Rare Steakhouse - Milwaukee
Complimenting our steaks and entrees is a specialty cocktail list and an extensive wine list with everything from wines for a big celebration to a weekday dinner.
Rare Milwaukee is one of the top business lunch destinations, but if you're just looking for a drink after work, Rare offers discounted cocktails, wines and snacks at happy hour.
Service was fantastic. I had their "Perfect Manhattan" and it was very good. They start with bread popovers that were excellent--crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The lobster bisque is very good, similar to the bisque served at The Capitol Grille, not quite as good as Carnevor's. We had the beef fat fries and wild mushrooms as sides and they were very good, especially the mushrooms, which were sauteed in truffle butter.
The one food-related area of slight disappointment was my porterhouse. Inside it was cooked perfectly and tasted exactly as I would expect a dry-aged porterhouse to taste. (The steak was more on the medium side when I'd ordered medium rare, but it's really hard to perfectly hit the right amount of done-ness when it's cooked at 1800 degrees.) The problem was the outside crust. Portions of the outside were caramelized quite well, but the rest of the outside crust was dried-out. It had a tough and grainy exterior, different than I've ever experienced with a dry-aged porterhouse (or any steak for that matter).
My wife's bone-in filet was perfectly done and didn't have the outer crust problem my porterhouse had.
We were celebrating our anniversary and our server gave us complimentary champagne which we really appreciated. Really, the service alone made us want to come back and I'm certain we will. We also had desert; my wife had ice cream and I had lemon creme brulee, and they were both excellent.
1st time here, wanted to try somewhere new for our anniversary and came highly recommended and glad we came! Top notch steak and service as Eric our waiter guided us through the menu and their steaks. While their specialty is dry aged steaks, we went with the standard 8oz filet (our favorite) to have a comparison to other steakhouses in town. It was excellent, cooked to perfection and delicious, especially with the blue cheese mornay sauce on the side. We also ordered the crab cake as an app, was best I've had outside of Maryland but chef is from Baltimore so that makes sense. Also had a Caesar salad (standard) and my wife tried the wedge, delicious (especially the smoked onions, what flavor!). Perfectly grilled asparagus as a side with the loaded hash browns (would have made a great breakfast dish lol) and we were stuffed. They offered a champagne toast and customer menus with Happy Anniversary printed on them; we don't drink so they gave us a slice of their flourless chocolate cake instead (wasn't a huge fan of that, maybe too full, but a friend said their creme brûlée was terrific). Will definitely be back to try some of their dry aged specialty cuts in the future!
Final note, lots of comments on here about how expensive it is, but their 8oz filet is 25% less than the other top steakhouses in town and right up there in quality. The appetizers and sides add up, sure, but this filet is the best value ounce for ounce, anywhere in town.
Steaks were undercooked. Medium rare was red not hot pink like in most restaurants.
Meal was not hot, it was room temperature.
Disappointing g to say the least
Service was amazing.
Lobster Bisque was great bit again not hot
Pork Nelly was also great
Deserts were also great
Chef/restaurant need to define cooking temps for steaks.
Undercooking made steaks chewy.
Food needs to be served Hot
Philip - You're absolutely right - there's no excuse for food that's not hot. I'm going to send you a note directly - I'd like to invite you back in so you can experience the RARE that so many people know and love...clearly we missed a few notes on your list visit and that's unacceptable to us. -drew
Went during downtown dining, good chance to try it and at a great value. My wife and I both had steaks and they were cooked to perfection. Loved the lobster bisque with nice size pieces of lobster, I've had it at other restaurants and it didn't even have lobster in it. As some thing different rather than having bread or rolls they served warm popovers, light and flavorful. For dessert she had the flourless chocolate cake and I the cream brulee, both very good. I had a Bushmills Black for a drink, $13, but it was filled to the top, talk about value. Most places you only get 1 shot. Lastly, the service was excellent, the decor was beautiful and impressive. We'll definitely go back and we highly recommend Rare for a great and enjoyable evening downtown.
Thrilled you enjoyed it - looking forward to having you back in to try the full menu soon! -drew
Downtown dining week options were fabulous. Cant wait to go back for lunch another time or dinner.
Everything was excellent.
