What Insiders Are Saying
Public House is a good all-around bar in River North with solid food and plenty of TV's.
Fun, energetic atmosphere with good food and drinks!
Great vibe. Not too loud. Interesting beer mix. Great selection on menu. 3 negatives.... Calamari was swimming in grease.... Lettuce wraps were not worry the price, they should be appetizers.... When someone asks for a glass with bottled beer, bring a chilled glass not one at room temperature.
We went on a weekday afternoon. Very quiet. Cute space with good food.
Great location to meet friends. menu good choices, good bar list.. very loud though...
Public House was a very great night out. Only wish I took a bit more advantage of the many drink options they have there. The food was hearty, homey, and delicious. Number one thing you have to do is get the cake shake. So I advice saving some of the main course for later and leaving room for a filling dessert.
No occasion - we were looking for something different. When we arrived I said we had a reservation for 5:30pm and the hostess looked in the computer and did not see it, She asked us if we had a reservation and we said yes. She asked us to wait a minute, chatted with a colleague and then walked us over to a high top. We had asked for a table in opentable. The food was very good, we had the brisket sliders, hamburger and the tacos which were very tasty.
Food was cold and the milkshake was warm. Forgot one entree for 10 minutes after the others were served. I can see how people would really like this place but my experience was not the best, might’ve just caught them at a weird time (1:30pm).
Some cool dishes on the menu but the service leaves much to be desired. Felt like we were a burden to our server. Quite Loud, best for dinner with young friends. Love the Cake shake
Good food and service. We made a lunch reservation and were seated right away.
It was fun...My daughter wanted to go for the cake shake for her birthday.
I was very discouraged when I left Public House. The waitress was almost nonexistent and barely uttered a word when she did come by the table. The host at the door was just plain rude. It took a while to get our orders even though the place was not busy. The day was supposed to be a celebration for myself and my daughter as we rarely get to see one another, but the staff's attitude was a real downer.
Had a brunch reservation when they open at 10, got right in, best service of our 4-day trip to Chicago and the food was delicious on top of it!
They did a great job with a request. Everyone helpful.
Food was fantastic. Best Mac n cheese. We had 7 people and everyone ordered something different. Not one complaint. Ordered milkshake. Awesome.
While the food was amazing tonight at public house; my experience was not. Firstly I made these reservations for two of my best friend’s who share the same birthday (one being a 21st). We are new to the city and heard great things about public house and wanted to try. We sat down at 7:35pm and did not get out of the restaurant until 10pm. We were not there to sit forever—we wanted to have a good dinner and proceed on with our night to celebrate our friends. Unfortunately, our server, Paige was very rude to us all night and hardly paid attention to our table. As a prior service industry employee, I understand places get swamped, but honestly the restaurant was not busy for a Wednesday. It wasn’t until at least 9pm that our entree orders were put in and when they were, Paige explained, “Our kitchen needed to catch up.” Again, a little bit of communication of that after an hour and a half into the dinner would have been useful, as we sat at our table waiting for our entrees after our appetizers took extremely long. The worst part is: we sat for so long, my phone died. I went up to the hostess and asked to use a phone charger, she told me she was not allowed to let me use it, and I had to go downstairs to PAY to charge my phone. Lastly, there was no celebration for the birthday’s even though my open table reservation explicitly stated two birthday’s. This place seems so great but bad service left a bad taste in my mouth.
I went with my husband and daughter to celebrate my birthday and they would not let my daughter into the restaurant. It was 8pm (still light outside even). I have looked at their website and also Open Table notes and no place does is state that you need to be 21 to have dinner at this restaurant.
All was great, except the service. Our waitress seemed to be in a hurry and forgot many of our requests which had to be made several times. But, everyone has an off day. Will be going back!
Great place to gather for a friends night out!
The food was really good. We went there for the famous cake shake, which was totally worth it. The service was really slow. There were a few times I tried to wave down our server with no luck. The place wasn't packed, so not sure if they were under staffed that day or if it's usually like that. When I could get the server to come to our table, she was attentive for that moment.
I went with my family for my 23rd birthday and I got to cakeshake! It was so good! The food was excellent! I would definitely come back.
Busy and loud, but wow...great food and service. Two of our group had burgers and thought they were very good. Sweet potato tots and parmesan fries, both excellent. I had the steak tacos and they were so flavorful! Great list of beers, wine, etc. Pretzel appetizer was tasty, but a small portion for the price of $9.
I had my after-graduation gathering here for food and drinks. The food was great and the cake shake is to-die-for! I highly recommend it. My friends, family and I really enjoyed it.
Excellent service. Excellent food! Love it
We went around 9:00 on a Saturday and had made reservations. It was very crowded but that was expected. We sat outside which was nice since it was very loud inside. We got the Cubs Cake Shake for dessert and that was definitely the highlight of our meal! It was a great way to end the night!
The food was great, huge portions, well seasoned and delicious. Service was average, will definitely be back for another meal.
Food was amazing!!! Service was a little slow--but I think it was because our waitress was serving the whole bar section. Cake shake was DEFINITELY worth the drive. I will definitely be stopping by there again for their dessert. Would recommend going for either dinner and drinks OR apps and dessert. If you eat full three course you will be so full!!!!!
Saw an add on Facebook for the Cake Shake and had to have one. But there was 7 of us so we all tried one vanilla and a chocolate We came to Chicago for the American Beauty Show from the Detroit area
Made a great Last minute decision to dine at Public House. Service was quick and accurate, and I've yet to try a dish there that I don't like! Delish!
Don't do the Wednesday Special Burger+Beer. The burger is terrible.
Boyfriend & I went for dinner on a Sunday night; wasn't crowded, service was good. The mac & cheese was delicious, and the chocolate boozy milkshake with the cake on top is insanely good & not overly-sweet!
We were there for brunch and it was fine. Might be more exciting for dinner. And if we had gotten the cool milkshakes with cake on top. One highlight - deviled eggs with bacon were awesome!!
Fun place for a Special Event, food was tasty as well as the drinks. Loved the Cake Shake.
Food is delicious! Grilled chicken sandwich and pulled chicken salad were so good. But anything I have had there is very good.
Great time meeting family the evening before a family wedding. Good food, cocktails and beer. Visited twice over the weekend as location is great, next to hotels.
Everyone was very kind! Great boozy shakes :)!
Awesome place!!!!! Food, service, ambiance was excellent.
Had a wonderful time
Went with 4 middle school kids - loved the ambiance and the milk shakes. Thanks
Fish tacos were outstanding
