Absolutely wonderful service. I apologize for not remembering the lovely woman's name, but she was engaging and helpful. A wonderful contribution to great food.
Birthday dinner for my daughter. One of her favorite restaurants, and did not disappoint.
Very enjoyable. Great service. Nice atmosphere.
2nd time we have been there. It was my husband's birthday. Food was very good overall, best salad ever, great cauliflower soup, but my husband's fish dinner was overcooked. I think it was mahi, trying to remember. This part was disappointing. Everything else was excellent. But really, with the prices, food needs to be all around excellent! I think the overcooked fish was the monkfish!
Rappahannock is one of the finest farm to table restaurants we have visited in Virginia, and what sets it utterly apart is the Ocean to Table seafood. There are several Rappahannock Oyster Company restaurants, and we dined at the Richmond location for the second time on a recent visit to Richmond VA. We shared a wonderful salad made with local apples, local greens, a deliciously unctuous cheese, and a vinaigrette made in house with preserved lemons, made in house and deliciously piquant. We shared a dozen oysters, of course. My husband devoured a whole branzino, roasted to tender perfection, and I ate grilled monkfish, both of them utterly delicious. We shared a glass of Albarino, a delicious white from Galicia, Spain, which complemented the seafood perfectly. The service was knowledgable, hospitable, and just the right amount of friendly. The ambiance is cheerful without being boisterous on a busy Saturday evening, and we were delighted with the whole experience, which included a friendly visit from the manager. Rappahannock will be a feature of future visits to Richmond, and we'll bring friends!
Went to celebrate my Mother's birthday. It was the first time she and my father ate at Rappahanock. We went early as I had my 2 year old son. The staff was fantastic and attentive. The bartenders can make even the most obscure drink. Truly a delight. The scallops are always divine. I ordered the monkfish and it was tasty. Dad ordered the paella and that was just ok. There was a weird mayo aioli on top that felt heavy and out of place. Next time, I'd recommend leaving that off. Did I mention my 2 year old? He had a grilled ham and cheese hold the ham and ate most if it.
Great time was had by all.
Fabulous once again! Superb food and drink, stellar service
As usual thr food was amazing and thr vibe was cool. Another fantastic meal here.
We make an annual stop here on our way south for vacation and if anything it just keeps getting better. My wife and I arrived early so we got a dozen oysters at the bar ( as always an excellent mix of local and northern). The bartender was so engaging that we decided to just stay there for dinner instead of moving to a table. The restaurant has a cool modern vibe and as an older couple who frequents the restaurants of New York and Philadelphia we can tell you this chef can really cook. Far be it from me to order lamb at such a great seafood restaurant..but I did just that as the bartender explained the special quality of the locally raised product. It was outstanding...and as always with this chef the side was fantastic. No simple side of rice or asparagus or whatever..he gives you an orchestra of flavor. My wife had a fish special with a spectacular kumquat glaze. This restaurant is simply a 10.
Food was very good. Service was excellent.
Food is good, but I wish they would have something new. We have been to this place regularly for a number of years, but it seems the menu does not change a lot over the years. I like it but wish something new.
Food was excellent but the service HORRIBLE. The waitress filled our cups with water 20 minutes after we sat down without saying a word then ignored us for another 30 minutes. She mumbled something about “mixed communications” but barely paid us any attention the rest of our time there. Sadly for this restaurant, the incredible food didn’t compensate for the incompetent service we received.
It took over 25 minutes from the time we ordered drinks to the time they arrived. It took another 25 minutes for our appetizer to arrive. The entire meal took 2 1/2 hours, and while we were not in a hurry, the long gaps between each course left us feeling frustrated and cranky. I don’t fault the waitress as much as I fault the bar and kitchen. We won’t return, especially with so many other fine dining experiences to be enjoyed nearby.
we arrived earlier than our reservation, but they made us sit at the bar for 15 minutes even though our table had not been in use when we arrived. This was the only negative.
First timers. Great meal, cool vibe and not too noisy. Definitely coming back.
Very upbeat restaurant. They food was wonderful. The service was above and beyond. I went there for a birthday meal with my mother and the waiter really helped to make it a
memorable evening.
Our first experience at Rappahannock was a winner!
The service was fast and very knowledgeable about both the food and drinks on the menu. The food was excellent...I recommend trying the wood-grilled monkfish! The downtown location allows access to those driving and walking...and is a great place to watch the people go by. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a "new spot."
