What Insiders Are Saying
Preux & Proper is a New Orleans themed restaurant/bar in DTLA that is surprisingly tolerable.
From start to finish, we had a fantastic experience! Some of the best food we've had in LA. We will definitely be back.
Charming setting, well designed. The food different and well done along with excellent service. I thought the noise level was rather high, the music too loud and the large TV screens showing Steel Magnolias produced extra , unnecessary distractions. The food, though very well prepared, is not light, but very tasty
Menu options are exciting but limited. We went during a slow time so it was hard to assess the ambience. Overall it was nice hipster-type place. Staff is very friendly.
Amazing food, great overall experience. The staff was friendly and energy was great.
I thoroughly enjoyed the decor, location and staff. I was a bit disappointed by the absolute lack of balanced seasoning of the few dishes i ordered: burrata plate was good, slightly under seasoned, but the toasts that came with felt like a salt shaker exploded on them!!! Carrots were fantastic although I understand fat is needed to cook them, I believe some should be removed from the plate before being served to guests. All and all, a good experience but not a great one.
Took my teenage daughter. Great southern food and drinks. Cool building. Excellent service.
I would come with friends. Super convenient for pre show at Ace Hotel or Orpheum or Rialto.
Love Preux and Proper but really wish they would bring bottomless mimosas upstairs to the second floor. There’s not enough space for large crowds downstairs.
Unbelievable! From the moment you walk in the door you know you’re in for a great experience. The staff is friendly and on point. The food...incredible. Brought 2 friends who grew up in the south and know real southern cooking and they said it’s the best southern food in la period. Everyone in our party was blown away!!
Service and was outstanding.
Not worth any amount of money
We found your resto thru yelp and the place looked really cool. We probably won’t come back for dinner but will definitely come back for some drinks.
We had a dog with us so they sat us on the first floor but they only had hi top tables and high chairs with no back rest. So a little uncomfortable.
We ordered the dungeness crab hush puppies and the fried catfish. The crab hushpuppies were burned. The crust was black. The catfish had great presentation but it was a little dry.
I think we expected a nice dinner place but it was more of a bar or drinking place. The place is great for a night out with friends... service was great.
But not a place for a nice sitdown dinner with your mutt.
Terrific. Great food and service.
Great service, good food, fun vibe, awesome place!
Lovely downtown spot for great food . Suggestion. The host at the top of the stairs ( the male in female attire ) could be more inviting. Our check in felt like such an imposition to him . Also everyone thanked us as we left except him . We had this experience the last time we dined there also . Our waiter Tony was fabulous.
The food was great, the service was great, the flies were bothersome.
Really liked this place had a fun atmosphere and I like the old movies playing in the background. Food was excellent and the service was even better. Would highly recommend for a date night.
Food and service were SPECTACULAR.
Great food!! Excellent flavor in each dish! Very cute little place, with very thoughtful decor.
We love this restaurant. We live on the Westside so we don't get to go often, but every time it's a real treat. The owner Joshua is so nice and charming. We were sad that he doesn't work on the weekends anymore.
The catfish is amazing, the cornbread is like a cloud of goodness and the corn on the cob with pork cracklings was delicious!
Did not like majority of my food ordered.. place had too many flies and nats, and a foul sour smell. maybe old cleaning rags need to be washed more frequently
Nice room. Nice staff. Nice food and drinks! Will go again...
We were looking for a place near the Mayan theater. This looked good, within walking distance. We shared the crispy fish tacos, a chicken sandwich and small pizza. The tacos were just ok. Not much fish and not really a taco. The chicken sandwich was outstanding, crispy, spicy and the cole slaw cooled it off just right. The pizza is on biscuit dough. Interesting and VERY good. We had the pulled pork version. I wish we skipped tacos and went right to this. It was so hot it hurt my mouth, but I kept eating!!! Fun place, if were in the area, will stop here again.
Great service and the food was delicious! A modern twist to popular southern comfort foods. Intimate setup in a great location.
We had a great dinner, loved everything we ordered. Cocktails were off the hook! Love P&P!
Terrific food, and table service. Host team leaves a lot to be desired. Seemed very aloof and uninterested.
I thought the food was above average, but not on par with the pricing. I had the $24 Chicken and Waffles brunch and my chicken was a bit dry, and the waffle was fine, but nothing to write home about. For $24, I would expect a higher quality meal. The biggest selling point of the restaurant is definitely the ambiance. It's very cute. Our waiter was great as well.
Staff and service were outstanding as was the food and drink.
I had the Captian Creole Bloody Mary (awesome) and for my brunch selection, I ordered Shrimp & Grits and Mac & Cheese while both rich dishes they were both outstanding...I only wish I could have had some dessert...becasue I saw it walking by me so often on the way to another table.
Next time I'm in DTLA I'll be sure to visit this restaurant again.
Amazing food, atmosphere, and service. Food comes out as it’s ready, so it’s a fun dining experience.
Drinks and service made the difference. Small portions for the price but overall food was tasty.
Blew away our expectations and cannot wait to go back. One of the best meals we have had in LA in the 13 years we have lived here.
Everything we ordered was outstanding. Highly recommend all of it, especially the beef rib.
-Pasta with peas (special)
Drinks were great as well. We got the vodka drink with the watermelon balls and the spicy reposado purple drink. Both of us ordered a second round.
Neutral. Quite pricey for the potions, but a cool scene.
The food is great and the service is outstanding. It’s a definite must try place.

Would return for the food. However, not professional service with second appetizer arriving way after main course was finished and server stating that is the way they serve and cocktails arriving way after first appetizer.
Very good ambiance. Comfort food good for sharing. Tasty if you like sour sources and bread crumbs.
We had a lovely time! Food was excellent ! We will be back
I went for Sunday Brunch. It was awesome, food was great, drinks were great, scenery was nice!
Great food as always! Looking forward to coming back.
I was super excited to try this place after reading the reviews and looking at the menu and pictures online. The restaurant itself is pretty neat! The decor is very well-done. I tried the Dungeness Crab hush puppies, which were absolutely delicious. Maybe one of the best hush puppies I’ve ever had! The garlic wild boar bolognese pappardelle was also pretty tasty, with a nice combination of garlic and Cajun flavor. The beignets with banana foster sauce for dessert was a sweet treat!
The only downside, which is why I’m giving 3-stars, was the service. The food and the ambience were easily 4 or 5 stars, but the service was lackluster. After checking in and while waiting at the bar for our table, I got an email from OpenTable saying I was a no-show to my reservation. Thinking that odd, I went back to ask the host if perhaps he misheard my name. His response was “no, I heard you fine. You were fifteen minutes late. I no-showed you.” I can understand marking a reservation as a no-show if a guest misses the reservation, but he didn’t do that until after we had already arrived and checked in. Does the restaurant have to pay for those OpenTable points or something?
At the end of dinner, no less than 2 minutes after signing the credit card slip, the busser came over and asked “do you mind if I clean the table?” The table had already been cleared of dishes; he was talking about actually cleaning it. The feeling it gave was “okay, you’ve paid. Get out.”
The food was good, and the place itself was neat, but I felt very unwelcome. Based on that, I’m not sure I’d return. There are a lot of other places that make me feel like my business is actually valued.
Lovely as usual. The service was superb and ambiance is the one of the bes!
