Service was earnest but really spotty. Roasted corn salad and fried catfish were A+. Collards were nasty. Cornbread was tasty but more like batter than a cake. Great vibe to the place and me and my buddy had a great visit.

It was a Sunday, so unfortunately some of the dishes we wanted were no longer available. But we didn’t feel like we were missing out at all, because the other dishes were amazing, and the service was so impeccable. They even comped a dish for us due to the inconvenience.

Love the management, seated us in a great location. Manager even covered my valet which was so cool. Service was good, drinks were good. The octopus was solid . The corn was ok but I had to cut it off the cob myself. My date and I weren’t much for eating it off the cob. Wasn’t thrilled about the gumbo which kinda killed the meal. And they ran out of key lime pie which is a must have when I dine southern cuisine.

The food was really good, but portions were not family style shareable really like we were told. Our server recommended ordering 5 things for six adults. The corn only had 4 cobs, chicken was 4 pieces with 4 tiny biscuits, carrots were enough for 2 and hush puppies came with 5. Basically nothing was large enough for everyone to try everything except the two pound fish. We ended up ordering three more items and were not full even then. Service was ok except had to ask for a drink refill 4 times.

I love the shape of the building - triangle like the Flat Iron in NY - windows open upstairs on both sides with iron and ivy - gives definite vibe of French Quarter and beautiful breeze going through even when not in the 'outside' area. Food is NOLA yummy - everything we ordered was fantastic and the icy daiquiris are - WARNING - so refreshing, powerful and great. Love this piece of LA in LA.

We had a wonderful time celebrating my boyfriends 30th birthday with his family. Everyone enjoyed the delicious flavors from the south. We had the octopus, duck, beef rib and fried rabbit. The side dishes were also delicious. We also happened to be there on the night of jazz night and enjoyed smooth tunes. Overall, great experience.

It would be great to have some of the delicious sounding options from the "Preux" menu available on the "Proper" menu. The food was generally good and our waitress was nice, but we had to ask from water refills and utensils to serve the "family style" food on several occasions. We were seated at the end of the restaurant with the large windows on both sides which was wonderful, but sitting at a high top table on a back-less barstool is uncomfortable for a whole dinner.

The food does not taste like anything. We ordered eggplant, cauliflower (good), crab hush puppies, okra gumbo, beignets., 2 cocktails. With the exception of the cauliflower and cocktails the food was devoid of taste. We ordered cornbread also (tastless w/consistently of pudding). We were told couldn’t order cornbread (or Mac n cheese or other things) because it was a “bar menu” item. 1 kitchen but can’t order bar items at tables. Ridiculous. Total bill $162 w/o tip. Also, so dark everyone was using their cell phone flashlight to see the food.

We decided to check out PREUX & PROPER for a rare date night (longtime married gay couple) and were somewhat intrigued by the concept of fancy, re-conceptualized southern cuisine. However, the one thing about southern cuisine that one can't really eliminate is that it is often fattening (there's a whole section on the menu that is "Southern fried.")

That being said, we ordered the grilled yellow sweet corn (very good--probably a highlight), the dungeness crab hushpuppies (sounds better than they are in reality--it's still deep fried cornbread with crab inside), roasted japanese eggplant (the other half really liked this) and a pate' not on the online menu (I always think it is problematic when the pate' doesn't really spread but mostly lies on top of the bread. But the bread was good and it came with a delightfully sweet/tart berry reduction and interesting mustard).

Overall it was a perfectly acceptable dining experience but not one we would repeat again because we're not that interested in funky reconceptions of southern dishes. But if, that's your thing, PREUX & {ROPER does it well.

The service was excellent. I had a delicious mocktail and the other half had a glass of wine and a cocktail he greatly enjoyed.

The us a grest option for a casual meal between friends, kitchen is a bit disorganized so dishes show up random service was goid but not very friendly. Restaurant was noisy and once we ate we did feel obligated to leave in order to free up the table for next guest. Al though I noted we were celebrating a birthday and reminded our waitress at the beginning night effort was made by the staff to help us celebrate.

We came here for our anniversary during Dine la and we were pulled in by the menu online and weren't disappointed. The portions were very large which was nice. We had the beef heart pastrami toast my favorite dish and I didn't even order it! The hush puppies were yummy but filling. The octopus dish was very good and the Humboldt fog cornmeal crusted zucchini blossom Chile relleno was super delicious and rich. Finished by sharing the beignets and rhubarb cobbler and both were yummy. The ambiance in the restaurant upstairs was nice but it was a Monday so it was probably slow. Downstairs seemed a little more happening where they don't take reservations but still serve food and have a bar. Great restaurant! Would go back again!

I've wanted to visit Preux and Proper for a while now, so when I saw they were participating in Dine LA I decided it was finally time to go. We made our reservation at 5:45 hoping to have a few drinks on the Happy Hour menu. Upon arrival we were asked if we preferred upstairs or downstairs. I chose upstairs since it's mostly highlighted in reviews and pictures. The upstairs host confirmed our reservation and sat us in the dining room to the right of the outdoor/window seating. I was a bit disappointed since the ambiance played a big party of why I wanted to try Preux and Proper. While looking over the Dine LA menu I wondered where the Happy Hour menus were. I asked our server who said Happy Hour was only downstairs. I wish we would have known but we ordered drinks anyway. Shortly after that another couple sat next to us asked the same question but they were told Happy Hour is at the bar AND downstairs. Odd, but, I still wanted to enjoy our experience. On to the food, the braised greens and catfish are delicious. But this is where the flavour stopped. We ordered the gumbo for our main entree and the flavour was just not there for the price. I'm happy I finally went, but for a $141 bill I felt a bit disappointed in the food.

Visited for the first time for dineLA. Food was good, but the portions were way off. The appetizer was too big, the entree was just right, but the dessert was too small. And they were delivered in the wrong order with my entree arriving before the appetizer. Friend had ordered a cocktail and asked about happy hour pricing when the bill came. She was told that you can only get happy hour prices if you order your drink from the bar downstairs. But we just spent more money by ordering for a full, three-course meal. Now they're gonna nickel-and-dime us at the end of the evening? Not very hospitable!

Great foods and taste very good and unique. The seating table is great with view and outdoor with nice weather. The only drawback is the food come too fast (between first and second courses) so some of them get cold before we start to eat or it will be prefect. The service is great too and keep coming to pour water.

Outstanding food. A little warm but went there on one of the hottest days so far this year, so what do you expect out of a historical building? Cocktails were EXCELLENT, just the right (heavy) pour. Food was just as good, the biscuits that came with the fried chicken were the best that I have had since my last trip to the South. It's a great dining experience with charm and great service, can't wait to go back!

This is place is an amazing, cozy space with a New Orleans feel. We immediately felt welcome, greeted by upbeat staff who got us a breezy table by the window. Our server was sweet and professional and was super accommodating when my friend who is Vegan asked what she would recommend. She came back out after talking with the chef and offered us an awesome sounding list of dishes that could be made Vegan, most of which we ordered. The chef brought out our food personally and even comped us his signature cauliflower salad dish, which we didn't order. Super creative menu and everything we had tasted incredible - Japanese eggplant dish my personal favorite. Wine list was eclectic without trying too hard and well-priced. I had a yummy, dry Reisling which was perfect with the meal. Can't wait to go back!
