I was disappointed in my entrée, seafood fideos. The red sauce was very heavy, thick and rich, making it impossible to taste the few pieces of seafood hidden among the noodles and sauce.
I've been to Puritan and Co many times before. I love the vibe here, rustic but clean, good lighting, doesn't feel cramped. They have a great selection of wine and house cocktails, the food is absolutely delicious, and the servers are very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, overall they provide great service, until this evening…
Our server didn't greet us, he quickly poured our water without a "hello" or an attempt to make eye contact, and darted away. He came back 10-minutes later, and only asked "So what drinks you having?" with more of an attitude than a smile. We ordered cocktails and he snatched our wine glasses with one hand so they clanged together, stacked our side plates on the table, scooped them up with one hand, and tossed our menus back at us.
Our drinks, appetizers, and entrees came and went, all delicious and well timed. Our utensils were cleared and table decrumbed between every course and water glasses were constantly filled. But this was all done by other staff members. We only saw our server once during the course of the meal, when he asked if we were enjoying the entrees and we were basically finished.
Our server eventually asked if we would like dessert, and he noticed that I had placed my credit card on the table. He asked if we wanted the check, and returned a few minutes later, without a word, placed the bill on the table, and darted away. We waited at least 10-minutes for him to return, and watched him chat with other staff members, casually walking in and out of the kitchen without plates, all while making it impossible to get his attention without waving him down. Eventually we gave up and asked another staff member to run our card, and we left.
We love the food here, and the other staff members were very helpful and provided great service, but the experience was heavily marred by our server. We will return to Puritan and Co., but we were extremely dissappointed and wouldn’t return if this was our first time here.
Everything was great from the very start to finish! The duck breast was exceptionally tasty! Just love every single bite! I look forward to coming back for more!!
What a wonderful place! Fine dining-level food and service in a casual, neighborhood restaurant. We were familiar with Will Gilson from the Herb Lyceum in Groton, and really enjoy his continued commitment to fresh ingredients, even in the middle of winter. We had the tasting menu which were all wonderful, our favorite being the first course of burrata, pesto, beets and endive. We also had the wine pairings which were somewhat hit or miss, but the best was an Oregon Alsatian-type off-dry blend paired with a course of poached egg, Romesco sauce and salsify chips. Can’t wait to go back again and try more innovative dishes from this amazing chef. This restaurant is a gem!!
Amazing food, perfect atmosphere! We rang in 2018 at Puritan & Co and would highly recommend it!
This was my third time having Sunday brunch at Puritan. The food choices are always interesting, and the pastries are simply amazing. (Even the quiche crust is remarkable!) Service is attentive. Reservations are highly recommended around lunch time, at which time things can get a bit noisy. The drinks menu looks interesting, but I haven't tried it yet (I'm not a brunch-time drinker).
Underwhelming food, the pasta was soaked in sauce and lacked real flavor, mediocre chicken.
Maybe we just picked the wrong dishes given the high rating of the place.
Wonderful wonderful food. Our server chose an amazing wine for us. Puritan is our go-to place and we took a friend there to celebrate a 'big birthday,' but we also decided we should come back to Puritan and just eat an appetizer and a glass of wine on any night of the week.
Went on X-mas eve and had a 3-course tasting which was very good the homemade burrata, crudo, braised short ribs, pecan tart and buche du noel paired with some nice red wine all made for a good celebration. The only quibble was we also ordered oysters and just as we finished our first ones the first course came but the bartender apologized and things were much better paced after that. Kudos for delicious cocktails and the special after dinner treat. We will be back to try the regular menu.
Apps were significantly better (very generous portions as well) than entrees across the board.
Food was very good, though not memorable. Staff was accomodating.
Couldn’t linger after we finished eating bunch. They wanted to open the table to the next guests.
Loved sitting at the “counter” which was the chefs table. Chef was interactive and friendly!
Excellent food, staff and service. Great experience.
Highly recommend talking with the wine director if he is there. We had wonderful pairings and learned so much about the food and the wine.
Exquisite food and great service to match. We enjoy the changing menu and combination of out of the box flavor combinations.
We had been looking forward to going for quite some time and made a spontaneous brunch trip on Sunday. For the hype and the price the food seemed very average and lacking some flavor. Unlikely to go back with all of the other good brunch options in Cambridge.
We had a wonderful time sitting at the counter in the back. Our server was incredibly knowledgable, accommodating and friendly. The food was fantastic and came out at the right pace. The chef at the counter was fun to watch and great to speak with, though we also didn't feel like he intruded on our conversation. All around, a great night. Thank you!
