About Provence of Carrboro

Provence has seen only few changes over the last 15 years. And since the change of ownership in 2012 by Chef Baptist Knaven and his business partner Jerry King, you’ll still find all of your classic favorites such as the beautiful Trout Provencal and Whole Fish baked in Rock Salt, as well as the Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque on the menu.
Chef Baptist came to the United States in 2003 and has earned his accolades in the U.S. at his very successful Mediterranean restaurant “Café Zito” on the North Carolina coast, until he moved to the Triangle and started working at Provence. Working with Felix Roux, a Provence, France native, gave him the edge in classic French cuisine and that is what his menu is based on.
Enjoy a casual dining atmosphere, inside or out-, with an impressive French and international wine selection. Enjoy our great seasonal salads and entrées, and choose from our all in-house made desserts like Pain Perdu and Profiterole.
Bon Appétit!

We've been going here since it opened and this was by far the worst meal I've had there or anywhere. The scallops were undercooked and the mushroom veloute beneath was so salty as to have lost all flavor. The porkbell was also non descript. The entree was a favorite of mine until.last night. The Tagine D'Angeau was terrible. I had to pull the meat away from the sauce in order to eat it and left most everything else on the plate. We won't be back until Baptiste rights the ship in what used to be Carrboro's best restaurant

Provence has a very welcoming atmosphere from the moment you approach the front porch to stepping into the small cozy entrance where you are greeted with a proper French flair. The dining room is warm and inviting, the menu is varied with fish and meat selections. Half of our party had the Mediterranean lamb selection, and half chose the Trout and other seafood specials. The wine selection was excellent, as was the dessert options-we had the bread pudding! All portions were more than adequate. Everyone on staff was knowledgeable and accommodating-even our music request was honored!!

This was our 6th visit this year and still amazed at the quality of the foods, ambiance and chic setting. This was a late Tuesday night and the place was quiet, romantic and warm. Service was spot-on that left us no "wants." We both had sea food or fish and it was fresh and cooked superbly. Everything was fresh, well seasoned and beautiful to see.
Highly recommended.

The ambiance and service were great. The decor was charming and I can imagine this being a great spot in the summer next to a fountain. The food was rather lacking. The onion soup had such a thick layer of cheese, you have to excavate through all 2 inches of it to get to the onion soup. The crepe Suzette had a nice flambéd taste to it but the syrup from the canned oranges really clashed with the crepe.

As a lover of French food with no options within a 2-hour drive of our home, I always get excited when I have the opportunity visit a restaurant with classical, authentic French food as it is a rare treat! We decided to visit our daughter at school at the last minute and chose Provence over the other suggestion that we were given for our dinner on Friday night. The food at Provence did not disappoint! We loved the escargot and torchon of foie gras as well as all of our entrees: Duck Wellington, Lamb Tagine and the Duck Confit. The service however, left us a little disappointed with the whole experience. We joked that the server might take "French" service a little too literally - and not the good aspects. I'm not sure if it was because we had two children in our party or what it was. (I'm guessing it was the children but our daughters were very well behaved and in no way disruptive to other diners. We are in the restaurant business and VERY sensitive to this.) We were never offered a cocktail or something besides water to drink and actually had to ask if we could order drinks after we had been seated for almost 10 minutes. Throughout the rest of the meal we just felt a general slight unfriendliness and apathy from our server. His assistant (or backwaiter) was a little friendlier but given the interactions we witnessed between our service team and the other guests around us, the adults in my party were left wondering if we had done something wrong that we were missing. Perhaps most of the other diners were regulars with whom they have rapport. With that said, I must point out that the host/manager was gracious and inviting in all of our contact with him - on the phone, at the door and on our way out. Overall, still a very good meal!

Excellent food and friendly, professional service. Fairly strong wine list. Seemed to be a good number of “regulars” there, always a good sign at a more upscale place. Highly recommend it, particularly if you are a fan of modern but classic French cuisine.