Food and service excellent
Excellent food from the popovers to lobster bisque to the open faced beef sandwiches to the chocolate cake. Our waiter was outstanding in every way and paced the meal perfectly.
Rare Steakhouse is an amazing place to go to eat. The staff is friendly, the service is quick, the food is outstanding, and it’s overall a great experience! I love coming in to eat with my husband and family. Thank you Rare!
The lobster bisque and the crème brûlée are both outstanding.
Experience was great for my 1st visit. Plan on a second trip for dinner.
I think for downtown dining week, everything is way smaller portions, so not that great a value!
Went for lunch as it was Downtown Dining week and knew the price would be reasonable for good food. Well the only thing that really was outstanding were the popovers. Lobster bisque lacked seasoning. Ate some kind of short rib open faced sandwich that was just average with house potato chips. Dessert was lackluster as well. Glad I didn't go here for a fancy expensive dinner!
Thanks for the comments. We love the popovers, too; while they're a highlight of the meal, they shouldn't be the only highlight. It sounds like we missed the mark on the food when you were in - and I'm sorry about that. Downtown Dining is a chance for us to introduce people to our restaurant, our steak program and our service. Typically we earn high marks for these things. I will email you so we might discuss having you back in with the food on us so we can show you who we really are. -drew
We went for downtown dining. The lobster bisque and special roll were delicious. I had the beef and chips they were good. The dessert was very good too. Nice classy place with efficient and courteous wait staff
Went for downtown dining week, it was a great chance to experience what Rare has to offer at a more budget friendly cost.
Delicious food and great service makes for an ideal evening.
Fantastic food and service! The steak was amazing. We had the bottleneck steak and it was one of the best steaks I've ever eaten!
Went here during Downtown Dining week. Good food even though the steak was overcooked which was surprising since this is a steakhouse. Service was good but switching out sides was a cost upgrade even though they were the same prices on the menu. Very nice to give a champagne toast for my birthday though! Event though it was a special occasion, probably wouldn't return because of prices being so crazy high!
Such a great place for a great steak. The filet was done exactly to my specifications and we wish we could find that quality in store or meat market. Nothing like it! Crunchy asparagus and creamy mashed potatoes..accompanied the meat....yum.
Try their chocolate cake.. it had whipped cream and strawberry filling.. like a torte to die for.. light...
Our service from Raj was outstanding! We’ll definitely be coming back. The value for downtown dining week was superb.
Tanner was a great and friendly server and the food and wine were great.
Excellent meal from start to finish. Food and service were stellar. I would definitely recommend Rare for a night out.
I had not realized that it was restaurant week. I was surprised to see people at dinner with ball caps and shorts/sandals. I’m uncertain if this is normal for Rare or if it was due to the restaurant week specials. If this is the norm, my opinions may change slightly.
(I did not try the discounted specials and ordered the regular menu)
The atmosphere is dingy. The mood is somber at best. The waitress was very young and inexperienced. During her greeting, she thought she recognized me. After softly dismissing the question, she came back to the table multiple times to ask if I knew her from other times and locations. It made us feel uncomfortable and awkward each time she reapproached the table suggesting that she knew she knew me. It was very unprofessional. The lunch menu appeared to be set up so that no chef was needed and the server could prepare what was offered. The lobster bisque was lukewarm and doesn't even compare to St. Paul Fish Company's bisque for 5 dollars. The knife and fork brisket was served on rubbery cold texas toast topped with two spoonfuls of ( SOS, on a shingle), an awful lukewarm pulled beef. The chicken breast sandwich was boiled, cold and flavorless. The creme brulee was a melted goop of what tasted like instant pudding, and the other dessert was so bad that I can't even tell you what it was supposed to be. My lunch bill for four people drinking water was almost 70 dollars, and it would have cost almost a hundred more if it weren't for the dine-in Milwaukee week pricing. My Mom got sick in the restaurant and we had to urgently leave... no manager came by, and I had to seek out the server to close the check. We left big portions of our lunches on our plates which should have generated curiosity from the absent manager. Unfortunately, two other members of my party became sick later that afternoon. They have really come downhill since they first opened. I am shocked they are still in business. I have worked many years in the industry and you can spend a fraction of the cost of this place to receive better service, enjoy a better atmosphere, and eat food prepared by an actual chef and not scooped on to a plate by your server. I felt and still feel very ashamed and guilty for bringing my loved ones here.... it will take them some time to forgive me.
