What Insiders Are Saying
Preux & Proper is a New Orleans themed restaurant/bar in DTLA that is surprisingly tolerable.
Overall nice place. Very pricey for what you receive. I understand it is downtown LA blah blah blah. Good not Great
Came here for “Valentine’s Day” dinner. As soon as we arrived we were greeted and directed towards check in. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The drinks were good, but the highlight of our night was the Chile Relleno dish. Can’t wait to return.
I wish there was a way to give our waiter Rob more than the five stars. Also our host was exceptionally kind warm and welcoming and deserves more than the five stars. We will certainly return the next time we are in Downtown LA. And next time we are getting dessert. That’s the only thing I wish we would have made time and room for. The banana foster beignets.
Great food, vibe, and experience! This place definitely had the southern feel, coming from someone who's been to Louisiana many times to visit family.
A bit of attitude from the host. The server was great though. Food was awesome. Get the sausage and hush puppies.
Had a lovely Vday dinner with my girlfriend thanks to great service by Chuy. The food was fire too.
Yes, this restaurant is absolutely AMAZING. The staff are friendly and the food is out of this world good.
Best service from all staff. But our waiter Jesus was the most outstanding waiter I have ever met in all of LA. The drinks were inventive, classic old fashioned. The food was delicious. Not over salted but well seasoned and balanced. Everyone in our family enjoyed their meal. Great birthday celebration. Totally enjoyed the bday beignets. Yum!!!
The Mac and cheese was amazing!! Some dishes were overpriced, but overall, great experience.
I live in NYC. EVERY TIME I come to LA, Preux & Proper is a must! This time I took my group of 4 for a visit. They loved it as well!
We felt that the hush puppies lacked flavor and didn’t have enough crab, and the sauce was VERY spicy to the point where we couldn’t enjoy them so we sadly had to send them back and they still ended up on our bill. HOWEVER, everything else was FANTASTIC! The mussels were spectacular and the octopus was the best either of us have ever eaten. Our server was also very helpful. Overall, we had a fantastic anniversary dinner that sent us back to New Orleans. So glad to have a place in our neighborhood with sick an authentic feel of a place we both love so much!
Preux & Proper really hit the mark on everything I could of asked for. The atmosphere, the food, the service. Will be back again soon!
Excellent food and service! Felt like we were on St. Charles St. in New Orleans! Our daughter went to Tulane and so it was nice to be there - really enjoyed our experience! I publish the Beverly Press & Park Labrea News and look forward to returning and writing a review for the newspapers and our annual dining magazine- "SEE, SIP, SAVOR"

Imaginative menu, knowledgeable and friendly staff with immaculate execution. A delightful meal and evening!
We loved the food - it really was very delicious. Highly recommend the chicken fried pork belly! Our server Rob was awesome. The reason for 3 stars is our cocktail took nearly 20 minutes to arrive and the dessert we ordered took over 30 minutes. Rob was brilliant and took those items off the check but it soured our experience.
Five dishes shared amongst four of us. All excellent. The chicken liver pâté was amazing. Cocktails were very good.
The food is absolutely delicious, though a bit over priced for the portions. When we arrived at 6:30 for our reservation, we were told they were going to need the table at 8pm, which was fine because we were going to a show at 8pm. However, drinks took way too long to come out (and they completely forgot one of them for 20 minutes until we said something), and I had to finally flag down the server to ask him to take our order so we wouldn’t be late for our show. The food came out pretty quickly once we ordered, though drinks still took way too long. And then they completely forgot one of the dishes we ordered, so I had to just cancel it. The server was nice, but maybe was spread too thin or just wasn’t paying close attention to his tables.
Food and atmosphere were very good. We loved the prime rib and the catfish. The cobbler for dessert was the only thing we found bland and mediocre.
Nice atmosphere. Beautiful window and outdoor seating upstairs. Bottomless mimosas during Sunday Brunch only for thr downstairs, which is self seating and seating can be limited! The food was excellent. Shrimp and Grits was the best I've had! Great place and will return.
