We’ve been here before and it’s consistently excellent food and service. Staff always helpful and chef does come out and talk to guests sometimes. Overall excellent dining experience
All good!! Interesting food!! We loved all:)
It was such a bright, open, happy, welcoming space. I had been visiting Portland from the East coast and Ray was the place I was most excited to eat at and it did not disappoint! Usually when you travel you overeat a lot of heavy bad foods, but everything here was so fresh and delicious that we all walked away feeling amazing! We still probably ate way too much because it was so delicious we just kept ordering more. Service was also wonderful. Everyone was so nice and attentive, made the experience even more fun. I would absolutely recommend.
Everything was good. Great service. The music was very loud. This made it difficult to have a conversation.
The menu items were unique. They were composed of a good blend of flavors.
What a wonderfulinvention of Chef Jenn Louis. She took a successful retaiarant and changed it to something new and more successful. It isn’t so much Israeli food as an Israeli take on all middle eastern food.
We love places that make us think. And laugh.
Fluffy kavash. Spinach and cream dip.
Flatbread is a melange of New Mexico and Beirut. Baklava is a blend of .... Just try it!
As always wonderful food, carefully crafted and graciously served. We were able to try a huge range of things and enjoy one another’s company over subtle, interesting dishes. This is why we keep coming back and bringing out of town guests! Many thanks.
Extremely tasty combinations. Delicious use of spicing.
Chef/owner, Jenn Louis, is terrific hostess - mingling with patrons and answering questions. Took a class from her on how to cook octopus just before dinner and it was fun and informative. Great overall experience.
Had a great meal with friends at Ray. The food is creative and interesting; the carrot hummus is memorable as is the cabbage. Very vegetarian friendly with attentive service!
Very fresh, everything made by the chef including the drink mixers. We had a bottle of wine from Lebanon which was unique and very good. Large open doors to enjoy the weather but not roast. Meats were fantastic, pita and hummus too.
Ray never disappoints. The food is so full of different flavors, colors, & textures. Both the vegetarian and the meat options are excellent. The cocktails are creative and well balanced. And for an earlier bite the happy hour menu is a great one.
Great service and delicious food.
Came here with some friends. Our server was really nice but way too busy. We were there almost an hour before we got our first starter. Overall felt like Food was fine but way too expensive for the quality and quantity. Would not return.
Food was delicious & that is why I’d return. Cocktails were too expensive but happy hr price was good. Waiter socialized with a friend at the bar so it took a moment to get his attention a couple of times otherwise he was great.
I had been here before and it was absolutely fantastic. This time was very meh.
We have been here several times and the food and service have always been way above average.
Delicious! The lamb flatbread was amazing.our waitress helped us decide on what to order. We also lived the hummus, fresh naan, and the Israeli salad. Great wine list as well.
In 1990 I visited Israel. This restaurant brought me right back to Jaffa on the shores of the Mediterranean, one of my favorite spots on earth.
Amazing food, great service, and romantic ambiance!
Great service, incredibly kind and attentive server. Beautiful food and a wonderful ambience.
Truly one of the best dining experiences I have had in a very long time. We eat out often and would consider ourselves foodies and this meal was excellent. Our server was outstanding and we didn't have a single dish that wasn't great. I can't say enough about Ray and we are lucky that it is just down the street from us. We will be regulars.
We love this place....the food is great with a variety of options that changes frequently enough to keep regulars interested. Jenn is a top notch chef and the staff is always knowledgeable and kind. Shannon is an amazing hostess and waitress. Definitely, a foodie's place
Such a delicious and memorable meal. My boyfriend and I took his parents, who were visiting from out of town, here since they really enjoy Mediterranean and Israeli cuisine. The dishes were so creative and flavorful. It's very shared-plate friendly, so we got to try nearly half the menu. Jenn Louis came to the table and chatted with us a few times, she's super friendly and sweet. The doors were rolled up and we enjoyed the breeze on a warm 85 degree day. Grabbed the seasonal cocktail they had that day. So great food, great drinks, great atmosphere and the service was extremely friendly and informed. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice date, get together, celebration or to satisfy strong cravings for Israeli cuisine.
The chef was friendly and very involved. The front of house was flustered and understaffed. The food and cocktails were excellent. The restaurant would benefit most from better staffing, but overall very enjoyable.
Food: Steelhead prepared perfectly, subtle sauce helped fish stand out, frittata overly dill, though; Lamb burger nicely seasoned, though too much bun.
