About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Innovative
Experience dining approximately 30 feet below ground in historic caverns that were hand built in the 1800's. Accidentally discovered in 2018 during the building of our parent restaurant, Hudson and Essex, we have refurbished the caverns once used to store beer before air conditioning into a one of a kind dining experience. Every Friday and Saturday night we provide an 8 course dinner with wine pairings from our home winery ( Cypress Hill Winery ) using wines made with California grapes. Prepaid reservation only. Also available to book out for events.

An excellent experience beginning to end! The parings of wine with each course was some of the best we have had.

Wonderful treat for an experience meal! The vibe is very speak-easy with an upscale twist. Enjoy the elevator ride to your destination below main level. Step out and you are in the “cavern” . Take a tour and check out the house made wine cellar. Once seated, our servers, Jamie, Missy & Isaac, were very knowledgeable and consistently catered to our every ask. We went for the Friday evening 4 course Culinary experience with in house wine pairings. Every detail is attended to including personalized seasonal menus. Choose one selection from each of the thoughtfully designed & prepared courses. We ordered: First Beef Tartare – nicely chilled and tender. Lobster Roll – chunky and creamy. Second Lobster Bisque Tangelo Salad – citrusy balanced by balsamic dressing Third Filet Mignon – rare and juicy Scallop – tender and nicely crisp on top Fourth Lemon Blueberry Buckle Peanut Butter Chocolate Mousse Finished with a Turkish Coffee. The food was delicious and while not “platefuls”, we left Prohibition completely satiated. The wine pairings were on point but would like to have been able to swap out the wines during that course. The caverns can be damp and cool so a sweater may be in order. Keep in mind that the stone walls reverberate so can be a little louder when the room is full. Bathrooms are on the main level. We will be back again to try another of the delicious seasonal menus!

We truly enjoyed our experience at Prohibition in the Caverns. We were greeted by a very attentive staff person and met the owners. There were individual menus with our names on them. The personal touch was nice and made us feel special. The menu choices were very interesting and everything was delicious. The staff were very attentive and we were well taken acre of. We added wine pairings and were surprised to learn all wines were made on site. They were so good we bought 4 to take home! It is a little pricey for most folks, but it is an experience I highly recommend for a special occasion.

Sound carries, so it gets a little loud even with a few diners. The food was good and well prepared just not exciting. The service wasn't bad, but if they are going for high end it needs to be a little better. They mixed up our dishes and forgot to return for a missed wine pour until after the course was served. Courses are also not paced very well. There was a decent gap between the first two and then the rest were almost back to back

What a great experience. This place is one for the "return-to" books. Service was excellent, the food was super intriguing and delightful and something to be experienced. All staff were super helpful and knowledgeable about all the handcrafted dishes and the wines. Being 30 feet below street level was really neat and NO ONE was on their phone because signal was ZERO. That itself makes for a great setting. Since it was a small sized customer group, staggered reservation times, the noise level was perfect. See you again soon.

I understand that the scoring may not align with your expectations for this dining experience. While several aspects were executed well, including the pleasant seating arrangement and attentive staff, the overall meal did not meet the anticipated level of excitement for its price point. The experience lacked the "wow" factor you may have been hoping for, and I also feel the portion sizes could have been slightly more generous. On a positive note, the staff was exceptional, and it was a nice touch to see the owner personally engage with guests at each table. However, to be completely honest, given the cost, I would hesitate to recommend this establishment.

I wanted something special/different than our usual dinners out. This definitely delivered. Loved that we had no cell service so there’s no temptation for the mindless phone scrolling. We truly enjoyed our time and experience and the owners coming around was a true treat. You can tell they are passionate about their caverns and it is evident in the experience. Only recommendation we had was for the personalized menus to have the background of the caverns on the back of the menu for guest to read while waiting and an added treasure to keep.

My parents LOVED their experience at the caverns!$ they had a four course dinner experience. I also informed them that it was my mom’s birthday. She said they made her feel so special! They sent her home with a bunch of little things and the food was really incredible. Definitely would recommend!!

If you are looking for a unique dining experience, this is it. Located underground, the caverns are stone lined and date to the 1800s. Service was outstanding. Food and wine pairings were very good. Friendly and attentive staff. Since the venue is underground, it can get cool. Recommend wearing layered clothing. Also, can get noisy at times.
