With one visit to R Bistro, it will be easy to see why it was the OpenTable 2015 winner for diner’s choice. Owner and executive chef Regina Mehallick founded R Bistro back in 2001. From the beginning, the restaurant focused on local ingredients to make dishes that were both rustic and contemporary. Though originally from Pennsylvania, Mehallick has cooked in South Carolina, Scotland, Ireland, England, Sicily and elsewhere.
It’s this diverse repertoire that makes it possible for R Bistro to have a new menu every week. Thanks to its friendly staff and excellent food, R Bistro is a perfect place to meet up with friends and family and enjoy something new.
Had a wonderful meal as usual ! Sadly R Bistro closes tonight...permanently !
It saddens me that this restaurant, is closing. RBistro, you will be missed!
We have enjoyed R Bistro for years (10 or so). But, at the end of February, this anchor of
northern (?) Mass Ave in Indy will be closing. So, although we had a great time and a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner, a review makes little sense at this point.
I would simply say...If you are in Indy or nearby and have the opportunity in the next two weeks to dine at R Bistro, you should take advantage of that situation.
And...I can recommend the cookbook, "Regina's seasonal table" as containing receipts that humans can actually prepare. And, if Regina is working the line (as she often does) she will sign the cookbook and chat a bit (if time permits).
Unfortunately, it appears that R-Bistro is planning to close, not for lack of business but for other reasons.
When we heard that RBistro is soon to close, we made reservations immediately. The food was outstanding as always. The service is great. We sure hope that another fine eatery will move in to this spot. R Bistro will always be remembered by us as one of our favorites! It will be missed I'm sure, by many.
Susan and I had our last dinner at R Bistro last Friday night. When we heard it was closing at the end of February, we immediately made reservations for one last dinner. We have been dining at R Bistro since its opening, and we are amazed at the consistent level of excellence in the menu, the service and the wine, and how the ambiance and decor is timeless. This is one of the few restaurants in Indianapolis with an intimate and relatively quite setting, where diners can have good conversation without yelling at each other. We are sad to see it close and will always have fond memories of dining there. We wish the best for everyone involved .
Once we read that Regina was closing the R Bistro doors at the end of February, we knew it was the place to celebrate my son's 34th birthday. Food was delicious, as always. While we will miss R Bistro, it is good to know that Regina owns and operates a nearby specialty food market, R2GO. Best of luck, Regina! Enjoy your retirement.
great Mass Ave gem! It is very sad that it is closing. Stop in before the end of February and enjoy one lat meal.
We enjoy R Bistro for special occasions several times each year, but this special occasion was Devour Downtown with a special menu and special price. I don't usually get dessert, but this one, cherry apple tart, was great: very flavorful and not overly sweet. The opening salad, which surprisingly mixed raddichio(?) and cooked squash was also great.
We loved the ambiance here - very quaint. Food was great and creative. The wine selection was great.
We had dinner at Bistro with long time friends that we hadn't seen for a few months. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers and our entrees. We had a great wine for a good price. All in all it was a great night.
I'd eaten at R Bistro a number of years ago and had one of the best meals I've ever eaten. On this occasion, I was a little disappointed... the food left something to be desired. The seafood risotto was extremely fishy and the buttermilk crusted quail was overcooked and rubbery. That being said, our server, Eli, was extremely attentive and gave us great service. Given my first experience at this restaurant, I'd be willing to give them another chance.
Are you ready? R Bistro is an eclectic little food heaven on the Mass Ave. corridor just north east of Indy's downtown scene. The food is an excellent combination of the chef's imagination and what is available locally, fresh bright and always a little different. If you are into huge portions of grease and carbs, not for you! But if you love to savor the taste and texture of real food, prepared in an imaginative way with a lovely presentation, this is your kind of place. The staff treats each guest like royalty, whether in cocktails dress or jeans and T's. ( though I'd recommend business causal! ) Get ready, get set, Go...to R Bistro! A dining experience!
Excellent service with fresh ingredients and an ever-changing menu, R Bistro is worth a visit. The prices are a little on the high side, but I had some mussels that were a great value. Service was excellent and better than the food. My pork was dry as a bone, and the salads were over-dressed.
The food was ok, but the menu was pretty limited. There were 5 entree choices only, no starters or appetizers besides 3 salad choices and 2 soup choices. I took customers and just felt very limited.