Service: Two takes - first, we were warmly welcomed by the owner, and attended to promptly and courteously by staff. Once our order was in, however, service disappeared (we needed to go to the bar to pay). It seems as if the place was short of staff, which took away from the overall experience.
With better service, Ray is well worth searching out.
Wow, wow, wow. This is much more then expected and lots of good food and some very good flavors. A MUST try. I will be coming back anytime I am in Portland and i am sure you will not be disappointed. Very open feel and friendly staff add to the total event. If looking for 5 star Michelin Ray is not that but if looking for a relaxed feel and many wonderful flavors then Ray is going to be the place to be.
the food is extremely flavorful.
Jenn Louis is superb chef/proprietor
service is great
we feel very welcome
ambience is outstanding
very excellent comfortable dining experience
The food was unique. Their Kavas drink was amazing. The dates were very flavor full.
Delightful, knowledgeable server and great food—tastes mostly new to us. But noisy. Will definitely return and recommend to others.
This is our 3rd time going to Ray. We will definitely be returning often. Great and unique dishes.
We had an absolutely lovely experience. Everyone was so kind. From the hostess to the waitress. We could not have felt any more special. They were just wonderful to all six of us. The food is amazing. Our cocktails were creative and delicious.
Quite possibly the best dining experience I have ever had in Portland. Not sure why Ray isn’t receiving the recognition they deserve.
Outstanding food. Excellent service. Fantastic menu with several selections I would never imagine enjoying but, much to my surprise, I actually enjoyed very much.
The word “Wow” kept slipping into our conversation as we ate.
Ray serves a cabbage that should win an award all by itself! I hope I didn’t loose you at “cabbage” but it really does need to be mentioned because it would be a shame if you go to Ray and you don’t order it.
Give this not-so-ordinary restaurant a try.
Our waiter had an attitude from the moment he sat us. He really needs to work on his service and table side demeanor. The food was ok, but had so much potential.
Great food, the cabbage and Brussels sprouts were amazing. We liked everything we tried
The food is all excellent. I don't believe you will find dishes prepared this way anywhere else, at least not in Portland.
Some restaurants try too hard to be unique and the food just doesn't cut it. Ray nailed every dish we had.
We will be returning shortly.
This was my third visit to Ray since a friend turned me on to it back in February. This has now become my favorite place for Israeli cuisine in Portland. One way or another I have tried almost everything on the menu and have not experienced any disappointments. Not being a fan of Octopus I tried it with some reluctance and I am glade that I did. Don't overlook the skirt steak, brussel sprouts or the carrot humus with lamb. Save room for dessert! and enjoy some of interesting drink options.
Great service and great food. The carrots were a little spicier than expected and the noise level was too load. Everything else was great
Great food great time! Chef took great care of us at the counter. Will be back again for sure.
Having loved Lincoln, Chef/Owner Jenn Louis's previous restaurant, we'd meant to try Ray. The confluence of PDX Dining Month and Spring Break finally got us there, and we were we sad to realize we'd missed a whole year of great Ray meal opportunities. We were back just a few days later, to reprise the Dining Month menu with our adult children and well-behaved 16 month old granddaughter.
Both meals were absolutely delicious. The first time, we tried two of the specialty cocktails. This margarita lover had a hard time choosing among the unusual and creative choices but ultimately opted for the Goat Hangar with its pomegranate juice and tequila. My husband had a terrific drink too - can't remember its name but I know it had beet juice!
The Dining Month meal was delicious and ample; I was happy to have it twice that week. We also tried the dates from the small plates menu, which were fabulous. Ditto for the gefilte fish special on the menu in honor of Passover. I've never had gourmet gefilte fish before and hope it shows up again at Ray. On our return visit I tried the poached pears and I could see going back, just for dessert, when they are on the menu. The service was friendly, casual, yet still attentive, and the waitpersons and servers were terrific with our littlest dinner guest. Chef Jenn even came out from the kitchen to say hi and get a hug from her.
Immediately before our first visit, we enjoyed a complimentary wine tasting, which I believe is something Ray plans to do more frequently by inviting local vineyards come in pre-dinner to showcase their wines. It's a nice addition. I am not a restaurant critic and while we did ask about ingredients sadly I don't remember what made the dates, gefilte fish, pears and other dishes so outstanding. But I do remember the fine presentations and the great taste. Take a peek at the menu to get a better sense of how Chef Jenn mixes and matches worldwide flavors with local ingredients. It's a real win/win all around.
