What Insiders Are Saying
Preux & Proper is a New Orleans themed restaurant/bar in DTLA that is surprisingly tolerable.
The service is ridiculous!
Three of us went for Dine LA Summer 2019 and we were seriously impressed. Tons of options for each course and we were all extremely pleased with our selections. The glass of wine was an added bonus. We also got cocktails that we really enjoyed. Great, attentive service, excellent atmosphere. I would definitely recommend and I plan to return.
Drinks are delicious! Fried Game Hen was yummy ! Decor is super cute.. gives you NOLA vibes !
My wife and I were trying to find a place to eat before a show at the Ace within walking distance. I didn’t know what to expect when I made our reservation as downtown has changed considerably since my days of frequenting the area. I’m glad to say my wife and I were very happy with the entire experience here. The staff was fun and attentive, the food was imaginatively delicious and the portions were generous. We cannot wait to head back with friends in tow.
We tried Preux and Proper during during dinela and it was awesome. The food and drinks were phenomenal and our waiter was very cordial and knowledgeable. We ate upstairs in the Proper section and the ambiance was really nice; as we were able to feel a breeze on what had been a really warm day. The only thing is since everything is made by order; it took the peach cobbler that we ordered a tad bit longer than we expected and we ran a little close on time for our next engagement. Other than that; everything was Awesome and we will definitely visit again!
We had an excellent evening from start to finish. Our server was attentive, professional, and helpful. We ordered 8 small plates and 3 entrees to share and each one was delicious and different. Our table of 6 shared everything and really enjoyed the range of flavors. The seasonal vegetables (corn, sprouted broccoli, carrots and beets) were a highlight in the small plates and the hot rabbit was our favorite entree. The beignets were to die for as was the peach cobbler. And a huge bonus was that there was not loud music so we could actual have conversations among the whole table! Loved the open window atmosphere on the second floor. All in all a great meal with friends!
Love this restaurant, made a reservation but didn't use it a private party upstairs. Great night, service was a little slow it was so busy!!!
They make accommodations but the taste is the same.
The mimosas were not good at all. Waffle was too bready chicken was dry. But our waiter was awesome which was the best thing about this place
Excellent Fried Chicken, beignets.
Okay: Waffle was not crisp and the inside was rather dense.
The shrimp and grits was very tasty but a little too much salt.
Excellent: Service. Very hospitable and accommodating.
Very Good Mimosas
Nice cute restaurant. The “Proper” upstairs was more the vibe we were looking for. I have some dietary restrictions but apparently they are on a strict no substitutions policy which I find a little awkward in LA since so many people have allergies or are on certain restrictive diets. We ended up accommodating my diet by ordering an extra vegetable dish and it worked out ok. Cute drinks. Pretty expensive- the plates are shared but small so I would go on a special occasion. We went out dancing after and we felt light enough to do so.
I ordered the catfish, shrimp & oyster po boy, fries, corn bread, and I was extremely disappointed......the fries and mimosa was the only thing that I enjoyed. The presentation of everything was nice & the service was okay, unfortunately I won’t be back
Food and service was outstanding
I had put in a special request for a table and we were sat at a less than ideal spot when we first arrived and when I asked to be resat the hostess made arrangements to have us moved to a hightop table by the windows, the ultimately desired spot, and the change really made the evening particularly special. We so appreciated him making the change for us. We had great service and the food was delicious, as per usual. All around, an amazing night and our out of town guests were delighted. Thank you for providing such excellence. With gratitude, Karis
The food and service were great!
We selected Preux & Proper because it was close to our hotel and concert venue. If you are staying at the ACE and going to see a show at the Orpheum P&P is the place to eat dinner - so convenient and delicious! We follow a Whole30 diet and we were a bit concerned if we could stay close to compliance, but it was easy. The whole menu seemed to made for people watching what they eat - thank you, LA, for being health conscious. This did not in any way take away from the menu and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We started with the Marinated Cauliflower Romanesco Salad, the Charred Octopus and the Smoked Porterhouse Pork Chop. The cauliflower salad was like nothing we've had in a restaurant before - I am going to try to recreate it at home. Octopus is easy to screw up, but this dish was perfect. The pork chop was actually prepared MEDIUM and the side was nice and light paired with the meat. I can't say enough about much we liked our meal and the cocktails and service were good, too.
