What Insiders Are Saying
Preux & Proper is a New Orleans themed restaurant/bar in DTLA that is surprisingly tolerable.
The food was good but the service was awful. Our waitress did not seem knowledgeable about the menu and she behaved as if she didn’t want to be there. We had to get up to cash out and she just walked right past us multiple times without saying sorry or thank you. In retrospect she didn’t even deserve the small tip that we gave her.
This review is more for OpenTable than for Preux and Proper.
FOR PREUX and PROPER:
But before I delve in, PP is a nice restaurant. The service is good and consistent and the food is pretty good. No issues there.
The issue we had was that I had $50 OT credit that I used for dining at PP. I accidentally booked it for the wrong day so I canceled the reservation and rebooked it for the correct evening (i.e. the night we went 12/10). This was our anniversary dinner.
When I rebooked, I got a request for using my gift card so I did. We show up at the restaurant, eat, have a nice time, then only to find out OT had not loaded our card again. It was embarrassing and ruined our night.
A) I've never come across a more lousy, incredibly incompetent website for redeeming one's points for credit. It's so cumbersome, so complicated, and so unforgiving. This is not the first time I've had issues with OpenTable's points to cash system.
B) I spent over 30 minutes at the restaurant just trying to contact OP to see what they could do...and they did nothing. They couldn't even honor the credit card issued to me and said I'd have to use my $50 voucher another day for another restaurant. Absolutely absurd. What sort of program is this where the company that issues you the card can't honor it on the spot??
C) What OT should have done was talk with the restaurant, on the fly, and sort it out and make sure the customer (i.e. me) was taken care of...not tell me there's nothing we can do and you're shafted you need to pay for the whole thing this time. It's disgraceful.
D) For my troubles, they "were to give me 300 points....$3. I said the least you can do is give me a 1000. They had to check to do that and said OK. So they gave me $10 credit. But I was left with an $80 bill.
E) OT needs to seriously revamp the points to cash/gift card system they have. It's appalling. A 5 year old child could haved designed a better site. Pathetic.
The food was great and super authentic Nola with a Cali twist. I would definitely come back and make the drive. We came all the way from the Valley as I was reading so much great reviews. Ok a few minor minor issues. 1) They need purse hooks on the patio badly. There was no place to put my purse but on the ground and the other patio table, everyone was like clutching their purses in their laps because no purse hooks!! 2) Hipster waitress was slightly rude but couldn't tell if that was just her hipster personality or just bad service.
The Chicken Fried Pork Belly was heavenly. Will return because of it.
Overall I'd like to thank Greg for making our experience possible. The rabbit jambalaya way fantasic and the 36 hour aged prime rib was decadent
Good service and decent food (exceptional dessert) but the upstairs was closed for lunch on a Saturday so had to sit on bar stools for a business lunch.
Food was a little disappointing (neither of us actually ate our entire meal). The company and the attentive service really helped.
The upstairs area is nicer but too loud (in my opinion).
The food was excellent and the service was even more so.
100% recommended in DTLA.
On a Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. the restaurant was out of 6 items on their menu. The service was poor and the due to the fact that almost half the menu was unavailable, I wouldn't go back.
I accidentally brought a friend with me to this restaurant, who lives in New Orleans. He laughed because I had not noticed that it was New Orleans cuisine when I made the reservation. The food was fantastic the table next to us was so much fun and we ended up swapping food with them it was our first time at the restaurant and the gentleman at the table next to us was bringing his girl there for the first time too. We all agreed it was a great place to return to because we just thought everything was so yummy. While the portions didn’t seem huge, we couldn’t eat more, if we tried. It was perfect.
Loved that I was able to celebrate my birthday with class and great food.
Loved the food! We got lucky to sit upstairs outside, and the seating and outside vibe was really special. The food was great and the cocktails were unique!
Loved the ambiance and the authentic NOLA cuisine!!!
Unique building and even more unique menu. Excellent date night spot as the ambiance is romantic. Highly recommend the Prime Rib & Collard Green!
The food is excellent! The building and decor are beautiful! It definitely exceeded our expectations in most categories. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same about the service. It started great, but faded to below average toward the middle and end of the meal. I was most disappointed by the fact that I advised them on the app and in person that we chose their restaurant for a birthday celebration. It was disappointing when the table next to us received a birthday acknowledgement and the same server skipped over my significant other’s celebration. It was a missed opportunity for a restaurant with an excellent foundation in food to make it an overall fantastic dining experience.
Birthday party thanks !!
Good service and wonderful food! The crowd is lively but not obnoxious. Overall great time!
Awesome service. Upstairs dining room isn’t always open.
