Made a reservation at Proper 21 prior to a caps game, and it was just what we needed! The sports bar vibe was great, and the food was delicious. The waitstaff was friendly as well. Would definitely go back again!
I really don't understand why this restaurant has such positive reviews. Could be an OK place if you're 25 and don't care about good food or quality service and just want to drink and watch a game. We had a reservation and waited for a quite a while at the front door before anyone even showed up to greet us. We were finally seated; my water glass was dripping with water--just pulled out of the dishwasher I guess? Waiter was pretty good; there when we needed him. Lots of sports on the various TVs. Mostly bar food, one vegetarian item other than salads or side vegetables. They like to add bacon to just about everything. Won't be going back.
Good burgers and fries. Service was very slow and they appeared to be understaffed for a Saturday night. The food was well overpriced. I might return for drinks and bar food, but there are better values for dinner all around.
Nice lunch on a Saturday before show at National Theatre. Burger and Salmon burger were both delicious. It got a loud with the college football games showing on many screens.
Overall a very nice experience. Enjoyed a lovely lunch before afternoon theater show.
The management staff and servers are really nice and good. My chicken and the guest who were with me food wasn't good and under cooked. I got the hot chicken and it was under cooked and raw in a lot of areas. I had to send it back but management was kind enough to take it off the bill and offer us a round of drinks. The server was excellent in dealing with the situation and made sure we taken care of.
Overall the wings were the main event. They seated us quickly, but I quickly found out this is not the place for quiet date night. It was still fun, they played some music and we snuggled together so we can hear each other. I would dine here again, just know if you want to hear someone get close!!
Great choice for quick, casual pre theater bite and drink.
Food was way too salty and service was non-existent
I are here 6 months ago and returned by accident. The noise level is too high and the food is just ok.
Good food and good service!
Nicely decorated for the holiday!
Perfect for bef/after show meal - walking distance from Warner & National Theaters (complimentary glass of wine or beer with ticket stub)
Had a great meal after a play at the National Theatre, our server Manny was great and the hostess a real sweetheart! Wish you had a smaller dessert, haha. Would recommend to friends and family & especially enjoyed the Chai tea cocktail.
I had a table reserved for 6, had never been here before ... because of traffic delays coming from Maryland into DC, we arrived 15 mins late ... the staff was still very courteous and helpful ... we had a very entertaining and joyous evening, pre-theater, as we had tickets for National Theater ... we will certainly come back again, anytime ... funny, we first tried Old Ebbit Grille, but they could not accomodate us, so we tried Proper 21, AND LOVED IT!!! ... Thanks again to Steve, the manager!!! ...
More of a bar than a restaurant. Food was passable bar food; drinks were adequate. The Cosmo was heavy on the Grand Marnier. The four tops were very small for four adults having lunch. Requested that two deuces be pushed together — much better! The host was very welcoming and friendly.
Too loud to enjoy the overpriced meal!!
Wait staff shortage. Bus person couldn’t remove our cocktail glasses (really?). Has the makings of a great spot, but needs mire staff.
Our food and service experience were very very good!!! The ambiance left a lot to be desired. We were crunched into an awkward corner booth table thing that once we had people sitting next to us, was impossible for us to get out or servers to reach us without interrupting two tables. The entire seating area in the rear of the restaurant felt haphazard and unplanned. Very uncomfortable. We will return for the excellent food, but perhaps sit in the bar area.
This hip sports restaurant needs better service, or at least train their existing staff. Our truffle fries were huge and tasted amazing; however, that's the extent of our positive dining experience. Our server told us the wrong thing and charged us for it. She had to correct something else on our bill, but kept walkimg around our table looking at the floor. She thought she lost our credit card and forgot she needed to make a correction. She gave us our bill back without corrections... wow! Even the staff bringing out the dishes seemed so unhappy. Oh and in case you're wondering, they don't offer specials on Veteran's Day for all you veterans out there.
Dinner before catching a play
Cute bar and pub atmosphere. Near theaters. Hostess and service was friendly and prompt. Definitely a happy hour place - it was packed. Good happy hour specials. Sports bar with lots of TVs. Give it a try.
I really enjoyed the hip, energetic environment, and our Buffalo Chicken dip was delicious! My only complaint was that it was extremely busy and I felt our waiter gave us minimal personal attention, however the food and drinks came out promptly!