Sat down and no one brought menus. Waited no be came to greet us. Walked out and ate elsewhere.
Food and drink were on point. Service was decent but not expeptional. It's still chilly out, so the whole outdoor window scene without heaters doesn't work too well.
Great service! Not too long of a wait with reservation. Although happy hour price don’t apply to guests sitting at the tables, we were happy with the drink options. One of our dishes got cancelled due to supply, but they apologize with a small dish on the house.
Great Southern Food. Had Mac and cheese and skillet corn bread, which was so rich and buttery. Also fried catfish on remoulade. Beignets for dessert and Peach Cobbler which was also delicious.
We enjoyed a very attentive and delicious experience in the Proper dining room.
The grilled yellow sweet corn and the squash blossom chili relleno were our favorites. However, we loved the special green beans and the sea trout, which was perfect. We closed with the beignets. The cocktails were creative and delicious. We had the Thugs Passion, P&P Old Fasioned (very good), the Rising Sun. I want to have the whiskey taster next time.
We'll be in downtown in two weeks and will return.
Nice place and atmosphere. The host and service was very good. The food was very tasty.
They were so accommodating to my party! We had a great time
We were seated upstairs, next to the bar. The music was very loud and there were several large groups of VERY loud people. Service was chaotic, server was changed out mid-service, drinks were ordered at the same time and delivered randomly with several drinks delivered that were not what was ordered. One drink was never delivered and had to be reordered. Maybe it’s a new spot and they are working out service kinks, maybe the large/loud parties threw them off. It’s a pretty spot, not sure I would try it again.
Preux & Proper was amazing. It was our first time, and won’t be our last. Everything was delicious. Everything! Service was wonderful. The decor is gorgeous.
Shaking up the food scene in LA, Preux & Proper is a much needed addition to LA for those looking for good comfort food that doesn't break the budget. Located in downtown LA, the restaurant is definitely a hidden gem with a couple of amazing options (both for food and alcohol). A lot of their dishes are great for sharing, but don't expect to walk away hungry because they do a really good job of portioning out their dishes.
Their Sunday mimosa brunch is also worth the trip to downtown LA, especially if you've never tried their alcoholic slushy.
The waitress was very attentive and helpful wich is always nice. As for the food...it was succulent : the vegetables, the braised poulpo and the chicken fried pork belly were excellent. I would highly recommend !
Amazing food! SO much flavor and amazing presentation.
Love this place. If you love creole/southern soul food and a fun location with a spirited ambience then you’ll love it, too!
Fun place with grear food and drinks. Southern comfort in the bustling DTLA nightlife.
Drinks are good but there’s nothing special on food, I think it’s overpriced. Place is cozy with a nice jazz vibe. The service was great but takes forever though.
The service was very slow and disorganized. The food, however, was very good. The atmosphere was also good. Prices were pretty high for what you received.
From start to finish, we had a fantastic experience! Some of the best food we've had in LA. We will definitely be back.
Charming setting, well designed. The food different and well done along with excellent service. I thought the noise level was rather high, the music too loud and the large TV screens showing Steel Magnolias produced extra , unnecessary distractions. The food, though very well prepared, is not light, but very tasty
Menu options are exciting but limited. We went during a slow time so it was hard to assess the ambience. Overall it was nice hipster-type place. Staff is very friendly.
Amazing food, great overall experience. The staff was friendly and energy was great.
I thoroughly enjoyed the decor, location and staff. I was a bit disappointed by the absolute lack of balanced seasoning of the few dishes i ordered: burrata plate was good, slightly under seasoned, but the toasts that came with felt like a salt shaker exploded on them!!! Carrots were fantastic although I understand fat is needed to cook them, I believe some should be removed from the plate before being served to guests. All and all, a good experience but not a great one.
Took my teenage daughter. Great southern food and drinks. Cool building. Excellent service.
I would come with friends. Super convenient for pre show at Ace Hotel or Orpheum or Rialto.
Love Preux and Proper but really wish they would bring bottomless mimosas upstairs to the second floor. There’s not enough space for large crowds downstairs.
Unbelievable! From the moment you walk in the door you know you’re in for a great experience. The staff is friendly and on point. The food...incredible. Brought 2 friends who grew up in the south and know real southern cooking and they said it’s the best southern food in la period. Everyone in our party was blown away!!