No attendance when arriving, very loud, floor vibrates, amateur uninterested inattentive servers. But steep prices. This place should play at the level of an upscale sports bar, not more, which means prices should be half
We came for our anniversary. The host was incredibly friendly. We were early and he gave us the choice of a window table or a nice spot outside, then bought us 2 gasses of brut. The meal was rich and decadent, and exactly what we were looking for. Hush puppies were like no other hush puppy I’ve tasted. All of the food was delicious, and on the heavy side, but you don’t come here for light fare.
Our waiter seemed a little disengaged, but no big deal. He eventually smiled and had a conversation with us.
We ended the evening with beignets, also on the house :)
The host did a great job of making us feel special and we had a great night.
Great food! Great service!
We had a wonderful time. The food was both interesting and delicious. Pate was fantastic, beef rib out of this world, and the key lime pie sublime. We'll be back!
Came here on a Sunday for brunch with a group of 8 people.the bottomless mimosas are only for downstairs but because there was no room for my group downstairs we we’re able to be places upstairs with bottomless mimosas. The food was great i loved it! I had chicken and waffles and the mimosas were flowing. They had a movie playing while dining and had a wonderful music selection which were playing more uptempo oldies. My only issue was with the waiter. He definitely had an attitude which kind of brought my happiness about the place down. He seemed to be upset about my group having bottomless mimosas upstairs instead of downstairs. Also every time he refilled our cups he would spill it everywhere. finally, after we thought we paid the final bill he comes back with another bill with an attitude which i didn’t like and i informed the manager of this. Also i never got my happy birthday beignets from this place due to the waiter not givin them to me. I would still go back as long as i don’t have that waiter.
The food was terrible. We both got food posioning. Worst experience ever
Inventive but approachable menu -- vegetable options are great. Expect to eat family style as the food comes out randomly.
Fried bad food. Terrible service. Dirty silverware. Ugh
The food was good, but it took a very long time to get attention from any of the servers or bar staff.
Food was delicious and service was courteous. Only downside is they ran out of a lot of interesting menu options.
Food was good but they need to be more service conscious. Lots of delays due to not enough staff
Ordered some of the Southern Fried Whole Hen, it was utterly delicious. The rest of the meal was ok. Shame that the wine list is so limited and not very interesting at all. Service could be improved, dishes all came together and not spaced out, service was rushed and we were asked to leave as there was another table booked. We understood as it was a busy night, but we had booked in advance and were still ordering cocktails. Overall it wasn't the best experience, but it is a cool place with pretty good food.
Cannot wait to go back for more of the chicken and biscuits!
The hostess was a bit rude and dismissive, however a gentleman came over a bit later and was very kind. (After waiting a few minutes to be acknowledged. The waiter was wonderful. Drinks were good, the food wasn't terrible, but wasnt outstanding.
Creative, delicious and generous small plate dining in a very warm, welcoming, friendly and fun atmosphere! Great cocktails, too!
Great meal from start to finish. Feel free to ask your servers questions about the drinks and food. I felt like had we it would have changed our minds about a couple items. For example my boyfriends 2nd cocktail of the night was the rum drink and it comes it a huge pineapple goblet that has two straws. I suddenly became the DD the second it hit our table. I wish I would have known how big it was when we ordered, also I wish it would have been suggested to us from the start, because we could have both just had that for the entire meal. Also the menu is split up by protein styles, but not necessarily appetizers versus entrees so ask ahead of time. I do love that they do window to table style. It’s nor for everyone but I was just sharing everything with my bf so perfect for us. Loved the personal style of service. I had one server all night, but the bartender brought out the drinks to all the tables all night. It was awesome and fun to go to before the concert at the Ace Hotel!
Had a great time. My 2 friends waffle came out burnt and the manager was extremely apologetic and took their entrees off the check! Wasn’t expecting that. Awesome experience.
Great food and ambience. Drinks 🔥🔥
Food is always amazing and made with care and consistency.
this was my second time dining at p&p and sadly was a bit disappointed. the first time their pork belly was tender, flavorful, all around probably one of the best pork belly plates i've had over the years. this time, however, it came out dry as a rock, tough to chew, no flavor (despite being surrounded by abundance of flavorful ingredients). i literally could not swallow the pieces w/o gulps of water behind the bite. other stuff was great though - catfish, caesar salad, hush puppies. just be aware, you might get an awful batch of pork belly.
LOVED the food and the service provided was welcoming, friendly and efficient. We were however disappointed that the upstairs dining area was not open. Upon arrival we were told it was not open on Monday through Wednesday (I think). We did not know this from looking at the website or booking our reservation on Open Table--it should be noted in both locations. Will go again when the upstairs is open.
