We love this restaurant. We live on the Westside so we don't get to go often, but every time it's a real treat. The owner Joshua is so nice and charming. We were sad that he doesn't work on the weekends anymore.

The catfish is amazing, the cornbread is like a cloud of goodness and the corn on the cob with pork cracklings was delicious!

Thanks,
Debbie

We were looking for a place near the Mayan theater. This looked good, within walking distance. We shared the crispy fish tacos, a chicken sandwich and small pizza. The tacos were just ok. Not much fish and not really a taco. The chicken sandwich was outstanding, crispy, spicy and the cole slaw cooled it off just right. The pizza is on biscuit dough. Interesting and VERY good. We had the pulled pork version. I wish we skipped tacos and went right to this. It was so hot it hurt my mouth, but I kept eating!!! Fun place, if were in the area, will stop here again.

I thought the food was above average, but not on par with the pricing. I had the $24 Chicken and Waffles brunch and my chicken was a bit dry, and the waffle was fine, but nothing to write home about. For $24, I would expect a higher quality meal. The biggest selling point of the restaurant is definitely the ambiance. It's very cute. Our waiter was great as well.

Staff and service were outstanding as was the food and drink.
I had the Captian Creole Bloody Mary (awesome) and for my brunch selection, I ordered Shrimp & Grits and Mac & Cheese while both rich dishes they were both outstanding...I only wish I could have had some dessert...becasue I saw it walking by me so often on the way to another table.
Next time I'm in DTLA I'll be sure to visit this restaurant again.

Blew away our expectations and cannot wait to go back. One of the best meals we have had in LA in the 13 years we have lived here.

Everything we ordered was outstanding. Highly recommend all of it, especially the beef rib.

-Burrata
-Corn
-Sausage
-Beef rib
-Pasta with peas (special)

Drinks were great as well. We got the vodka drink with the watermelon balls and the spicy reposado purple drink. Both of us ordered a second round.

I was super excited to try this place after reading the reviews and looking at the menu and pictures online. The restaurant itself is pretty neat! The decor is very well-done. I tried the Dungeness Crab hush puppies, which were absolutely delicious. Maybe one of the best hush puppies I’ve ever had! The garlic wild boar bolognese pappardelle was also pretty tasty, with a nice combination of garlic and Cajun flavor. The beignets with banana foster sauce for dessert was a sweet treat!

The only downside, which is why I’m giving 3-stars, was the service. The food and the ambience were easily 4 or 5 stars, but the service was lackluster. After checking in and while waiting at the bar for our table, I got an email from OpenTable saying I was a no-show to my reservation. Thinking that odd, I went back to ask the host if perhaps he misheard my name. His response was “no, I heard you fine. You were fifteen minutes late. I no-showed you.” I can understand marking a reservation as a no-show if a guest misses the reservation, but he didn’t do that until after we had already arrived and checked in. Does the restaurant have to pay for those OpenTable points or something?

At the end of dinner, no less than 2 minutes after signing the credit card slip, the busser came over and asked “do you mind if I clean the table?” The table had already been cleared of dishes; he was talking about actually cleaning it. The feeling it gave was “okay, you’ve paid. Get out.”

The food was good, and the place itself was neat, but I felt very unwelcome. Based on that, I’m not sure I’d return. There are a lot of other places that make me feel like my business is actually valued.

I’ll preface by saying I’ll give it another try likely downstairs at Preux. They seemed to be having much more fun at Sunday brunch down there. Hubby and I ordered the chicken and waffle, crawfish roll and braised collards upstairs at Proper. We were told it would be delivered to the table when it came out of the kitchen and it was. The crawfish roll which was just ok, then the chicken and waffle which were both a little dry. It comes with honey but it was too dry without syrup which could be requested at the extortionist price of $2. The waiter never bought the syrup. We were finished with our meal and still no braised collards. Our waiter offered them to us for free so we stayed to try and glad we did because it was the best tasting of them all. We also ordered the shareable drink for $27. Good but so filled with ice it felt like a ripoff. I’d still like to try the downstairs despite little about this visit being very memorable.

I have been several times but it was a first for my gal pals and they really enjoyed the eats. The favs were the Mac and cheese, skillet cornbread and lamb chops in addition to the shrimp Po boy and crawfish roll. Great lunch and vibes and several of the ladies ordered more to take home for dinner.

The ambiance and food were great. It’s definitly pricey for the portion sizes you get. Additionally, even though we expressed for our large group we needed separate checks, that wasn’t provided and resulted in a lot of confusion. Tasty cocktails and staff was very knowledgeable about food items.

