In the third installment of our summer pop-up series, I LOVE SUMMERS IN NEW YORK, Isaac Gonzalez — head chef at Celeste, one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved seafood bars — reunites with longtime friend and collaborator Kyle Peterson, now cooking at the 1 Michelin star restaurant in LES, sixty three clinton. The two used to run the kitchen at June Wine Bar - and this is their first time back on the line together since. Expect a menu that’s playful, precise, smoky, creamy, and bright. Lots of elevated seafood dishes with a down-to-earth, street food vibe. The experience began with a fruitless search for street parking followed by less than convenient garage parking. So, you don't want to drive to R40 without planning your garage parking in advance. Upon entering the restaurant, we were seated at a decently but not overly comfortable table. No physical menus were available, which is not my favorite thing. The online menu was limited across the board, including the wine list, but interesting. We decided on the assorted empanadas and the Caesar salad to start. We liked the empanadas, and only I liked the salad. My wife found it too bitter and put her portion back in the bowl! I enjoyed it and ate all of it but understood my wife's issue. I couldn't tell whether it was the leaves or the grated cheese which had the potential to overwhelm the taste buds. Next, my wife ordered the Chicken Milanese, and I ordered the Black Rice with Prawn and fried calamari. I asked the waiter about this dish because it was on the Shared Plates portion of the menu and wasn't sure it would be appropriate as a main course for me after which my wife and I would share both dishes. He told me that it was the dish which got R40 it's Michelin Star, so I excitedly ordered it. My wife's dish was great, thank goodness, because I got about half of it! The Michelin Star dish was an utter disappointment. The one prawn was very difficult to eat. It was actually quite a pain to eat, all shelled up. The calamari were OK. The quantity of protein was low, so it did not qualify as an entree. The rice was gluey. Not impressive at all. The saving grace was the desserts. I'd just received a good medical report, so we ordered both the Bananas Foster Crepes AND the Flan with a beautiful blob of caramel and whipped cream! Oh my goodness, the desserts were fantastic. It left us feeling good and happy, but alas, we will not be returning to R40 nor recommending it.

Excellent food but service really interfered with a good dining experience. It seemed like they were short staffed, the one waitress , who did her best, seemed to be working the whole dining room. We had to ask to have our plates removed after dinner and restaurant had emptied out. But the good food and drink was enjoyable.

R40 in Long Island City, is a full bodied flavor packed experience bridging together elegantly the Italian influences on Argentina, with the native hospitality of Argentina and a homely feeling with each bite. My group of 3 was warmly greeted and catered to by an excellent and informative staff who’s dedication to welcoming us accentuated our time there.
