Ralph's Italian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
My daughter & myself had dinner together before attending a concert. I have been to Ralphs before so I was prepared to sit on top of the other table next to us which is not comfortable but I understand as a business you need to utilize every inch of space. I have been to Ralphs throughout the years and I really feel that the food is not what it use to be. I felt this way the last two times I was there. I do know good Italian food being Italian myself and my dad owning a restaurant for 40 years. I ordered the Antipasto which I felt was downsized from previous times. My daughter had the ravioli I had the braciole with fettuccini which was ok the braciole was a little tough. I did ask my waiter for extra gravy which he did give me. He took my dish in the back and just added the gray that was on my daughters ravioli. As far as our service our waiter was not the happiest person I can't say he was ignorant but not someone who added to the experience of our dining. Unfortunately I feel as though when a business becomes successful like yours, the food and service becomes lax. Because of the prices your establishment does charge you are held at a higher standard and can not afford to not give it your all. Please take this review as constructive criticism .
We saw our server twice, when he introduced himself by saying “you guys ready yet” and when he delivered our food, that was it. We got more help from the buss boy the entire night. Me and my boyfriend go here a lot and tonight was the worst we’ve ever been treated by a waiter. Sad
I chose this place because I searched for “kid friendly” on opentable and this was one of the top choices in Philly.
The reviews seemed good enough to give it a try.
We were a party of 7 (5 adults, 1 toddler, 1 newborn).
Upon arrival, we had a baby in a car seat along with the diaper bag, etc. We were directed to climb the stairs after walking through an empty 1st floor dining room (arrived at 5pm). At the top of the stairs, we were told our table was given to someone else so now we had to stand and wait for them to decide which empty table to give us (it was 90% empty ).
The bathrooms are tiny and to be advertised as kid friendly, there is not a changing table in the building. I had to change a newborn baby’s diaper on the floor of the disgusting bathroom.
As for servers, we clearly grabbed the short straw tonight. We were approached (not greeted) by a young man that couldn’t have come off any less professional and rude. He treated us as if we were lucky to be sitting in his section.
We had the calamari and tomato/ mozzarella apps. The calamari was very tough and very fishy. This was being shared by several people and everyone agreed that it wasn’t edible. I flagged down the server and he removed the mostly untouched plate (although he later claimed it was 90% eaten and tried to charge for it).
The entrees at our table were mostly the veal and chicken parmigiana. Everyone was satisfied but agreed that it wasn’t anything special or better than the local pizzeria.
As for the bill, please make note they add 20% tip to the bill for 6 or more people. The problem is they add the tip to the bill amount with the taxes included meaning you’re tipping on the taxes as well. That is not appropriate tipping etiquette.
Ralph's is a tiny little restaurant in South Philly. It claims to be the oldest Italian restaurant in America. The food was authentic and so good. The tables are very close together, so if you're looking for intimacy, this is not the place. In addition, the wait staff is somewhat taciturn, so that a bit of a negative. Otherwise, go and eat some great Italian food. Mangia!
We love Ralph's. It's a landmark S.Philly gem that's the very best Italian Family style dining. Historic in Philly. I've been blessed to be married into a family that has celebrated many a special occasion at Ralph's over the past 39+ years.
There's a charm about this restaurant that is unlike any other, old world, no pretension. Classic dishes done simply and cleanly with such comfort to the soul. We love it there!!
We were visiting Philly and a friend had recommended Ralph’s. Overall we really enjoyed the old school vibe, the food was great and our waiter was excellent. My only complaint was that they seated us under the a/c vent and we were freezing. When we asked the person who seated us for a different table he was not at all accommodating even though there were plenty of tables available.
I don't usually write reviews nor do I care what others one time experience was. However as a first time visitor. I felt compelled to write. This place is really wonderful. The menu is extensive the wine menu is very reasonable. The food was greAt. Every course better than than the one before. Our wIter was funny and made us feel right at home The place was filled with happy diners as we talked to the people next to us They are regulars and confirmed to me that this place is a gem. I'm sorry we hadn't visited sooner. But we won't be strangers. Nice to find such a place that treats there customers like family after reading some reviews on here I don't u deist and such pettiness lol. U didn't get bread. Ask for it. Ralph's has become our go to place. For casual dining. Or memorable occasions. Kudos
Definitely a gem in Philadelphia! I didn't really see it from things to do website or on Google. Found out about the place from a friend and it is totally worth it. Ambiance and food is phenomenal. Definitely would come back and try more items on the menu. Servers are on point with recommendations.
However, our server was not on the mark. We were seated upstairs, perhaps that was part of it - but I don't think so. He cleared plates without asking if the diner was finished. In one case the plate was removed before my friend even had time to resist-and she was NOT finished. As well, our dessert sat on the tray for a very long time - he brought the tray up and then forgot to serve what was on it. He walked past it several times--I finally had to ask for it. I was tempted to just go get it!
We had a great meal and great bottle of wine for a resonable price. The two of us got out of there for just under 100 bucks which included a bottle of wine and desert. We had left overs which were perfect for a late night snack back at hotel.
Tables are fairly close together which is great for somebody like me who likes to talk to people.
In case you were wondering, yup got the veal parm. It was awesome. Also got fettuccini Alfredo. Not bad. The home made noodles rocked.
Let’s talk desert..... I would NOT suggest the canoli. The filling was chalky. It was like eating a tumms. Do not waste your money on one of these things.
I will go back next time in Philly.