Whether good or bad, we take feedback seriously. We are pleased that your first meal at RARE was good enough to warrant a return visit. We served nearly 2,000 guests during Downtown Dining this year and are proud of the high scores we earned during that period; yours is the only one that claimed to have been ill during your visit. Clearly something went amiss at your table - and for that we apologize. Given the tone of your comments we decided to refund your meal instead of inviting you back.
I have eaten at Rare Steakhouse in Madison and Milwaukee. Both of them are very good to excellent. The service has been excellent and attentive.
The interior design is not my favorite. It is dark with chandeliers and nice banquettes. Going to either of them makes me feel like I am in a Republican lobbyists restaurant. Only negative I really have. My preference is for brighter, more contemporary space.
Son’s 21st Birthday!
I dined at Rare during Downtown Dining Week for lunch. I had the Chicken sandwich which is probably not a good selection to rate a Steakhouse on! The sandwich was very good however. We also had the Lobster Bisque soup with the Popover that is served instead of bread. Both were excellent. We chose the Chocolate Cake with Strawberry drizzle for dessert and found it to be quite dry.
Very poor menu for downtown dining. Subpar entrees - two sandwiches. Both very cheaply done and poor quality. I do not plan to return. I understand not wanting to go nuts for restaurant week, but the food should not deter people from returning. You want to entice them to come back for regular dining!
MKEFoodie - We couldn't agree more and we appreciate the frank feedback. We look at Downtown dining as a way to introduce new people to RARE that maybe haven't been in yet. As a result, we always try and put our best foot forward and we're proud of the generally high marks we earn during this week (and the rest of the year). It sounds like we may have missed the mark on your visit and I apologize for that. We'll circle back and see how we can improve. Thanks, again, for the note. -drew
It was a nice downtown dining experience. I had dinner there once and that was much better.
Heard that RARE was offering half-priced bottles of wine on Friday's nights - so decided to venture back a year after having a no so great experience. Given their selection, the wine offer is definitely a great value. Service was friendly enough and efficient - food was very good - served hot - no issues ...
Amazing dinner! Our server was fantastic, so knowledgeable and helpful with recommendations
Food was amazing! Friendly service. Perfect for a romantic night out.
My husband and I went to Rare for our anniversary. They printed special menus just for our special occasion, which was a nice touch. The food is absolutely amazing, best steak I've ever had! They know what they're doing. We had an excellent waiter, he was very knowledgeable and gave us recommendations. Only small criticism is he came to our table a little too often. I'm glad we were always taken care of, but I would have preferred a little more privacy. Rare did comp our dessert for our anniversary though, which was very nice. Overall, excellent food, excellent service and lovely atmosphere. Would go again and again.
Our first visit since new ownership. The wine list was much better and smaller than our last visit. Our waitress, Charity, was one of the best waitresses I have had, anywhere, in a long time. Our dining friends thought the same. Three of us ordered steaks. Two were ordered rare plus and one medium rare. All of them were done to the next level. (rare plus was medium rare and medium rare was medium) Our popovers were cold in the middle . The menu on their web site doesn't match the actual menu. One of our dining partners was using a walker after an accident and the host and hostess were terrific about storing it and making sure our table worked for him. The valet also was exceptionally helpful with our friend.
My first time here hosting a business dinner. Excellent food and service. Dry aged ribeye was outstanding.
All of the steaks were prepared perfectly to our order. Delicious cocktails and the bananas foster was sooooo good! Our server, Katie, was so sweet and provided wonderful descriptions of the menu selections!
Beautiful place. Liked the happy hour prices at the bar. Great steak.
This was our first time there, we came to celebrate my fiance's bday. We had a great time, the food was good and our waiter Peter Bressert was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and professional. We will be back.
I came at a weird time. Technically they were open, but they weren’t sure what to do with me. I ate at the bar. The steak has a strong brandy tarragon au jus that was overly salted. Not a necessary component of the dish. Would’ve been better without the au jus.
We went with friends, met early for drinks in the bar before dinner. Great selection of beers and bourbons. We then moved to our table and we were very impressed with the waitstaff. Nice people. Excellent food. Terrific wine list. Will definitely eat at Rare again.
