Service was great, our server was attentive, made good suggestions and never rushed us as we took our time on our selections. The noise level was low, it was easy to carry a conversation with friends across the table. All the food was excellent, would definitely tell friends to check this place out.
We were a party of four celebrating my wife's birthday. It was not crowded (Monday) and the noise level was low enough to carry on normal conversation. The food is eclectic and creative and requires an adventurous guest to fully enjoy the experience. Everyone in our group really enjoyed the food. The service was paced for a relaxed evening of dining. Our waiter even served us a surprise candle-lit tiramisu to help celebrate. We would certainly dine here again.
I had been to The Pass a couple of times but this was my first time to try Provisions. The ambiance was great, I loved the more casual feel and the food was excellent. We started with one of the bread and cheese pairings (pumpernickel, beer jelly and blue cheese). It was SO good. A great pairing and didn't feel stiffed on the portion but still had an appetite for dinner when it arrived. I had the kielbasa and everything about it was great. Portion size was perfect and it wasn't too heavy. I was thinking I was going to feel overly full, but the portion and it's accompaniments were just right.
The only reason I can't give this review 5-stars and would still choose The Pass over Provisions was because of our waitress. I would expect pretty decent and knowledgeable staff at a place with this sort of reputation. Our waitress was not particularly friendly and did not know the wine list. When I asked about the two sherries listed on the menu, she seemed surprised and had to look at the menu on the table to see what I was talking about. Instead of just saying "I'm not sure/I'm not familiar with these, let me go ask" she proceeded to make up a couple generic statements that immediately confirmed she knew nothing about the wines I had asked about. It left me feeling awkward and annoyed. I'm sure that if you get a better server, you will have a great time at this restaurant.
This was our first experience with Provisions which comes with many good reviews on OpenTable; sadly, we were seriously disappointed. Provisions attempts to be creative and somewhat unique but in our experience outruns its ability to deliver. The dishes are unusual but lack balance and finish. We found the menu confusing and difficult to organize a meal with variety and balance. My guess is that you need to be in a large group or be a regular customer who has navigated a confusing setup before. The vichyssoise was a disaster and something in one of the dishes triggered allergic reactions for both my wife and me (severe in my case, needed some Benadryl to prevent my throat from closing up). I was also disappointed that the wine by glass was poured from a bottle that had been opened for longer than it should have. Ordinarily, I would regard this as an unfortunate first experience and try again on another occasion, but this was sufficiently ‘off’ to make it hard to try Provisons again or recommend it to friends.
First of all, I rarely write a review so when I do I hope that someone will read it and learn from my mistakes. I don't usually complain or vent on line. While the fish on the Houston Restaurant Weeks menu had a nice flavor, the portion given to me was extremely small. I'm talking tiny. The only Chardonnay on the menu by glass was $17.00. I rarely spend that on a bottle of "everyday" wine. Trust me, it wasn't worth $17.00. If you go to this restaurant, do yourself a favor and order off the regular menu. Those that ordered burgers looked like the chose wisely. I was still hungry when I left the restaurant.
We are visiting Houston for an extended period. We were really looking forward to our visit. We had a hard time deciding between Pass and Provisions for our first visit, but thought the casual nature of Provisions would be more to our liking. All in all, we were disappointed. We had the shishito peppers and the baguette and salted butter to start. The bread and butter was the hit of the evening. The peppers were good but not great. The accompanying ingredients (watermelon vinegar, etc.) were overpowered by the peppers. Also, our order was delivered to the wrong table, so the wait was especially long. For entrees, I chose the Korean style fried chicken and my husband chose the mozzarella (Marguerite-style) pizza. My dish arrived and sat and sat with no explanation about the pizza. The pizza finally arrived at least 15 minutes later, with apologies from the wait staff. It was undercooked and runny. My husband, a pizza lover, was not at all happy. My chicken was good, but not great. I've had this dish several other places. This version, though recommended highly by the staff, t didn't beasure up. The coating immediately separated from the chicken and the space was a bit acrid. Given the service issues, the manager kindly offered us complimentary desserts. My husband thought the orange sherbet was good. I didn't care much for the corn custard, though the accompanying blueberries were tasty. We'll assume we were victims of an off night and may try it again. There were a number of other dishes that interested us.
Provisions is the perfect place for someone who into food and quality. Each time I've been, upper management has come by to ensure my complete satisfaction. With the service, food, and timeliness, I would highly recommend Provisions to everyone I know.
Eaten here in the past and have had fantastic meals. On this occasion the meal was disappointing, which was made worse by the fact that my wife and I where taking friends out and we had been raving about this restaurant.
To start with we had forgotten that the main courses come unaccompanied with sides of any sort. Our fault for not asking more questions when ordering but I feel like the waiter could have made some effort to explain the menu and recommend sides even if we had chosen to decline. Although the food was fantastic we where left hungry and ended up getting another round of bread and cheese. Service was sporadic and frustrating. I don't think it was entirely the waiters fault - it looked like he was looking after too many tables. But again, no effort to apologize or explain the situation. Finally, when I pay $100 + per person for a meal I expect the staff to be able to recommend good wines to accompany the meal without going straight to the most expensive bottle on the menu,..... again, not a show stopper but disappointing.
I found t is restaurant through open table and was looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately:
- the prices are a bit too high
- the menu needs refining.
I ordered the fish and was not counting on getting just a piece of fish. The waiter did ask me if I wanted to order anything else which I interpreted as appetizer and declined. Once the fish was delivered by itself, I ordered a salad (red something) which did not compliment the fish at all. I had two very distinct dishes to eat and I was hungry. my taste buds could not handle anything else after these two dishes.
When you decide to go, ask a lot of questions ...
The food was very good. I had the Rigatoni Fra Diavolo with Shrimp and Lobster which was excellent and a bit spicier than I expected. My wife had the Fried Half Chicken with Honey-Harissa Glaze and Jicama which was also very good. They have a pretty extensive wine selection. I picked the noise level as moderate, but it definitely leaned toward the "energetic" side.