Ambiance was pretty good, food was average, nothing spectacular. The bottomless mimosas were the best part, but be aware that those are only served on the first floor which is first come first serve seating. Second floor is for reservations and the bottomless mimosas are not offered. The service was below average and the waiters kept giving us different information and were not very friendly.
It’s very crowded and they try to squeeze our big party into a small space. Everyone around us was also sitting very closely. The food was ok but a bit too salty. Service was also slow and didn’t get much attention from our waiter.
Preux & Proper, downtown started life as a pub in an odd shaped building dividing Spring and Main street, but don't be fooled by the outside, as inside, someone really knows what they are doing. Its certainly a "scene" with a nice sized bar downstairs for eating and drinking and upstairs as well. The service is excellent with someone always checking on us to see if everything was ok. The fried chicken I had was simply terrific, the Caesar salad was as good as I have had and everything is over portioned. The only complaint was that everything came at the same time. So you need to order an appetizer (Fois Gras was delicious) and one main course to split between two people otherwise you will waste a lot of food. Good drinks, but limited desert menu.
I mostly like this spot, it's quirky and tasty. The food quality has slid a bit in the past year, and the service even more so. We felt rushed as if our server was doing us a favor by taking our order. I'll likely go back but will temper my expectations.
The food was phenomenal. Since we came with a bigger group, we pretty much tried everything on the menu. We tried the rising sun cocktail which was great as well. Definitely worth the visit.
Fabulous food! Great service and the drinks were yummy too!
Absolutely fabulous
This restaurant was an awesome find for a date night. It was super cozy and with great staff. The staff was very attentive and fun to interact with. The bartenders in the first floor bar was awesome and attentive. They answered questions eagerly asked by the guest. The food was great and the beef was really tender. They did have happy hour but did not like any of the selections in there.
Awesome experience. The dine-LA deal is a steal for the great food and overall value. I strongly recommend it.
The food was amazing. Though, working in a restaurant myself I don’t understand the whole “food comes out as it’s ready”. Why can’t You course it out so that everyone’s food comes out at the same time? Maybe start the other dishes at the table a little later to synch the delivery to the table? It seems like an easy fix but a petty excuse on the restaurants end. My friends and I had been eating for 15 minutes and my one girlfriend still didn’t have her food. When we asked our waitress she said “food comes out as it’s ready”. And we waited another ten minutes, still nothing. When we ask again the waitress suddenly says “it was brought to the wrong table so we’re making it for you again”. Why wasn’t that brought up beforehand? And on top of that she wasn’t apologetic. At this point all but one of my girlfriends have finished their food. I was here for my birthday and that really left a bad taste in my mouth. Being a waitress myself I would have told my table preemptively and apologized. Somehow that isn’t common sense for everyone.
Was super excited to try this place since I had it bookmarked for the longest time. Maybe it was the expectations that led to an average experience. The service was really great - but unfortunately, the food was underwhelming. My favourite dish of the night was the pork belly. Other than that, food was average, especially considering the high prices.
Food was very tasty, excellent grilled corn, poor boy combo and crab hush puppies. All were terrific. Service was fine but lacked friendliness & attention.
I've been here a couple times before this visit. I took my daughter here for her birthday. We made reservations for 8:30, and were told that last call for food and drinks was in 15 min at 8:45. Not a huge deal, but made things feel more rushed than necessary given when we were seated. They were out of several dishes we wanted to order, but being the end of the day, perhaps that was to be expected. We had the grilled octopus, which was really good and done perfectly. We also had the grilled calamari with fried green tomatoes (big fried green tomatoes fan here), which was tasty but the calamari was a little overcooked, which is easy to do . The andouille sausage was our least favorite, but still tasty. We also had the catfish, which was really good. We had cocktails before the meal and wine with the meal, both of which were good.
All in all, a good meal, good drinks, no complaints. Service was attentive without being pesky. I'd recommend Preux & Proper to friends and family.
