Rails...a Cafe at the Depot
we go every Friday as end of week celebration. We love everything about this place and will continue visiting Friday evenings. Great food and service
Had the lunch special. Interesting and different menu My soup and sandwich were very good. Others in my party enjoyed theirs also. Dessert was awesome! Bailey's Chocolate Cake. We will be back!
Birthday dinner celebrated with pasta!!!
Love the character of this place. The food was outstanding - it was hard to decide what to have. Looking forward to our next visit.
The restaurant has character in that it is housed in a quaint historical building that was once a train depot. There was plenty of parking, and the place was easy to find. We are outdoor dining aficionados and the outdoor dining area is in a nicely shaded courtyard-like area. This is Texas, and it was hot outside, but the outdoor area was comfortable and shaded. They do have wrought-iron chairs that screech on the concrete when you move them and that can be quite annoying. The wait staff were courteous, friendly and attentive, and the food was very good, if not great. The wine list has a good number of selections and the prices will fit any budget. I enjoyed the Norwegian Salmon with green beans and wild rice. All in all, a nice experience, and we will return, even though we have to drive from the Boerne area to get there.
Went with high expectations from reading other reviews, left underwhelmed. The appetizer selection looked so good that we ordered three for dinner. Brussheta on cucumbers? Thyme instead of basil on caprese salad? Cool and wet shrimp? Can do better with more attention to the details.
Food was very good, ambience was great, server could have been a little friendlier, she must have been having a bad night.
Our daughter attends camp at Kickapoo. Eating at the Rails has become a tradition for us. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional! Can't wait to come back next year! Thank you!
The food was excellent and our waiter was so friendly! It happened to be my birthday and they were so sweet and gave us some cupcakes to celebrate. We also ordered dessert, which was excellent as well. The building is super cute with a nice outside seating area. We had just picked up our daughters who had been at camp for 2 weeks without a/c, so they begged to sit inside. But, the outside area looked very nice as well. We will definitely visit again!
Great Place, great service, really good food and the desserts were amazing!!! Everything wounderful :)
We've been dining there regularly once or twice weekly for the 12 years we've lived in Kerrville. Rails has only been here 15 years and one of their servers, Stephanie, has stayed with them all that time. All of their staff are well trained and as competent as those in better Houston restaurants where we lived for over 30 years. Their menu is balanced and satisfies all tastes as far as I am aware. John and Melissa, the owners, have maintained the antique city railroad depot character as well as two surrounding historic buildings (all some 100+ years old) as part of their restaurant. Rails is always at the top of our list for dependable fine dining.
As usual the food was spectacular. The specials are always good and most of our group of 8 had them. Dessert is a killer. Love the chocolate and blackberry cake. OMG. My only problem was the young man playing the guitar. The place is too small for that. I am hard of hearing and had to turn my hearing aids off. The food made up for that little inconvenience.
Food was amazing and our waitress was exceptional! We will definitely return!
Always good food and good service!!! Best restaurant in Kerrville by far!
Great local spot for lunch or dinner. First time at Rails for dinner. We will return. The selection of different cakes for dessert is fabulous! Eight the night we were there plus banana pudding, pie, creme brûlée and more.
They were really busy on the night we dined. Our steaks were a little overcooked and the owner could see that when she checked on us. She immediately rectified the situation and took them off the bill. Then after having our wonderful desserts, she did not charge us for those either. I have dined here quite a few times and am always satisfied with the service, friendliness of the staff and the quality of food. We will be back. The owner and our waitress Brandi were very nice, accommodating and professional. Many thanks to them.
Although we had to wait too long for our drinks, the rest of the service was excellent. the food ensured we will return. Cool place you have.
Great service, pasta with shrimp delicious and desserts are great too.
I would have given you five stars across-the-board but I feel a high-end restaurants such as rails should have a bar .
We enjoyed good food and superior service.
One does not normally find such great restaurants in a town of this size. We always choose this place when we wssnt special treatment. The Mahi Mahi tacos were outstanding with the spicy sauce.
The overall ambiance of the restaurant was very nice. Lots of people enjoying a nice summer evening. The menu is very broad - almost scary to think they could do all of this well. We liked the restaurant and would return again if we are in this area.
Great find while driving through on vacation! We had a very nice dinner on the patio under a large shade tree. Great food, great service, and great location (in a old train depot). Sometimes you find a hidden gem in the most unlikely places!
50th wedding anniversary
We sat outside because the weather was beautiful but it was a mistake because we could not keep the flies off of our food. There was no room to move inside. I ordered osso buco which is traditionally a slow cooked lamb shank and I got lamb chops.
Excellent dinner. Had stuffed flounder and wife had filet mignon. Flour less chocolate cake and Amaretto creme brulee for dessert. Food was delicious and wait staff was very helpful. Will go again next time I am in Kerrville.
Enjoyed the Spanish guitar music that accompanied dinner. Artist was Kevin McCormick.
Outstanding! A favorite place for special occasions. Never disappoint.
All aboard, this fine dining restaurant is housed in a former railroad station. The appetizers, salads, and entrees are beautifully presented and taste delicious. The desserts are numerous and tempting. The wine list is thoughtful and includes great selections not normally found in most establishments. The ambiance is engaging whether you dine indoors or outside. Finally, the wait staff is friendly and personable without infringing on your meal. Be sure to make this place your next stop in Kerrville!
Good, as always! A great dependable place to take friends and never be disappointed...
very nice, dinner was outstanding. plan to return soon.
Took my mom here for an early Mother’s Day lunch - it was very nice and the food was great.
We came for a office birthday celebrations so we're all on our lunch hour. Our group expanded to be larger than anticipated and our waitress flexed with it and did a superb job. Colleagues helped her serve the food to our group of 14 and we were able to get back to work on time. Well Done.
BEYOND AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! It's so rare these days to find a place with delicious food, decadent desserts, fine wines AND SERVICE TO MATCH!!!! Rails has nailed it! My family loved the experience and I can't say how grateful I am to have found this treasure!!
Highly recommend. Service was suburb. Food was excellent. Don't pass this place up.
Love guitar player!
We were in town for an event and needed a spot for a nice dinner. Rails was the perfect choice! The ambiance is cozy and relaxed yet sophisticated. Great place for a date or a group outing. The menu has a wide variety of choices, and everything we ordered was delicious. My beef tenderloin was cooked perfectly. The tomato Florentine soup special was fantastic. They have a great wine menu with a wide variety. We did not have dessert, but they looked amazing! Our server was wonderful, attentive but knew when to leave us to our conversation. Price range was perfect, and they have dishes that cater to vegetarians. Would definitely return!
As usual the food and atmosphere were second to none. Just can’t say enough about this gem.
This was our third visit and this time we sat outside. Lovely, quiet covered patio. Special of the day was crab stuffed flounder and it was wonderful. Generous serving for about $26.00. Save room for dessert. All homemade and big enough for 2-4 to share.
We sat outside and had an enjoyable evening. Good food and great service. I highly recommend this place if visiting Kerrville!
So amazing we changed our reservation for another restaurant fr the next night and went to Rails two nights in a row.
