Travel for work and our team will go to a team dinner every event. Glad we found this place!
Everything was exactly what I was looking for in a fine restaurant. Great food! Great service from all of the staff! Between the four of us we sampled steaks, branzino, spinach, broccolini, mashed potatoes and mushrooms which were all terrific! The sourdough rolls were an unexpected delicious surprise! An evening of dining at Rare Steakhouse is truly an evening to savor!
The food was cooked perfectly, everyone’s dishes came out together. Great steak and sides. Service was very attentive. But it was quite casual for the price point. Don’t think I’d spend that much again.
Both food and service was great. our server was excellent.
Restaurant didn’t acknowledge or do anything for celebration. Why make a point of saying it in the reservation if you’re not going to do anything with it.
We are frequently visited on special occasions and take that vote of confidence seriously. I'm going to send you my contact info so hopefully we can find out what went wrong and fix it. I am sorry we missed the mark when you were in, and appreciate the time you took to let us know. While we found no reservations denoting a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, etc) for when you were in, any comment made - to a host, captain, mgr, etc - should have been sufficient. We are very pleased for a first-time experience there everybody was very professional service was fantastic food was better than I've had before quality of steaks or over the top the wine that The connoisseur selected for us was perfect spot on if we are ever back in town that would be the first place we go and the last place we go before we leave. I would definitely recommend this place for any first time goers. You will want to go back again and again special events date night whatever that was the best experience we have ever had that we have traveled for many many years
22 oz bone-in Ribeye highly recommended! Add the mashed potatoes and the gnocchi as sides and you have a perfect meal
Let me start out saying the steak was excellent. That part of the restaurant didn't disappoint. The Cesar salad's dressing was tasted too much like anchovy, so I didn't like that.
The service was less than ideal for a high-end steakhouse. We were one of 3 tables seated upstairs so I assumed the service would be impeccable. Though our waitress was nice, she was inattentive. She asked us what we wanted to drink, and we stated water to begin. Less than 10 seconds later, she came with the water and asked if we decided - not nearly enough time to look at the wine list. She came back 10 minutes later to get our wine order. After receiving our main dishes, she stopped by infrequently. When we finished our glass of wine, she just took our wine glasses without even asking if we wanted another glass, which we were prepared to have. The wine we drinking is not cheap, and if I was the waitstaff, I would've been pushing the wine - or at a minimum asking if we wanted another glass. We decided to not ask for another glass since she took our glasses from the table. With regards to the food, we ordered truffled gnocchi to share. We finished about 2/3 of it. Though we were visiting and didn't have a place to store it, she didn't even ask if we were finished with it or if we wanted it to go. She just cleared it when she cleared our steak plates. She should've at least asked. And then finally, I gave her my card to pay for it, and she returns the bill without my card, and charged my card $9 more than the bill. She corrected it, but how can so many things go wrong with only 3 tables? I hope the service gets better or Rare won't have a chance to survive with all of the other competing steakhouses in DC.
My second visit and my spouse’s first. Reservations for a early Friday evening on a holiday weekend. Greeted and seated quickly. Excellent service by all but especially Sam our waiter. Extra special attention from Drew. We did not have steak even given the strong heavy on beef menu. My wife had fish while I had duck. Both very nicely prepared and presented. The vegetable sides were excellent.
Everything was better than expected. Nothing was just regular. Great wine list too! Looking forward to my return visit!
The meat was very good and so the majority of the plates. Chef is obsessed with peruvian ingredients and he manages pretty well. Thy tryed to give escargots a twist and did not work at all. To our advantage the sommelier (if he is a sommelier) made a mistake and opened a much better bottle of wine.

Our party of 13 had a fabulous time with the ambiance, quality and portions of the food and excellent service of the waitstaff. Brittany our lead server, was phenomenal.
First floor was a bit too loud, due to a company gathering upstairs and large group was in the bar. My only complaint was the Branzino was grilled and was in a sauce of some type that was very sweet and overpowered the fish.
Amazing food and service! Expensive but took my dad there for fathers day and it did not disappoint!