The food was cooked well, but some of it lacked flavor. I was disappointed with the taste of the gumbo. The fried hen and the catfish was well cooked but the meat itself wasn’t anything to write home about. The sweet corn, greens (w/out the egg) and the pork belly were all very good and well seasoned. The presentation of the food was great overall and the ambiance was great. Too bad the flavors weren’t there.
We made a reservation thru Open Table for Sunday at 3:45. We intended to order off the brunch menu since the restaurant’s website said it went until 4pm. We had a concert at 6pm and specifically timed our reservation early enough to catch the brunch menu but not so early that we’d have a lot of downtime before the concert. When we arrived at the restaurant, I noticed that it also stated on the outside of the restaurant that brunch went til 4pm. However, when we checked in with the hostess and mentioned the brunch menu, she told us that brunch was over and was kind of rude about it. I said I thought it went until 4pm because that’s what the website stated. Again she told us kind of rudely that no, we have to order dinner. So...we said that’s fine, we’ll still get seated. The server came and my husband ordered a coffee while we looked at the menu. Unfortunately, my husband did not find anything on the dinner menu appealing and decided he wasn’t going to order anything. I didn’t want to order something if he wasn’t going to eat. So we decided to go somewhere else and asked the server for our bill for the coffee. We paid for the coffee and left.
Besides not finding the menu appealing, we didn’t care for the service either. The hostess had an attitude and the server had absolutely no personality. She wasn’t rude but she wasn’t friendly at all and didn’t crack a smile.
To top it off, later that evening I got an email from Open Table stating that the restaurant marked us as a “no show” and that the next time we should please notify the restaurant if we’re not going to make our reservation so as to leave the table open for other diners. First of all, we were NOT a no show. We showed up, got seated and ordered a coffee. Secondly, the restaurant was almost empty! There were lots of tables available so it wasn’t like we took up a reservation time that could have been taken by someone else. We will definitely NOT be coming back (even though the brunch menu looked good).
Went with a group of 11 people for DineLA. The host & waitress were all flexible and friendly. The food was great and as we shared everything. Great flavors and variety. It's rare to find good southern food in LA, and the place had great energy.
I made reservations during DineLA, but all of our party opted to order from the normal menu and skip the special menu.
The service was great. Everyone from bartenders, the host, the entire staff was welcoming, friendly and attentive.
We ordered drinks (the Punk Evans was fantastic), salads, and a couple different veggies for the table (the grilled corn shouldn’t be skipped). Most of our party opted for the catfish, which they thoroughly enjoyed. I chose the 36 Hour Prime Boneless Beef Rib and it was well worth the price.
Really, the only issue we had with Preux and Proper was with the timing of the food being served. The entire table received their entrées, but I was told mine would (understandably) take a bit longer than theirs. So they sat with their food for about 20 minutes waiting for my dinner. During the wait we ordered another vegetable dish. The Prime Rib arrived and we all finished our dinners without the vegetable, which arrived about another 15 minutes later.
Don’t get me wrong, dinner was great and we will be returning. It’s just that the restaurant is established and they should have their food delivery timing down by now. Entrées should be served when all of the table’s entrees are ready.
In conclusion, the food is very good and so worth it...
Great food! The Dine LA menu was an awesome value. So much food and a glass a wine came with. I would definitely dine here again.
This is our favorite restaurant downtown. It’s not stuffy, the food is amazing (worth the price) and generously sized (when they say family style they actually mean it) and we have always received friendly, prompt service. Cocktails are A+. Ambiance is amazing- feels like dining in a grand home in the south. Definitely make a reservation. In warmer months, the three little tables on the upstairs terrace are our favorite place to sit. They always have a great DineLA menu as well (almost all of their menu to choose from, includes a glass of wine and dessert- almost too much food!).
The customer service is top notch and the maitre D is absolutely breathtaking. the food, in comparison to Mom's, is authentic! awesome!
Delish food, and great waitstaff, but the kitchen took forever to create our meals.
