Rare Steakhouse - Washington DC

Expensive, but worth every bite.
We sat at the bar. Our bartender was delightful and he made an amazing Old Fashion drink. Our food was delicious. We ordered the Filet and lobster. Both were delicious but would have preferred the lobster have been served hot, not cold.
Great service. Enjoyed thoroughly
It was our first time dining at Rare. We throughly enjoyed everything about our experience. The personal touch with the menu. The server was very patient and explained menu items and answered our questions. I would gladly recommend Rare to others. And I will return.
I have been to many great steakhouses all over the Country. This was our first time at Rare and it was frankly the best overall experience to date. Parking was easy, the hostess was very charming and our waiter was nothing less than exceptional. We tried everything from the steak and tuna tartare and octopus to start and we enjoyed several great cuts of steak. For the foodie in you, there is no better ppace
Have the business class pre-fixe. It's amazing
Steak was really delicious, but the duck was not that soft and tasty, anyway the restaurant didn’t charged us for the duck. Atmosphere very nice,
Wonderful place fabulous food incredible prices
Great food, great service, very knowledgeable sommelier. Couldn’t be happier with the experience. Will return.
New Years diner was great. Even though I had a 8:15 reservation as was asked to wait 30 minutes. Could have earned 5 stars. A comped drink was give for the inconvenience. The food was outstanding and the service was stellar.
We came to celebrate New Year’s Eve. We had a reservation for 8:15 and waited 45mjn until we were seated because they were “running behind”. Even with a reservation we waited just as long as the walk-in parties. When we finally were seated our waitress so not attentive at all. She started telling us about the menu and then just stopped abruptly and just walked away completely. When she came back she didn’t even mention it or apologize just asked if we were ready to order. We finally ordered and our food took 45 min to arrive. When it finally arrive it was just OK. My steak was subpar and not very flavorful. Overall the meal was just okay but the service made the whole experience worse. It was honestly super disappointing because we were really looking forward to the meal.
Went for NYE. Took about 40 minutes to get our table, but discovered the cheese bar as a result. Once at our table, our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. We were particularly impressed with the Wagyu our server recommended as a starter, the rib cap, and the mashed potatoes. The only minuses were:
- my husband was overcharged on a rail drink using cheap liquor ($17 for Jim Beam?), and the explanation we were given was rather confusing.
- after waiting 40 minutes for a table, we were sat by the kitchen door
I would also note that the downstairs restaurant is more sophisticated in style than the upstairs, so if there is a way to request sitting downstairs, that would be best. In addition, the restaurant is downstairs. While there is an elevator, if you have mobility issues or are dining with those you do, they should make accommodations for that (as this was our first time dining at Rare, I am not sure whether they do).
Long story short: great food, some confusing management/design elements.
From being greeted at the door to paying the check, our experience was nothing less than excellent! All of the service personnel were pleasant and prompt. Because it was our anniversary, special menus were prepared for us!The food was impeccably prepared and delicious. This is one of the best restaurants that I have visited in DC. I will definitely recommend Rare as the place to visit for a fine meal. Thanks Rare!!
The service was amazing. The staff was very attentive, the steak and bread they bring out was great, but the sides were just ok.
From the reception till the end the service and all the details were excelent. Very confortable ambient and service. The go to place for any special occasion. Thanks we all enjoy our time there and the food the most...!!!
Our party of 6 had a great dining experience. The service was excellent and the food was awesome.
Great ambiance. Some of the food wasn’t that great (grilled octopus and pork belly had that freezer taste) but the corn pudding was so good we ordered some to go. Asked for medium well ribeye that was more like medium rare.
We had dinner here on Christmas Eve. despite a very busy evening, service was wonderful and the place was quiet enough for conversation. The scallops were absolutely delicious.
Buffalo ribeye is one of the best steaks I’ve ever had!
Christmas Eve dinner. Everyone went out of their way to make it a great experience!
We had to return 3 stakes because they were not cooked as ordered
Something changed? Very different experience from last visit. Food not as good. Service slow & unresponsive. Stingy wine pour & not inexpensive. Will look elsewhere for a hamburger next time. Probably Hay Adams bar.
Solid food, nothing amazing, could’ve been better-
We held a business dinner to celebrate an employee's 10th anniversary with our company. The evening was perfect, including a customized menu to commemorate the occasion. The wait staff were knowledgeable and fun. A great evening. Even one of our guests who grew up in Nebraska was impressed with the steaks!
The staff always enjoy rare. It's a great treat. Not many options for cocktails that I like, however the smoke and fire is a hit! We enjoy the Lunch Pre-fixe meal often!
The food is delicious. My only concern was the hamburger bun came apart while cutting and eating. Otherwise, the meat is tender, juicy and the best tasting restaurant burger.
yes. Have been several times now and have real recommended to friends. Allison Unger is great.
Out of town folks
When we arrived, we were informed that the 7:30 reservation made on Open table was rescheduled for 8:15. Apparently they called my cell phone but there was no history of the call on my phone. Despite that, the manager, Lydia Sweet, offered us a round of drinks and got us seated within 1o minutes. She was fantastic, attentive, and took great care of our group. Cannot say the same for our waiter, Francisco, who did not seem engaged at all. Food was delicious and the rib cap steaks are incredible. Place is a bit loud but oozes with steak house feel. Put Rare on your list of places to dine.
I had the NY strip steak. I found it somewhat fatty with gristle. Not worth the price.
Great steak restaurant. I suggest the RIb Eye Cap. Very good wine list but a bit on the high side for a good bottle
Meal was great but service was very slow for such an expensive dinner. Sat for 20 minutes before we saw our waiter who then went missing for most of our meal. Manager had to bring our check.
Waitress was not attentive. Ordered the tomahawk steak medium came out rare. When they brought it back out it was still semi rare. Steak had ZERO flavor I took two bites and stopped. Waitress came over noticed we didn’t even eat the steak but never asked us something wrong? Did it come back out ok? Nope not a word except here is your bill. It has high reviews not sure if people in DC just don’t know what good steak should taste like or they might of had a off night.
Met up with my mom to celebrate our belated birthdays. We couldn’t celebrate them at the right time so tonight was the night! The food was amazing. The waitress was nice but the service seemed slow. The overall experience was amazing!
Very nice steak. Great selection of wines. Even the salad was super delicious. The service was excellent.
Perfect spot for Thanksgiving with a large group. You can order the prefixed menu or off the regular menu. Service was great.
The place was great, the food fantastic and our servers were spot on.
Excellent steakhouse with some different options - like just the rib cap - my favorite part of the cut. The sommelier is personable and and helpful. A lovely evening.