The pork tasting appetizer is a "use the whole hog" flight experience, and was fun and new to me.
I had the Bone-In NY Strip and it was done perfectly and had excellent taste. Make sure to check with waiter on what their done-ness levels mean. Their reference is a little rarer than I would normally go, so I was glad to get a description before settling on medium.
Got the scallops to make it surf & turf and they were a nice complement.
"Horseradish potatoes" may sound ordinary, but they're a terrific fried, mouth-watering side.
The pot-du-creme dessert was good, though I could have used a better, and stronger chocolate flavor in the custard (a bit of a chocolate snob) rather than be accompanied by choc-chips
Overall excellent fine dining experience, take your time and enjoy.
excellent pre fixe lunch special with decent sized steak and very good soup or salad choice. restaurant is dark and cool on a summer day and staff is excellent. great place for lunch
To start with, RARE saved a date night that was going HORRIBLY WRONG. We started the night at McCormick and Schmidt’s two blocks over and everything about that place was awful. All the way to we had to basically beg for a check so we could find somewhere else to go before everywhere shut down. It was already 8:30 and it was a Tuesday night, so we knew we needed to move fast. We came across RARE and decided to dine there. As soon as we walked into the restaurant our minds were blown. The staff took COMPLETE CARE of us from beginning until the end. It wasn’t just one person taking care of us though, it was the hostess, server, assistant manager, and the GM. The GM really takes care of the customers and definitely can say the same for the staff. We briefly mentioned that Tuesday’s were our only days available to go out on a date, and we were definitely assured that we would always have our table available for those date nights.
For the price, the food and service don't deliver.
Absolutely amazing steaks, grilled octopus, and oysters. Service was great. Will definitely be back.
Rare was a classy restaurant with great service, but we were disappointed with our steak.
We started out with a mid-price range Barbaresco Italian wine, which we really enjoyed. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The bread roll, which looked like a cinnamon roll with Parmesan cheese piled on top, was fantastic.
We ordered the 50 ounce double bone-in chop for two. The presentation was impressive, with the chefs cutting portions of the meat off a large bone. However, we ordered it to be cooked medium, but it was medium-rare at the most. We didn’t say anything because I prefer medium-rare and my wife could eat the more cooked portions. Our server noticed after a few minutes that it definitely wasn’t prepared to medium (her words) and took it back to the kitchen to be “cooked up.” It came back medium-well to well-done. The other disappointing thing was that the amount of fat and sinew in the cut made many portions difficult to cut through. I understand the value of fat in adding flavor and texture to a good steak, but it seemed excessive, and the sinewy parts were impossible to cut through. What meat we could get to tasted very good, but all of this, in total, left us disappointed.
In all, we felt like Rare was a poor value for the cost versus what we received. I really wanted to like this restaurant, and we had high hopes before our steak came out based on the ambiance and service to that point. I wish we would have tried individual cuts of steak. Our server gave us a complimentary dessert to go, which was nice, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the fact that we left disappointed.

