Seafood
Travis and Ryan Croxton debut their spinoff from the highly acclaimed Rappahannock Oyster Bar at Union Market in Washington, DC. They’ve even brought their DC Chef, Kevin Kelly, to man the kitchen at this outpost. This location in the historic Cigar Factory Building on East Bay Street, allows room for Chef Kelly to showcase more of his cuisine to a larger audience, including an incredibly unique 40 seat raw bar. Oysters grown by the Croxton’s own Rappahannock Oyster Company are accentuated, but Kelly’s signature dishes like lambs’n’clams, crabcakes, shrimp & grits and the best po’ boy you’ll ever eat are enough reasons in their own right for constant visits. Coupled with a great cocktail program and focus on local ingredients, ROB is a great place for any occasion.

Mothers Day Lunch. This was our third visit. It was a great lunch with lots of oysters(grilled, steamed, on the half shell) along with the mussels and a crab cake special. All items and our waiter were great. We will be back.

We had a wonderful brunch! We sat outside in the shade and it was wonderful. Our server was very nice and knowledgable of the menu. The mussels were delicious and my sister's Shrimp and Grits were different but VERY good! Definitely recommend to others!

Oysters were delicious! Service was outstanding (thank you Preston!) It is quite loud when the bar area is full but was very pleasant after the happy hour crowd moved on. Their Richmond restaurant is outstanding also!

Delicious! We started with an oyster sampling, all excellent but salty were best. Baked clams were very flavorful, a must, we would order them again. Ceviche could have been cut slightly smaller but still quite good. Curried fish was sooo good! Server was quite knowledgeable and very efficient. We will be back.

We liked our experience but the overall loudness of the restaurant detracted from the dinner. The dining room would benefit from some acoustic revisions such as fabric panels on the ceiling to reduce noise. Small plates were pricey for the portions. We had smoked fish dip to share and were only given 5 crackers for the plate. Come on, saltine crackers are inexpensive so at least include enough of them on the plate to serve the dip portion. Entrees were inventive and the portions were appropriate. While I did not have an entrée, everyone at the table reported that they enjoyed their dinner. The air ducts were dripping condensation onto the floors and my date. The server attempted to wipe the ducts but the condensation returned. Overall the food was good but for the price point I would choose somewhere with a more tolerable noise level in the future.

We sat at the bar. Charles was our server and offered up great advice about the menu and food. We were there for happy hour. Amazing prices on oysters and drinks. We tried all 3 of their oysters and all were fresh and delicious. Also highly recommend their shrimp and grits. Unique preparation, great dish!

We had a dozen oysters each. The waiter selected samples of three different oysters and explained the difference when serving the dish. They included proper extras to add to the oysters such as pepper sauce and horseradish, all made fresh. We followed the oysters with their “Lamb and Clams” stew. It was fantastic. The service was great and the restaurant ambiance was a nice balance of upscale casual.

We were very disappointed in Rappahannock in Charleston, SC. We’ve been to other locations in Virginia and liked the food, however this location was a disappointment. The oysters did not taste fresh and we only got 11 instead of 12! The service was slow and not dependable!

There was no recognition of our 47th anniversary even though I noted it on the reservation. The oysters were the best part of the meal. My shrimp & grits were very bland and warm. I think I may go back for happy hour oysters.

We visited for Easter Brunch -- absolutely perfect choice. Oysters were incredible - well shucked -- meaning we didn't get shell w/ our oysters (a talent among shuckers !). We had 5-people in our party and everyone was incredibly happy with their meal. Portions were good -- save room for dessert though! Couple of logistics: they have a parking lot -- not sure how quickly it fills, but they do seem to have overflow. They have table seating as well as seating at the bar. If you like Bloody Mary's --go for the Bloody Mary bar -- quite the variety. Service was perfect - there when we needed them- but not overbearing. Wonderful visit -- plan to check out their location in Washington DC.

The restaurant has a great atmosphere - we were bummed that the food did not live up to the expectations. The Martini I ordered came in a tiny stemmed glass to wit a Martini should not be served in. The food looked great on the platter but the Paprika mussels were not up to par. The flavor was good but the texture was thick and meaty and had an odd mouthfeel that was not enjoyed. The Rappahannock oysters were the best on the platter and had a great flavor and texture. The Shrimp were overcooked and were rubbery. The service was the worst that I had - we sat in the bar and it took 20 minutes to get a drink. Our waitress was friendly but she was working the whole room alone it. The hostess was assisting in cleaning and delivering food, but it was still not working. We spent 2 hours there and only received our platter and 2 drinks in that time frame. We were not in a hurry and planned for a slow and easy night, but this was unacceptable. I would assume that we went on an "off" night, I would try this place one more time to be fair because every place has a bad night once in awhile

My friends and I shared a half dozen oysters, of which the Single Ladies were largest and tastiest, truly exceptional. We then shared an exquisite ceviche, which we only wished had been a bit more generous in quantity. Service was prompt, warm, impeccably thoughtful. My crab cake -- a special that evening -- was the finest I've ever had, in a long lifetime of always judging seafood establishments by the percentage of bread crumbs or other filler in their crab cakes. In this case, that percentage appeared to be zero. Large, tender chunks of mind-blowingly delicious crab were held together by sheer magic. And that crab cake was HUGE! It floated gorgeously on a bed of celery-root (aka celeriac) slaw, delicious in itself. Kudos to the chef/magician who created it. We will return soon and often, always hoping for that crab cake!

We chose to sit at the bar and we’re glad we did! The bartenders were friendly and welcoming. We had oysters, the charred octopus, beef tartare, raw bar ceviche, and scallops. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasted great! We try to get down to Charleston once a year and will definitely make another visit to Rappahannock.

Preston did a great job as our server. Foods we liked as is include the cocktails, the mussels in paprika oil, the grits and the smoked jalapeño butter. Foods we liked but would do differently include the shrimp on the shrimp & grits (Ditch the squid ink it serves no good purpose. It adds no flavor and only serves to hide what were most likely very nice looking shrimp), the $60 raw bar platter (we should have just gotten oysters for $1.25 each and had tons more oysters that way) and the moon pie (it was good but would have been much better served warm and only needs about half of the amount of cookie). Anyone who has ever eaten a warm moon pie knows how much better they are that way. Make the cookie parts thinner please.

After many positive previous dining experiences at Rappahannock, we were very disappointed in our experience recently. We dined at 5:30pm with no other diners in the entire dining area. After placing our order, we waited at least 45 minutes or more for our food to arrive at the table. We did not complain but felt the service and kitchen were lax. The manager and our server apologized for the delay in our food.
The dishes were prepared with unexpected spices making them relatively unappetizing. I would have expected this level of spice mix in an Indian or Middle Eastern restaurant, but not at a restaurant specializing in fish. The manager did comp us the cost of the bread flight due to the long wait for the food.
