Recently relaunched, Public Restaurant and Bar blends quality, sophistication, and excitement. Located on the first floor of the 400 George Building opposite the court, and under new ownership and management, Public brings together its well known chic interior design with a new twist on a great night out.

A perfect spot to escape the hustle day and night, the restaurant is split between its happening bar and lounge area which features its own lounge menu, and the more secluded dining area, serving imaginative full meals in a relaxed atmosphere.

The menu in both areas feature great gastronomy, including both favourites from the restaurant’s past, and brand new dishes with exquisite flavours, including some influenced and inspired by Peruvian cuisine. Our balance between flavours and a flair for in-house curing and cooking techniques will enliven your taste buds. Our unique cocktail menu and our extensive wine and drinks list are available throughout the restaurant and lounge.

Overpriced and underwhelming food (the duck was especially bad). Don’t bother going. The servers were nice but not attentive and didn’t know the menu so had to go back to the kitchen to ask. Definitely wouldn’t come back.

Cocktails were good for the price (happy hour). The place cleared out very quickly after around 7pm, so the bar staff were doing drink-making training. When they’d finished, we’d been offered the experimental drinks for free by a waitress, only for her to come back a minute later and tell us her manager said they’d be $10 each. These were basic drinks as well. After we said we wouldn’t pay that for experimental drinks, the drinks were all tipped down the sink anyway. There was a young man presumably on his first shift and we felt so sorry for him - the bar manager (Same one who wanted to charge us $10 for experimental basics) was really giving him a hard time which is pretty unprofessional when in front of a crowd of people, not to mention unkind. Probably won’t be back!

We came through the week for a birthday celebration dinner so it was a little quieter. The range of items on the menu is excellent - hard to chose which one to eat. We ended up sharing a couple of meals between us which was perfect. Food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. Really loved this place and will be back again in the future.

Food was a bit disappointing on this visit. I enjoy spicy food greatly but there were too many overwhelming spices added to foods that really didn’t need them and so their delicious natural flavour was completely overpowered. Eg: the cauliflower & prawns to name just 2 Also pork belly could have been more tender and done without the smoke.

The place has a lot of potential. The waiter was new and unfortunately wasn’t trained very well. He was a lovely young guy but his customer service was 0/10. They didn’t have 2 bottle of wine we ordered so gave us another that was $40 more without telling us. Then opening it and sitting in the cooler without asking if we would like a taste. The duck wasn’t cooked properly, couldn’t cut through it. Was very tough. The chicken wings were nice, although the sauce was awful. The sweet potato fries was literally a whole sweet potato cut into 4 big chucks just steamed. The cucumber salad was just awful. The staff were poorly presented and you could barley talk as everyone would hear everything you’re saying! The menus are just printed on paper with the ink basically run out so can hardly read them. So disappointed with this experience. This restaurant has so much potential!!

Inconsistent food quality and amount, raw fish not fresh, scallops entree contained 2 scallops, missing cohesiveness across each dish with regard to paired sauces and textures. Rowdy. Not up to standard.

This was a first visit to The Public and it will be my last. The service was slow and extraordinarily inattentive. As the organiser for my group of 7 I had to get up several times to ask for wine, to take our orders, for coffee etc., The food when it came was meagre and while aiming for the exotic lacked the magic which distinguishes the flavoursome and inspirational from the over ambitious and flavourless. The best components were the sweet potato and cauliflower dishes that had some flair. My group of regular and discriminating diners will not be repeat diners st the Public.

Very disappointed. We weren't aware it was a set menu and we don't eat oysters and we were unable to swap them for something. We then waited over an hour and still no food in site and it was after 9pm so we just left. Ruined our Valentine's day.
