Rare Steakhouse - Washington DC

Overall experience was disappointing for a restaurant that has so much promise. It simply is not competitive with the other high end steak houses in DC. First the Caesar salad greens were wilted, and when we brought it to the attention to our server, she simply took it off the bill without asking if we wanted a replacement (probably part of a larger mix) or even seemed concerned we were unhappy. Second, the porterhouse for two was undercooked, but again, no one checked to see if we like the temperature. Needless to say, we left most of it at the restaurant. Again, we were hoping this would provide some solid competition to Del Frisco's, but it didn't deliver last night. Will I go again? Maybe, especially if someone else is buying. This might have been an off night for them.
Very disappointed... high end steakhouse should be an experience but it was impressive how mediocre the whole experience was. Bread was just ok... we had the BLT salad and the lettuce was wilted, the Caesar was fine. My wife and I (and son - he’s 4) shared the $145 dry aged prime porterhouse - I’ve had these other places and it’s usually fantastic (as it should be...). First off we ordered it medium but when it was brought to the table (rather hastily...) nobody asked if it was done to our temperature - it’s a $145 steak!! and nobody even cared if it was done correctly (it was medium well...) further it didn’t taste Prime to boot. The sides were fine but unmemorable. We decided to skip dessert but the did give us small cupcakes as an after dinner thank you - they weren’t good either. On top of everything else, nobody checked on us to see if we liked everything - just another customer from entry to exit. Felt like they were going through the motions the whole time.
I was very excited to dine at Rare for Valentine’s Day. However, this quickly went downhill upon arrival. Our reservation was set at 9:30p and we were not seated until 9:55p and it was after I asked the host staff again when we would be seated. We then noticed that unlike most of the people seated in the dining room, the staff never offered to check our coats. We also noticed that we were seated in a particular part of thr restaurant where everyone near by was the same ethnicity, which surprising in a very diverse city and restaurant. The food was good, however the temperature of the food was lower than expected which felt like it was waiting. Our waiter was great and very well informed which did make the experience better. My boyfriend spent a substantial amount of money in this establishment and we feel that we could have gotten a better value and service experience at a national chain. With both of being from the Midwest, we had very high expectations especially with the other locations being in Wisconsin. The elements of a great restaurant are within Rare, however the experience last night did not feel up to par.
Great experience. Food was off the charts. Everything was perfect besides our waitress trying to tell me how to order my steak.
The service was exceptional as was the food. Ordered the tomahawk steak medium, it came very rare, but I should have guessed it would from the name. Ambiance was great, and again, great staff.
Rare has a great setting with a old school mobster feel to it. The food was exceptional and the cocktails we had were well crafted. I'll definitely will be coming back!
I've had better steak at Waffle House. The knife provide barley cut through the gristle. Terrible. For the price, I should not have to send it back. Very disappointing
Poor food quality. Salad was below average. Steak was under cooked, cold center. Side dishes were below average. Martini’s were good. Poor food presentation. Waiter was pleasant and attentive. Ambiance was nice. Wouldn’t go back. Sorry.
Early Valentines with my husband!
A very good experience. Wonderful food. I’ll come back.
Excellent steaks!! Outstanding services!!
The food was SO tasty, the service was great, and we had such a lovely evening! Would definitely recommend.
Went specifically for the bone marrow. Overall wonderful food and selection. Service was A+
This restaurant has it all: a nice ambiance on the second floor where the fine dining room is located, an extensive wine list, delicious food, and excellent service. I took my parents here last Friday night and they were thoroughly impressed. We enjoyed a BLT salad, half dozen oysters, a Tomahawk ribeye steak (aged over 45 days or so), creamed spinach and truffle gnocchi. It was an impressive spread made with fresh ingredients and all incredibly tasty. The garlic-Parmesan popover bread served at the beginning of the meal was also quite delicious! With a view of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and spacious seating that ensured that the restaurant would not be too noisy/so you wouldn't overhear other tables' conversations, this restaurant is a five star powerhouse for certain! I can't wait to come again for a celebration or another nice occasion.
Great atmosphere and great food. Perfect for a date night and amazing happy hour
The $50.00 Open Table Reward Card was declined (I called the number on the card and it said they would get back to me in 48 hours - opentable rewards are a scam - they never work and they have ZERO customer service - I never received a call back)
Birthday diner in a private room!
We arrived earlier than our reserved time and they had no problem accommodating us. Since we arrived earlier we wanted to enjoy a relaxed spaced out dinner which they executed perfectly. They were appropriately attentive and the food was delicious!
