Enjoyed dinner here before a show at the Orpheum. Early enough to take advantage of happy hour drinks and appetizers. Everything we tried was wonderful. Will be back to explore the menu further.
We stumble upon this place while in LA. Quite the neighborhood find. They had an extensive happy hour special/menu. We tried the Carolina bbq cubano, fried Mississippi catfish, baked mac and cheese, braised collards and beignets. While I would have preferred less meat in the greens, overall the food had a great taste and was well seasoned. The house wine (Wycliff brut, I believe) paired well with our meal selection. Our server Chuey was very attentive and provided superb customer service. I would highly recommend for every day dining or special occasions.
Not a great place. Save your money, and fly to New Orleans. ;)
Overpriced, extremely small portions, bland cocktails and food.
Ran out of oysters before we arrived. Terrible service.
Cool, hip vibe but the place is small and loud. Food was good but pricey, drinks were okay but the service was impeccable! Will be back but will try to hit happy hour and maybe grab a table outside on the patio.
Just have to differentiate the upstairs "Propper" from the downstairs "Preux" menus. "Proper" has the more diverse menu.
Great food and great atmosphere. Perfect for a date night.
Other than the oddity of needing to go upstairs to get a table downstairs, the atmosphere was nicely casual, the service timely and the food quality excellent. Sitting near the door does tend to punctuate the evening with the period boom of the shutting door, but that's easily overlooked thanks to the quality of the meal.
Perfect for anniversaries! The best customer service I’ve ever gotten.
Food is very hit or miss. Some dishes are delicious, some not so much. Overpriced for what you get—for these prices I’d rather go to Bavel or Majordomo.
Food was good, however the menu did not accurately reflect the menu posted on Open Table. There were not as many options unfortunately.
I ordered the hush puppies, which tasted pretty good but, on the menu, was listed as a $22 entree. When it came out, it was served as a small appetizer and I felt ripped off. I had ordered this as my only course thinking it would be enough to serve one person. I’m not sure why the waiter, who was very friendly, didn’t point out that what I had ordered was small and more like an appetizer. If I had known, I would not have ordered 4 small balls for $22.
Another thing that wasn’t so nice was the seating. The only option for chairs are bar stools crammed up against the walls. This was okay since we weren’t there long, but I could imagine it being very uncomfortable for older guests or small kids.
Overall the experience was nice, but not somewhere I would return to due to what felt like overpriced food and the fact that downtown parking is minimum $15 on top of what we paid for the food.
Great meal as always. Only problem was deciding what to order from the incredible menu
I always have a good experience when I come! The food is AMAZING, the opens definitely set the vibe, and service was fast.
Good environment. Quite enjoyable.
Sunday family brunch.
The skillet corn bread is fantastic!
We ordered a couple of the Bloody Mary versions and they were really good.
The shrimp and grits were okay , the grits were coarse ground- would have been better if creamier. Flavor was delicious.
The crawfish roil was good too and on the proper grilled bun!
One of us ordered the egg and sausage dish- it was delivered to our table long after the other dishes and hubby was not impressed. Eggs were over cooked and the sausages were dry. Hoping that was unusual.
Overall is was a good experience, would like to try the dinners.
Flavors that we have not found in any other restaurant. Bravo.
This was a cool place. Good crowd. Food was good with interesting textures and tastes. I didn’t realize it was a share plate experience but the portions were very generous. I tried a really good drink that was a gin pineapple mule type thing I loved! We skipped dessert but I wish we hadn’t. The beignets looked amazing!
Too many items on the menu to try. We'll have to go back and try more. Didn't quite understand the crush in the lower lobby/bar; upstairs there were many empty tables. We had reserved a table for two but decided to eat and drink at the bar. The wife ordered an Aperol spritz and reported it was light on Aperol; I can confirm it was also light on prosecco because I watched it being made. I had an old fashioned, and it was well built but, like most old fashioneds, mostly ice cube. The moules were good and nicely seasoned; crab hush puppies excellent; squash blossom chile relleno very tasty; and the house andouille sausage more like thuringer than andouille but still good.
The food is orgasmic, I was very pleased. Shared among my party were the chicken and waffles, shakshuka, French toast and shrimp and grits, all just amazing. Will definitely make a return trip.
I was too hung and busy enjoying my food to take photos, I wish I did, yet another reason to return.
My only complaint is that the bottomless mimosas are only served downstairs 🙁
Staff Awesome, attentive, very nice and helpful !! Food excellent. I Would definitely return.
Everything was perfectly seasoned, creative and delicious! My new favorite restaurant! Our group really enjoyed dinner.
Excellent as usual. This is my fourth or fifth time eating here, and it was amazing and expected. My wife and I love this place, and we let everyone know about it if they are looking for a great place to eat in DTLA. Great food excellent service and a party like atmosphere keeps it lively! Come for the food, and leave feeling full and happy.
I made a reservation for my sister's bachelorette dinner and we were able to be seated in the outdoor patio. The service was amazing and they showed my sister a great time. It was my third time at the restaurant and definitely not my last. Drinks and bar food options were great. Thank you!
The food just wasn't good. Service was nice. A couple items were burnt.
Amazing food and love the ambience
Great food! Great service!
Fun experience but very limited menu on a Saturday. The fried chicken sandwich was very good but small for the price. I wish they had offered fried chicken on Saturday.
It was good
The food was amazingly delicious!! My fav was the charred Octopus and Pork Belly! Not forgetting the Beignets sooooooo HEAVENLY!!!
This was the best dineLA deal. It was a little odd that the food came out all out of order (some of us got our entrees before our appetizers) but everything was delicious, and nobody was left out of the eating with the shareable portions. The ambiance was fine, except that we could feel a shaking/vibrating as we were seated upstairs on the higher chairs. That was a little distracting. But otherwise, it's a neat space and the food is worth going back for!
I brought my parents to Preux & Proper for dinner when they were in town during DineLA restaurant week. We were all extremely impressed by the quality of the food - that 36 hour steak was incredible! Everything was flavorful, generously portioned, and delicious. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable and the food was all coursed out perfectly and delivered in a timely fashion. Our waters were always full and the food runners were lovely. The ambiance was very nice (save for the loud table next to us, but that is not the fault of the restaurant) - inviting decor and lighting and clean bathrooms. We each had a glass of house wine as part of the DineLA menu, but as a bartender I’d be interested in trying one of their house cocktails next time. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience!
Out server was wonderful, taking the time to explain the different menu items we were considering. Want to return to try the items we couldn’t this time around.
Unfortunately, there were ALOT of flies where we were sitting in the back, near the plants and restrooms.
Great location, good food and good drinks. Casual and easy.
Truly an incredible first experience. Took my team out for an outing it was fantastic from start to finish. There was no dish we ordered where we thought it was just 'ok'. Every dish was flavorful, filling, and overall amazing.
I had the cubano which I highly recommend. Had so much flavor. It was my first time eating it. And now I crave them just thinking about it.
I think this place is very good. I'm from the South so there food is very good and elevated. I think the catfish was a bit disappointing but everything else was great, probably needed more of the sauce it's served with. Of all things I loved the cauliflower salad dish it was cold but so flavorful I couldn't stop eating it so highly recommend that.
The service is ridiculous!
Three of us went for Dine LA Summer 2019 and we were seriously impressed. Tons of options for each course and we were all extremely pleased with our selections. The glass of wine was an added bonus. We also got cocktails that we really enjoyed. Great, attentive service, excellent atmosphere. I would definitely recommend and I plan to return.