We have been there many times (and it has been a favorite restaurant), but the evening started off on a bad foot when we were led to a cramped table, in a space that was really too small (between another table and the bar); when you have a reservation, you expect one of the better tables (especially in an upscale restaurant). Then, we waited and waited in the forgotten table. The food was fine — not outstanding — and we were just ready to go before dessert. We have had many good experiences there, but this was not one of them...

French/Mediterranean perfection! Chef Baptist is a Master with Fish. The Restaurant is quite simply one the Triangle areas absolute Gems....Best Truly Home Made Dessert Menus available. When the weather permits, the outdoor seating is refreshing, quite and comfortable. My wife and I drive over an hour each way as often as we can....it’s REALLY this worthwhile!

I am a many time over repeat diner at Provence. It's my favorite restaurant for great food, excellent service, and the ability to hear your friends talk across the table. Despite good food at some other restaurants, the noise factor is very important to me. I also like the fact it is an old house and has a warm inviting atmosphere. All staff are also nice and friendly.

Our last visit to Provence was disappointing. While all six of us raved about our exceptional entrees/appetizers, etc. our service was unlike what our past experiences have been. Perhaps it was an off evening since the dining room was only occupied by one other table during our arrival. Throughout the evening, it remained half full. Al Fresco dining, however, was bustling all night. Perhaps that's where the focus was that evening. Our reservation was made several weeks ahead of time since we were celebrating a 75th birthday. No mention of my birthday request was ever acknowledged so since it was a surprise, I just dismissed it.

This was our first visit to Provence on a bust weekend at UNC. Provence is small and has limited parking in the rear. We were fortunate so it worked for us. We were pleasantly greeted and seated immediately, but our table was in the bar area. Even though the bar was very small, the ambiance was not great.
On the other hand, the food was great. We started with salads and the French onion soup. The soup was awesome, as good as I have eaten. We had lamb, filet mignon, duck Wellington and the seafood medley. We all belonged to the clean plate club. The food was served very hot, a pet leave of ours, and it was delicious.
Overall, it was a really nice evening with great food and service. We will definitely go back.

Provence is somewhat of a regular special event spot for my wife and I. Our meal seemed especially good this time with prompt service. I believe it has the best seafood in the Triangle. This is not a heavy sauce French restaurant but one that specializes in farm to table fresh vegetables and fresh fish cooked perfectly.

Provence is my wife and my favorite French food spot in the triangle. It is outstanding, unpretentious, and has fit into the “best of” category for nearly every meal we’ve gotten there (meaning, this is he best preparation of a specific dish that we have ever had). I had the French onion soup (best I’ve had) and the fish of the day special, which was a four item Local sampler of scallop, mahi, salmon, and snapper. Each with its own perfectly paired sauce. My wife had scallops and polenta, also excellent. Excellent service and wine pairings as well.

We had a reservation and were a little early. We got water within about 15 minutes but sat at the table for almost 25 minutes with no waiter when we finally flagged down the person who brought water and asked for a waiter. I think he tried but was unsuccessful so he actually waited on us. Bottom line it was 45 minutes before we even got our order in. I know Saturday nights at busy but no one should have to wait that long, especially with a reservation They need enough wait staff to accommodate the known clientele

Parking is a huge issue. IT would help if there was some information about alternatives since the parking lot is a postage stamp. It wasn't clear if the neighboring business were an option since it was a Sat night so we parked at Harris Teeter.

Disappointing service. We were seated for 30minutes before the waiter brought us even a glass of wine. When we expressed our feeling forgotten, he responded that he had tables outside to care for. We understood, of course, but maybe another waiter was needed.
The food we ordered was delicious, I thought. Escargots especially delicious.

We love Provence and have gone there since it opened years ago. A great wine list, predominantly French, which I prefer, and many of the French cuisine classics are always available. It is one of the few places around that is quiet and the white tablecloths and elegant hushed ambience stand out. Keep it up, Baptist!

Provence always provides reliably good French food. They specialize in seafood, but their appetizers, salads, and meat dishes are also very good. The service is always cordial and efficient. They have some very nice signature cocktails as well. The chef doesn't try to blow diners away with innovative creations, just to serve up consistently high-quality dishes. Prices are reasonable for what one gets.