My catfish entree was served cold and the portion was too small for the price of the dish. Also, the fish was not well seasoned. It was so disappointing because I have dined at Pruex and Proper before and really enjoyed the catfish. I would have sent the fish back but the waiter didn’t timely return to the table to check on us

We used to LOVE Preux & Proper. It really was like being in NOLA for those of us who can't be there as much as we'd like. We would come for happy hour and linger on into dinner that was always a special treat with things not found on other menus around town. But then, the exciting menu changed, changed again, & again, to a point that there's not that much resembles Louisiana/NOLA cooking anymore. The menu used to be extensive, with fun, innovative takes on beloved staples, but we didn't find any of that this last visit for Mardi Gras. We had Red Beans and Rice, which IF the Andouille sausage had be cut into small pieces & mixed with the Rice and beans, it would have been delicious (this is how it's done in Louisiana). However, to have to fight with a link laid on top of the rice/beans mixture & cut it myself was more work than I want to do when I go out to dinner. The use of "red pea" beans vs the traditional Red kidney beans was confusing & very disappointing, especially when there was barely enough rice and beans to equal the size of the sausage. Sadly, it wasn't creamy like it had been in the past & just a disappointment. The jambalaya was served in a cast iron skillet, which kept it hot, but also continues to cook it, so there were bits that were quite crispy, also lacking in shrimp, I think we found 5-6 in a 9" skillet. For the $, it was not worth it. To top it off, red beans and rice & jambalaya with no hush puppies to be found? Really, people? For dessert, the "King Cake Beignets" were nothing more than "cake pops" without sticks, with food colored icing in green/pruple/and gold. By no means were these "beignets". Last, it used to be a part of the NOLA experience here that they'd finish off with offering each guest a little "lagniappe" ("a little something extra") from their 3 daiquiri machines, to finish the meal. Well, not anymore. In fact, the manager (?) didn't even know what a "lagniappe" was, much less the tradition they used to have. So disappointed

Great find before a concert at the Orpheum. Downstairs bar packed and noisy, upstairs dining room (marginally) quieter. Very efficient service. Great cocktails. Wine list very average and overly priced for the "grocery store" labels offered.
Steak tartare was delicious, though a little too much ginger-worschestershire sauce...only one duck yolk to cut the pungent sauce...really needed two. Stuffed squash blossoms with Humboldt Fog cheese wasn't the prettiest dish, but downright tasty. The octopus was tender and flavorful, though it would have been better warm, rather than room temp.
All in all, an interesting menu and I would like to go back and try some other dishes.

I made reservations for a late lunch on Saturday and had not been there before. Not a good experience.

But a Cool little joint with a building that marks the joining of two streets, a little narrow and has an outdoor patio at one end and a bar at the other with an upstairs that was closed at the time.

Upon arrival we were offered seating, and mentioned our reservation, to every employee who walked by including the bartender. There was an 8 top on the patio and a few tables in order. Service timing was horrible but everyone was intentionally nice. I wouldn’t be surprised if a local Target went out of business and everyone there came to this place and started working there —that day. No one knew what they were doing including serious delays in greeting the table, nothing happened for 15 minutes then drink orders (had to do both myself by going to the bar) ordering the food (waiter recommended every item), asking about drinks ordered, (unknown delays as they were not that busy), getting only part of food order, waiter checking back (didn’t happen) and even getting the check. The waiter brought a free beer and comped one of the sandwiches which was the only reason for the better score (and the food was good, but not composed properly, ie coleslaw on po boy was okay but a plate full of water and dressing squeezing out with every bite. Needs lots of work!

Cool joint, won’t be back.

We love the food and had a good time, would’ve been better if we didn’t make a reservation, and the need to leave a credit card with the reservation, and then stick us outside in the rain, with a leaky patio. I get it if we were a walk in, but it was pouring rain. The reason given when we asked why they stuck us outside is because the people inside had a reservation.

Had a reservation for dinner, in the dining room. Upon arrival, we were informed that the dining room was closed and would have to eat at the bar. Food was not memorable. The catfish dinner was nothing more than some greasy fried fish fingers that tasted more like fast food chicken fingers . The waiter was very helpful and polite, so we didn't leave unhappy. Just would not return.

Nice atmosphere. Lively, but not too loud and lots of windows for people watching. Food was disappointing though. Cornbread was too thin and soggy from too much butter. Beef heart pastrami toast and pork chop were good, but nothing special. Squash blossom chile relleno was awful. Everything was so covered in a weird thick gravy with hominy and beans that the batter became gelatinous lumps. Would come here for drinks if catching a show at the Orpheum, but there are better places to eat.