The food was amazing! My wife was ready to rank this among the best restaurants we’ve eaten at. I’m not sure I’m ready to commit to that level of good, but I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Took my sister for a girls lunch. Enjoyed a table by the window for people watching. Oyster sampler with salmon Xavier and blood orange mignonette was divine. We both got the tuna salad - fresh salad with interesting ingredients (pickled carrots!) and a very light ginger vinaigrette topped with a perfectly cooked piece of fresh tuna. Enjoyed every bite.
Always a treat!! Service and food are excellent. And the best oysters-both selection and quality-anywhere. Can’t wait to go back!
Food and Service was great! Menu was very over priced for amount of food you received. Also, the restaurant was not rated properly in terms of expensiveness on OpenTable. It was much more expensive than expected or rated. Otherwise, food quality was amazing and service was outstanding!
I wanted a good seafood meal. Portions small, my husband and I left hungry, bottle of wine appetizer $160, too much for a meal that was not enjoyable.
Very. Good.
The food was good not great. I have been here several times and this was the first time I thought it was overpriced for what we had- especially the wine. Most bottles of red were between $65 and $100. I find that ridiculous for the type of restaurant it is. Dinner for 4 was over $350- with shared apps and no dessert or coffee. :(
My wife and I were attending a real estate conference and had the opportunity to eat here. Great drinks and excellent food. Reasonably priced as well!
While visiting Richmond we wanted to eat at a raw oyster bar. The Rappahannock was one of the restaurants listed on TripAdvisor. We went into the bar/restaurant and immediately saw people sitting at the bar with an abundance of raw oysters in front of them. We decided to sit at the bar. Immediately, One of the bar tenders waited on us . Luke, our bartender/waiter was gracious and knowledgeable. Luckily for us, we happened to be there during “happy hour”, oysters and drinks were cheaper. The oysters recommended to us were delicious. Luke also recommended wine for me and an IPA for my S.O. He also recommended Ceviche that was fresh and also delicious. For our main course, I chose Paella. It was different then the typical Spanish Paella. It was tasty, but for me, I prefer the traditional Spanish paella. I highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy a raw bar and seafood. If back in Richmond, We will definitely return.
Great fun place!!
This was my second time at Rappaahannock, although my first actually sitting down and eating properly. I love the space; its modern without being too much so. The service was really outstanding- our server went out of the way to get our order in before a mega-table seated next to us. But the food was meh - small portions and expensive prices.
great food, overpriced for size to portions.
Our Server Jason was super! Very thorough in explaining the menu and very courteous and friendly!!! The food was very delicious!!!
The food was FANTASTIC as always but the grill from the kitchen made the restaurant smoky. I could smell it in my hair and clothes when I left.
The food was good. I had the scallops that were yummy but the dish was just okay. The wine was good, but there was an intense amount of sediment in the bottom of my glass which was unpleasant.
Another good night at Rappahannock. We started out with the Oysters and Pearls. That was a hit with both of us. The sweetness of the orange and the salty goodness of the trout caviar were beautifully paired with the oysters. Once again, I got a dish I would not make at home. While I would make the pan seared Rockfish, I would not have begun to have made the side dish. It was delightful and earthy, showing beautiful contrast to the rockfish. She had wood grilled monk fish. It too was perfectly cooked and well prepared. 2 glasses of cava, bread, and a serving of Gelati Celeste, about $150 with tip. Completely fair for a night at the Symphony.
Smokey. Delicious though. Service was only fair
We were in the Richmond area and this was our first choice for dinner. We were not disappointed. My husband is a great fan of oysters and said his selection of three different local oysters was excellent. Every aspect of this dinner was outstanding from cocktails to dessert.
I really like the food but it’s been so difficult to eat here the past few times and this time could not enjoy the meal because my eyes were watery and burning due to the smoke. I don’t think I can go back until the air clears up. I want to be able to enjoy a meal without eyes irritated. It’s too bad I won’t be back anytime soon.
Outstanding service and delicious seafood paella. I plan to return often!
I was disappointed. I got oysters and a salad. My wife got the scallops. The scallops were of good size and had good flavor but they were way over priced for just (4). The salad was small and not much to it for the cost. The oysters were so small (1"x 0.5" to a large of 1.25"x0.5") for the price I would recommend they look at getting their oysters from Barham's Seafood his oysters are huge (2" to 2.5"x1"). The ambiance was the setting of a pub no exclusive seating. I will not be recommending this place to any friends or family.
Way too expensive for the amount of food brought to the table. A $30 entree should be considerably more than the size of an appetizer. Charging $5 for bread is ludicrous as well. I will not dine in your establishment again.
This restaurant always has excellent waiters. On a week night the noise level is not bad, but on the weekend it is better to have a table for two, so that you can get your heads together to talk. A conversation with several people at the table is difficult.