I'm thrilled one of our captains noticed you weren't enjoying the steak and tried to correct it. I'm less-than-thrilled that it didn't seem to fix the issue. We'd like to have you back in, on us.
What a wonderful place! Service is superb, quality of food is off the charts! They made our 10th anniversary a very special occasion indeed. The 18oz Delmonico with bone-in was one of the greatest steaks I have ever had. Perfectly rare, not too salty, not too spicy but perfection!
Service was great for our group of 5. This was our first time dining here and our waiter made excellent suggestions. We all had various cuts of steak and each were perfect. We ordered sides to share - mushrooms, corn, gnocchi and truffle fries. One word described them all.....Delectable!
our main server Bonnie from Napa, CA was fantastic! our son is a retired butcher and she was able to arrange to have him meet your butcher on sight to see the "AGED" meat cooler. Bonnie took excellent care of us and we'll be back on our next visit to DC.
Amazing dinner! Everything we ate was absolutely delicious. Great service, great atmosphere, excellent food. We will be back!
A big hankering for a steak took my fiance and I to Rare for an early dinner. A quick Lyft to get there and we walked right in (5:30).
Ordered 2 ribeye (bone in) steaks (one prime - medium ($65), one grass fed local - medium rare ($75)), a couple sides, and one glass of inexpensive wine.
The early dinner rolls were great (cinnamon roll style piled high with nice parm)
- the grass fed local was really not great (too firm, not much flavor at all). And they struggled to get the temperature right. With the texture of the meat, I can understand... had to send back once.
- dry aged prime was better, texturally, flavor and temperature.
Sides were simple sauteed spinach and fried Brussels... spinach was nice but the Brussels were oily and flavorless.
The service staff was solid and checked in often, covered my girl's food allergy well, the manager came by when the steak wasn't right the first time and checked on the reset. They also were good enough to comp the wine and one side for the wait which I appreciated.
I think the upstairs ambiance was very empty that early. If I were to go again, I'd probably stay downstairs for early service and up for late.
Including the comps and a decent tip for the waiter, who really worked to get it right, $200 ... Steakhouse prices with not the greatest experience.

Service was excellent, unfortunately that was the highlight. The prime dry aged ribeye was just ok, not nearly worth the price. No crust on the steak and the seasoning was bland. My wife’s lobster was terrible. Tough meat and it was covered in an overpowering tomato based “salsa” which ruined the lobster experience. The mashed potatoes tasted like it was from a box, and the spinach was bland and flavorless. I was celebrating my birthday and the server brought out a complimentary desert, which I found to be Kind and thoughtful. Overall, terrible overpriced food. Will never be back
We appreciate the feedback. It's obviously not what we want to hear, but it's good for us to hear it. It sounds like we missed a few things during your visit and I can't apologize enough. We pride ourselves on our strong marks on service AND food - clearly the latter went inexcusably lacking that night. If your looking for the extravagant steakhouse experience in a toned down setting a few blocks from the White House, then this is for you. Obviously expensive but the food is delicious
The maitre d was vey good, welcoming and understanding of special needs. The entire staff was friendly and efficient.
Enjoyed all the food, steak and sides.
Love the decor and atmosphere. Service was excellent and our server was extremely helpful in helping us pick the perfect steak and sides. Compared to other steakhouses, I did feel it was a bit overpriced (but just a bit).
Least favorite thing I had was the pork tasting menu (wouldn’t recommend it) but I will say you should make room for the cinnamon roll as dessert, it’s AMAZING!
The food was awful. My steak was extremely fatty and the waitress forgot part of our order so we didn’t get that part until we had finished eating. Awful service food and presentation
Steak was nice and well prepared. Brussels sprouts were so salty they were inedible. Bernaise was also way too salty.
Ambiance was nice, but spoiled by 2 televisions.

What a wonderful steakhouse. Service was perfect and the food amazing. Every steak was perfectly cooked. The rolls OMG as close to perfection as bread can get. After having that, it was a no brainer to have the cinnamon roll for dessert. There was a large party (75) upstairs. Those of us downstairs would never know it, food came out swiftly and perfectly prepared. Our waiter was very helpful and truly knew all aspects of the menu. Wish there was a Rare in Los Angeles.
Steak, EXCELLENT... however, multiple dishes were average to poor. Local resident in the city and felt / treated as if we were just tourists.
Only 4 tables seated, large dining, felt empty and cold.

We take great pride in our steaks - and we're glad that came through - but we typically also earn high marks for our attention to sides and seafood, too. Steak was quite tough. Most of our table left ~ 50% of their food on the table.
Small classy place, very nice food and perfect servers with a lot of info about the food and a lot of energy.
Came in for a Pre-Mother’s Day Celebration dinner and this place did no disappoint . From the wine selection , appetizers and steaks everything was sublime even the additional sauces were amazing. Service was attentive and informative our server “Karen” was amazing and did everything to make us feel at home . Highly recommend this place for any occasion the food is bomb!