Our waitress was not attentive and not very friendly
The restaurant is very convenient to theaters, but our experience was just so-so. My husband said his steak was "fine"--tender and cooked as requested. However, my vegan, open faced, sweet potato pita sandwich was impossible to eat. Literally, I could not cut through it with a regular knife, the pita base was so hard. I was shaking the table and my plate was skidding around as I tried to cut myself a bite. Our server did not check in with us to see if everything was okay (they were understaffed with only two servers), so after several minutes my husband chased her down across the room to ask for a sharper steak knife. That didn't help, so in the end I just ate the sandwich toppings like a salad. Dessert was fantastic, though. I would highly recommend the cinnamon churro waffles topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. Yum! All in all, I'd recommend Proper 21 more for a post theater drinks and dessert than a meal.
Food was delicious. I had the gnocchi. Excellent. The brussel sprouts were a little too sweet. Great cocktail list. Very creative. Excellent service.
Tried Proper 21 after the theatre. We arrived around 5’pm and it quickly filled up. Open area restaurant with a sports bar feel as there are TVs everywhere; just perfect for a Sunday watching your favorite team. Food was good. Several of us ordered burgers that were overcooked, but still good. Alcohol menu very impressive (very high end liquors available) and the Proper Lager was enjoyable. Service got a bit slow as the place filled up, but all in all a nice place to try.
Nice location and the staff was outstanding.
A more upscale atmosphere for a sports bar. Excellent food. Very accommodating for a group of 5-8ppl (vs 2-4).
Special thanks to Ricky. His impeccable service made our experience perfect. ...and yes have the burger!
Both the women and men bathrooms needed some attention. No paper towels in the men bathroom and maxi pads all over the floor in the women bathroom. There was also a hair in my wife salad. They did take some items off the bill, but don't think I would go back.
Great restaurant, a bit like a high-end sports bar with excellent food. A little loud on Sunday afternoon because there were two football games on the TV. Truffle fries were ADDICTING! The proper burger was very good as well. Drinks were excellent.
Food was great! It was very loud but we expected that given the sports bar feel. Great location as well.
A friend and I dined here pre-matinee on Saturday afternoon. We had a reservation at noon, and by 12:30 the restaurant was full. I had the chicken mole tacos and they were really good.
We returned post-show for complimentary wine with a theater ticket (you can have beer, wine or rail liquor). We snacked on the buffalo chicken dip and it was good, but not very spicy.
The atmosphere and decor are modern and pleasing.
We needed a place near National Theater for a bite before a show. There is a dearth of places to choose from that aren't uber expensive. Proper 21 fit the bill. The Manhattans we started with were pretty good with a good proportion of Bourbon to Vermouth (albeit kinda small). The food was generally pub grub and overall it was fine. I had the Mole Poblano Chicken Tacos and they were pretty good (could have use a bit more heat). The side Caesar salad was too. The Brussels Sprouts side was quite good. However, skip the See Sea Cee Si thing appetizer. Pretty bland considering it's ingredients (the chilled crab really had no additional oomph to it except...chilled crab).
We let our terrific servers Maria and Ricky know that we needed to be out by 7:15 (we arrived at 6:15), and there were very attentive to make sure we were.
Pro tip: all bottles of wines are half price on Wednesday, and we took advantage of a nice $25 bottle of Sauvingon Blanc.
Overall the place is boisterous (it was Wednesday at 6:30pm), but less so in the back where the table seating is. There are more TV in this place than in a Best Buy, and they are ALL on.
Despite working the neighborhood, we had never heard of this place and it's been open for a year and a half. The only reason I indicate that we won't recommend it to a friend is because all of our friends are at least twice the age of everyone here.
Had tickets at the National Theater. Server did a good job of getting our order, moving things along. Place was loud (there were several football games on) so maybe too much of a sports bar vibe for date night. But good overall.
The food menu is inviting and unappealing, but the wait staff are wonderful and the beer selection is great.
We had a good time in Proper 21. The food exceeded our expectations and service was great. Prices were pretty reasonable. It was kind of loud due to live music but didn’t really bother us. Overall, I’d recommend Proper 21 for a nice dinner experience.
We were quickly seated and the service was fantastic! Food and wine was fabulous as well:)
Great ambiance! Truffle mac was great. The Proper Lady cocktail is a winner!