It was a great meal but the waiter was not very friendly and seemed very distracted. We had to ask for bread service because we saw all the other tables with delicious bread but we never received it. The waiter seemed annoyed that we asked.
Food was good. Definitely could have had a truffle gnocchi on my own.
The service was among the best I have received in DC and the food was excellent. We dined on a dead Sunday night, so the high marks for noise level may not be typical. The sommelier made great wine recommendations and was very friendly.
Giovanni our waiter, was knowledgeable, poised and a pleasure
The food was outstanding! We frequent many steakhouses throughout the region, and found the seasoning and preparation of the steaks to be excellent. The service was a bit slow in the beginning as our dinner lasted over four hours, but we were a party of eight in a celebratory mood, so it was fine. There was no pressure to vacate our table and our whole table enjoyed the experience.
Ahhh what do you say to rave about the best steak in dc. Perfectly cooked, flavorful without being awash in butter or sauce. Friendly waiter and a decent bottle of wine under $100
Expensive, but worth every bite.
We sat at the bar. Our bartender was delightful and he made an amazing Old Fashion drink. Our food was delicious. We ordered the Filet and lobster. Both were delicious but would have preferred the lobster have been served hot, not cold.
Wow, Rare Steakhouse is amazing! From the moment you walk-in, you are excited for your meal and service. The food was delightful down to every morsel. I will be back again!
Also, when I made this reservation I noted that this was for a birthday celebration. As a result, the hostess to the waiter made sure that everything was perfect for the celebration.
Great service. Enjoyed thoroughly
It was our first time dining at Rare. We throughly enjoyed everything about our experience. The personal touch with the menu. The server was very patient and explained menu items and answered our questions. I would gladly recommend Rare to others. And I will return.
I have been to many great steakhouses all over the Country. This was our first time at Rare and it was frankly the best overall experience to date. Parking was easy, the hostess was very charming and our waiter was nothing less than exceptional. We tried everything from the steak and tuna tartare and octopus to start and we enjoyed several great cuts of steak. For the foodie in you, there is no better ppace
Have the business class pre-fixe. It's amazing
Steak was really delicious, but the duck was not that soft and tasty, anyway the restaurant didn’t charged us for the duck. Atmosphere very nice,
Wonderful place fabulous food incredible prices
Great food, great service, very knowledgeable sommelier. Couldn’t be happier with the experience. Will return.
New Years diner was great. Even though I had a 8:15 reservation as was asked to wait 30 minutes. Could have earned 5 stars. A comped drink was give for the inconvenience. The food was outstanding and the service was stellar.
We came to celebrate New Year’s Eve. We had a reservation for 8:15 and waited 45mjn until we were seated because they were “running behind”. Even with a reservation we waited just as long as the walk-in parties. When we finally were seated our waitress so not attentive at all. She started telling us about the menu and then just stopped abruptly and just walked away completely. When she came back she didn’t even mention it or apologize just asked if we were ready to order. We finally ordered and our food took 45 min to arrive. When it finally arrive it was just OK. My steak was subpar and not very flavorful. Overall the meal was just okay but the service made the whole experience worse. It was honestly super disappointing because we were really looking forward to the meal.
Went for NYE. Took about 40 minutes to get our table, but discovered the cheese bar as a result. Once at our table, our server was attentive and knowledgeable, and the food was delicious. We were particularly impressed with the Wagyu our server recommended as a starter, the rib cap, and the mashed potatoes. The only minuses were:
- my husband was overcharged on a rail drink using cheap liquor ($17 for Jim Beam?), and the explanation we were given was rather confusing.
- after waiting 40 minutes for a table, we were sat by the kitchen door
I would also note that the downstairs restaurant is more sophisticated in style than the upstairs, so if there is a way to request sitting downstairs, that would be best. In addition, the restaurant is downstairs. While there is an elevator, if you have mobility issues or are dining with those you do, they should make accommodations for that (as this was our first time dining at Rare, I am not sure whether they do).
Long story short: great food, some confusing management/design elements.
From being greeted at the door to paying the check, our experience was nothing less than excellent! All of the service personnel were pleasant and prompt. Because it was our anniversary, special menus were prepared for us!The food was impeccably prepared and delicious. This is one of the best restaurants that I have visited in DC. I will definitely recommend Rare as the place to visit for a fine meal. Thanks Rare!!
The service was amazing. The staff was very attentive, the steak and bread they bring out was great, but the sides were just ok.
From the reception till the end the service and all the details were excelent. Very confortable ambient and service. The go to place for any special occasion. Thanks we all enjoy our time there and the food the most...!!!
Our party of 6 had a great dining experience. The service was excellent and the food was awesome.