This place is pricey for what you get. The food is good, not great but the atmosphere is lovely. Service is great too.
Prime rib Sunday is an excellent deal, but there should be two options for how thoroughly the prime rib is cooked. The lighting is slightly too subdued to appreciate the menu and the quality and presentation of the food.
Tasty food with good varieties. Seasonal menu. The ambience is cool, kind of rusty and modern.
Third visit here. Outstanding cocktail menu. Fab food. Very creative menu items and great to share plates. Definite recommend.
Puritan is an awesome restaurant and never fails to deliver wonderful fresh and inventive food. The service is terrific and the team approach surrounds you. One of our favorite restaurants in Somerville/Cambridge. Back tapas bar is a great, the window tables are great and always love the bar.
Good food. Friendly staff.
Never disappoints! Every dish was delicious—the pasta was cooked perfectly, the braised lamb was moist, tender and very flavorful. The Brussels sprout gratin and broccoli side dish were a perfect addition! Desserts were rich and delightful, an awesome way to end the meal. The service was courteous, expedient and attentive. Highly recommend!!!
Awesome neighbourhood restaurant with good food and great wine
Everyone made a special effort to give us a fantastic 30th anniversary dinner.
Wonderful fresh food. Can't wait to go back with a group. Comfort food for foodies!
the service was terrible. One waiter was unpleasant and the others useless - they did not seem to know what they were doing
Celebrated a birthday dinner at Puritan & Co, small party but 3 generations: teen, middle aged, and elderly. Hostess immediately gave us an excellent table and very kindly turned the speaker down, without being asked. Servers were friendly and helpful, and completely unstuffy. Tasting menu was delightful, and sparked a lot of good conversation. I will agree with some other reviewers that it's a bit on the salty side. Excellent wine list. Very cool look and feel but still comfortable if you aren't looking for "scene". Can't wait to go back!
We certainly felt rushed out, which was unfortunate.
Salad was like a compost bin. 35$ steak was gristly fatty, tasteless. Extremely overpriced and confusing food.
Great food and wonderful service. A tad on the pricey side, but well worth it.
A birthday Sunday brunch for 10 family members. Delicious food, prompt and friendly service! Our first visit, and we look forward to returning. Baked goods, Bloody Mary carafe, brunch entrees were all thoroughly enjoyed.
Surrounded by Harvard and MIT, I’ll use a grading system to rate Puritan & Company. It earned a solid C+. The fresh burrata appetizer with figs and endive was good and my pan-seared scallops were excellent; each earned an A. However, my spouse’s entree - the pork “coppa” steak had a nice flavor but was extremely fatty. He trimmed away a lot of his dinner that wasn’t edible; that dish was a B-. So if the food averaged an A-, why only a C+? The service. Our server encouraged us to ask questions about the menu and then was condescending when we actually did. We enjoy good food, but aren’t experts and she let us know it and then was snippy when we didn’t like her wine recommendation. After she took our order, we didn’t see her again until we flagged her down for the check. Fortunately, other servers brought our food and refilled our water. I think we’ll try other Boston restaurants before returning to Puritan & Company.
We had a very enjoyable dinner Saturday night at Puritan & Company. The oysters were outstanding as was the Haddock entree. The service was very attentive. Will definitely go back again!
Fun dinner with our two sons. Shared several appetizers and some amazing oysters before our entrees. We would definitely go back. Had a 6:00 reservation and were the first there but the place filled up by 7:00.
Ugh we loved everything about the place! The decor was sparse but wonderful, the pre and post bathroom space, the food (bisque and chocolate mousse, the cocktails and port). Romance and wonder.
We enjoyed Puritan & Company and overall it was a pleasant experience. The location is direct street front so I’m not sure how parking works. The atmosphere is vintage look, tables are spaced well and noise tends to echo a bit because the walls are much like a warehouse feel. Conversation was still easy so that was a plus.
The menu for Sunday brunch is quite simple almost too limited. The pastry basket was absolutely delicious. The entrees were really standard eggs dish, steak and eggs was a favorite. The Patty melt did not live up to its blue plate special name. It was prepared in a healthy way so I’m not sure we’d order a healthy patty melt again. 🤔
Service was spotty. Our waiter was okay, not friendly or even kind. Just the basics and we waited too long for refills, extras etc.
if the service improved and we stuck to what they do best I’d eat there again.
We had the basket of pastries, scramble and duck hash. Everything was great. Service was even better
