Great food prepared uniquely every time. Artist at work.
I have had the good fortune to dine at what are considered to be all the top restaurants in Philly, and, to me, and there is no better place for a relaxing five course meal on a Sunday night. Inspired, subtly creative, and well executed from tip to tip. Perfectly portioned and paced, and way up there on the quality/price ratio. Have had the good fortune to experience Pumpkin several times - never disappointed, and often "wowed". It's difficult to make something seemingly so simple very special, but Pumpkin delivers - the whole vibe, from ambience to service to food, is on that plane. Grab your date (or double), your favorite bottle (or two), and end the weekend on a high note.
My group of 4 enjoyed the Sunday evening prix fixe a great deal. The price was very reasonable for the value, and the food was well above-average with a couple real standouts. I would highly recommend visiting on Sunday evenings and enjoying the tasting menu. Service was a little awkward but they meant well. The kitchen also accommodated our allergies with grace.
Our second time at Pumpkin was quite good, but not as good our first visit a year ago. The major difference was all about the service. This visit found an awkward, fumbling waitress which really took away from the experience. Our party of two ordered 3 appetizers which all came at the same time, which is less than ideal on a tiny table. I did not think to ask the dishes to be paced, but clearly I should have here. We waited 10 minutes just to get our wine opened when we arrived.
The food, however, was excellent and that is the reason we will return. Creative pairings with excellent flavor and texture contrasts!
Best meal I've had in Philly in some time. Service was outstanding.
this is our favorite restaurant. The textures, color and flavor of the food cannot be beat. It is gastronomic!!
This was my first visit to Pumpkin, and it exceeded my expectations! The menu was thoughtful, the food was well-prepared and the service was pleasant. I will definitely return.
Simple restaurant with great food. It however does get loud since it is such a small place. Not for quiet dining.
Food has always been outstanding as is the service. This time was no different. However, I'd never eaten there on a Friday night. The noise level was horrific! I won't go again on a Friday.
Please don't publish. This is for you only.
Wonderful!!! Loved the ambiance, menu and size of the restaurant. It is small but cozy...
Food and servers were outstanding. The total cost was a little higher than I had envisioned. We went during the week, when no on-line menu or pricing is available. The per person cost for two shared appetizers and two main courses and three desserts split between 4 people was surprisingly close to the Sunday 5 course meal. Portions were substantial and the quality was great. Serving pace was ideal. Not too fast, not too slow. When we asked for a description of one of the entrees, we got a full run down on the dish, starting with the raising of the chicken. We were all impressed by the knowledge of the server and the quality of the food being offered. Am thinking of taking a small group there for our next restaurant night out.
This is a high quality neighborhoods restaurant with food that is consistently of very high quality, with inventive combinations. The appetizers (celery root and apple soup, and calamari with squid ink risotto) were [articularly good.
We dined here on a Wednesday night. There was only one other table dining when we were seated and they left so we ended up being the only table in the restaurant. We told the waiter it was our anniversary and tried to chat with him and he wasn't responsive although there was no one else there. Food was excellent but a strange empty scene there on weeknights.
Fantastic, as usual!
Love this place. Amazing food. Every time. Great atmosphere.
It was the night of a nor'easter, so the crowd was small which accounts for the low nose level. Usually Pumpkin can get a bit loud. But they were open when a lot of other spots weren't, and they honored out reservation. Food was outstanding, as always. Pumpkin never disappoints!
Pumpkin never dissapoints! Dinner was superb as always. The chef creates outstanding flavors by the layering of spices, seeds and the juxtaposition of crunch & smoothness. The Sunday tasting menu is a bargain!
Amazing food. Loved the decor.
Pumpkin is very tiny and usually quite full. The tables are far enough apart to have some privacy, but you “feel” the other diners. The amazing , fresh, creative, cuisine is what the guests come for. The service is also efficient and friendly without being overbearing.
We both started with cauliflower soup (great flavor and hearty with no cream). Then we both ordered fish,—monkfish and sea bass. Both dishes were extremely flavorful without heavy sauces and cooked to perfection. We didn’t love the chocolate ganache dessert we shared but the waitress offered to bring us a different dessert. We declined as we were already very full. The meal was reasonable and a delight!