Inventive, attentive, delicious
Lively contrasts between fresh and crisp with savory and softer bite
I love that they change the menu frequently, the food was fresh, the selections are limited (not overwhelmed with too many options) and that is exactly what makes this unique to many restuarants, they focus on a few things and do them very well. The food was great, and presented beautifully. We went early and during the middle of the week, the restaurant was not packed, but got busier later into the evening. Service was good, food was good, wine was good!
Just one complaint...I ordered the expensive short-ribs. The serving was small and they were FATTY! Yuck, way over priced for what I received. I should have sent it back and ordered something different but didn't want to interfere with an otherwise lovely evening.
R Bistro never fails to please. The menu offers several creative dishes, service is highly professional and the wine list, while not overly extensive, is reasonably priced and provides a satisfying variety with high quality. Our dinner was outstanding.
Erin killed it with the gnocchi and calamari appetizer. We could eat that all night long!
Dinner for two without drinks or dessert was over $80. Pricey.
Good food great location. No alcohol.
I invited a friend who is a real foodie, former executive chef, to join me for dinner at RBistro. The menu is so interesting (and changes weekly) and my friend was impressed and really enjoyed this dining experience. Everything was excellent.....the food, the service and the ambience....fabulous.
Food is excellent and sometimes exotic. Menu changes weekly. Waiter extremely aware of the menu and quite helpful,
We had a great time, but my dinner of turkey was disappointing, dry, and a little too well done. It sounded interesting on the menu that changes weekly. The dish needed something juicy to combat the dryness and to add flavor The staff was great and the atmosphere nice. It's hard to change the menu frequently and may be too ambitious when there is a full house.
I have to admit I'm not an adventurous foodie, so when a friend suggested this place I was afraid I wouldn't like anything on the menu, since there's only a small number of entrees and the menu changes weekly. I was pleasantly surprised! I had the Norwegian meatballs in a brandy sauce with mashed turnips and potatoes. They were absolutely delicious! The waiter was able to explain the ingredients and how they were made. They also had a large wine list. The only downside was the restaurant policy of one check per table. I had dinner with two friends and we wanted separate checks. We had to spend quite a bit of time trying to separate our bills.
Our favorite place to fine in Indy!
Excellent as always. Kudos to the wait staff who are always welcoming and friendly. Nathan was our server and was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list.
I have been going to R Bistro since they have opened their doors. They change their menu weekly and support local farmers. Their food is always of the highest quality and always very creative. R Bistro is great for all occasions or just for a great night out. If you are downtown, this is a must place to eat. If you claim that you are a foodie and have not been to this R Bistro, then you have not experienced great food in Indianapolis. They are also open for lunch, try it out.
The Duck was amazing!! One of the best plates of duck I have ever had. I'm a duck hunter from Arkansas, so I've had my share of duck. :-)
Consistently the best service and food and presentation in town. The non-meat option has been much more challenging since Erin has taken over as exec chef, though. I've gone less frequently because the option just isn't usually dairy free or interesting.
We went to R Bistro for their special beer and bbq dinner and it did not disappoint. We've dined here several times and the experience is always wonderful. Just put yourself in their hands and enjoy.
Excellent menu that continuously changes. Service was friendly without being intrusive.
Unique dishes. Dessert is a must.
The usual standard of excellence made 16th wedding anniversary dinner memorable. Stuffed quail sausage and mushroom/ sauerkraut pierogis were dinner of the week. Smooth Malbec vino went well with salad and soup. While server seemed to be relatively new to me, he was agreeable and did fine.
My daughter and I enjoyed the unique menu choices, intimate setting, and knowledgeable wait staff. Awesome beginning to our evening!
We went to R Bistro as a special treat for out of town guests and ourselves. We each ordered a different meal and each was excellent. Our server was very pleasant and very capable. We met the owner/chef and shared how much we had enjoyed our experience. This was First Friday on Mass Avenue and before dinner we enjoyed the art, shopping and used book store right across the street.
High quality ingredients, cooked to perfection. A creative menu that will satisfy anyone. The service was beyond outstanding. I loved that you could watch the action in the kitchen through a big window.
My wife and I had another very good dinner at R Bistro in Indianapolis. The appetizers were outstanding. My wife thought that the Spanish bean stew was quite salty and the beans were not quite thoroughly cook. The flavors were still very good.
R Bistro had been on my list to try for the 5 years I've live in Indianapolis. I was glad to finally make it. Overall, everything was good. The interior is pretty cool. For the price point however, in the future I will probably go elsewhere.
