Hence, I gave 4 stars, overall we received great service at the restaurant, and enjoyed the quiet but elegant dinning environment.
Food and presentation of the dishes were top notch. Service was excellent
The restaurant was beautiful, with an elegant but comfortable ambience.
Our waiter Andrew, and the sommelier (sorry, I can't remember his name) were so knowledgeable about the food and wines, and made the whole experience much more than just a place to have dinner!
The food was delicious and perfectly done, and the wine recommendations complemented each dish perfectly.
A perfect way to end our Newfoundland trip!
A superb super special birthday dinner.....excellent as always, many thanks, tj
The food, ambiance and service were excellent! We decided to have a three course dinner with wine pairings - truly impressed with how complementary the wine pairings were for each dish. It was also very nice that some of the pairings included local (Nova Scotia) wines. Wonderful experience!
Great service excellent staff
We loved everything about our meal. We travelled from bc and a big part of the trip was our dinner at Raymond’s. Our server Reagan was fantastic. Very knowledgeable and pleasant. Along with the sommelier who’s name we forgot they went above and beyond to make our experience memorable and all around amazing. The food was fantastic and a true reflexion of the time and place. Highly recommend it.
The ambience was excellent. Our every request was granted. The servers were very informative and friendly like all Newfoundlanders we have met. The Halibut was excellent and the portion was large. We had a cheese tray for an appetizer and would heartily recommend it. You receive a variety of crackers that are unique to the restaurant that made the pairing with the cheese enjoyable. The dessert was delicious but disappointing in size. It was about two spoonfuls of dessert with one spoon of ice cream. I would recommend the wine pairing. The Nova Scotia Ancienne Chardonnay was the best.
What a fabulous unexpected spot in St. John's Newfoundland.
We had the 7 course tasting menu with the wine parings. The food and service were outstanding. The sommelier and wine pairings were also fantastic. I would highly recommend this as one of the best food experiences in Canada.
Amazing service, atmosphere and food. We will definitely be recommending to our friends