The carrot/ginger soup was unusual, with reconstituted currants and pumpkin seeds adding extra interest, and all entrees were tasty. We shared the lemon posset: delicious! Server Michael was particularly helpful. We will definitely return.
Great little BYOB on South st . Cozy atmosphere and great service. Menu is limited but food quality and presentation were excellent.
Sunday fixed menu was very nicely balanced in portion size and taste. I really enjoyed the beet salad, and the sweet potato dish with an olive relish. The fish main course was nice and light, yet filling. There were two choices for dessert, both of which sounded interesting (a chocolate something-or-other and an apple tart). I wasn't sure which one I would have liked better paired with my other selections, but as it turns out I had to make up my mind from the outset - no option to select the dessert at the end. It's not a complaint, I just wasn't expecting it, so I picked the apple tart and it was very good.
Pumpkin's prix fixe is so consistently excellent, it's hard to imagine going anywhere else on a Sunday night.
Intimate and creative, it was great to sit back and enjoy the Sunday fixed menu. Will be back !
I’ve been here 4 times. Quality and service has always been amazing!
Absolutely excellent food. We loved the 3 appetizers and both fish entrees we had. We often find appetizers to overshadow the entree, but didn’t feel that way here. We haven’t been here in years, but we’ll be back soon!
Small, sometimes hard to avoid adjacent conversations; but we had a wonderful time.
Worth bringing decent wine.
I hadn't been here in several years. It was excellent, delicious inventif menu
Can't wait to return
Love Sunday tasting!
I love going to Pumpkin. The food is simply awesome. I lived in Philly for 10 years and have gone to all the highly ranked restaurants. I keep coming back to Pumpkin year after year (now I live in the burbs and drive in to Pumpkin). It's the best -- well -- when you go to a restaurant and want the best food and to talk to your companion it's simply the best. There are louder restaurants. There are busier restaurants with more commotion. None with better food. I've been dating one person for 12 months and have gone to lots of places. First time at Pumpkin she declared it her favorite.
I was a little skeptical at first because the menu is very small, but the food was amazing!
Great meal, wonderful environment
Spectacular dinner on Friday! But that has come to be expected as we/I have been regulars since Ian and Hillary opened so many years ago!
Pumpkin is always perfect. I have never had a dish there that wasn't carefully prepared and presented and that I didn't like.
One of my favorite restaurants! Every meal I've had here has been exceptional but last year I transitioned to a plant based diet so I've been a little leary about dining out, but Chef Ian is amazing and hasn't hesitated to create a dish to accommodate me. Actually during our last meal here my husband liked the dishes that Chef Ian so created so much he said next time we should both order the plant based meal. Fantastic to find such a talented chef.
The creative and ever-changing menu and splendid staff make Pumpkin our favorite special-occasion restaurant.
Lovely! Server wonderful. Guy at front desk told us that hen we arrived how we’d need to be out by a certain time for the next table. I then heard him hounding people next to us that their third guest needed to arrive soon so they could turn over the table. Meanwhile, tables remained empty entire time we were there. He was rude. Never encountered behavior like his in a reputable restaurant. The server made up for it. Would have been perfect if not for the jerk.
Since we live north of Philadelphia, our group of 4 tries to find a good BYOB restaurant to visit before our Philadelphia Orchestra concerts. We have had good luck overall, yet this recent visit to PUMPKIN has "raised the bar". It has been about one year since our previous visit, and although the physical space is the same, this time we found the food memorable. If I recall accurately, the food has always been very good, but currently it is outstanding. We had differing entrees (meat and fish) and everyone's meal was superbly prepared. In addition, the wait staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. We can hardly wait to return!
Amazing prix fixe Sunday dinner. So much food! I had to finish a few of my girlfriends dishes because of the quantity in each plate. We came away feeling full which is great.l. The chicken amazingly tender and juicy. Beets dish was interesting and reminded me of Eastern European dishes. Butternut squash soup was very unique with the raisin chutney. Also service was impeccable and the dishes came out quickly. Only con was the tight seating. My gf said it was very hard to ignore conversations next to you.
