It’s great to have a quality, eclectic restaurant in San Marcos, finally. The wine list is interesting as they are presented in old used books. Our book was controversial and we pointed out to management that someone might be offended by the content. He apologized and reviewed all of the books. Oddly there wasn’t any Prosecco on the wine list. Food was great. Wait staff was attentive perhaps too attentive sometimes if that is possible.
Great decor but the food quality doesn’t match the prices. I felt sick from the chicken wings. The pasta bolognese tasted like Chef Boyardee.
This was the second time my husband and I had dinner here. Both time service was great. The food and drinks were delicious.
Flies everywhere!!! They have their sliding doors open and the room was full of flies on a Sunday morning. The flies were all over the table as we were trying to eat. They have a Bloody Mary cart that has bacon strips on it for putting in the Bloody Mary and the flies were all over the bacon and the employees were just shooing the flies away and serving the bacon anyway. When we saw that we left our food, got our bill and left.
Food was good but relatively uninspired. Definitely not worth the premium prices, and the beer and wine selections were poor at best. Good cocktails if you don’t mind spending $12-$14 apiece.
Excellent service, food was fantastic. Slight issue with the bolognase, corrected with no issues. Offered to come dessert because of that, but refused (by us) as all the food was fantastic. Started with Brussels sprouts and fried chicken - awesome. Bolognase and filet were perfect. Smoked s’mores and five cones were delicious. The salted caramel and lemon sorbet (five cones) were outstanding. The drinks were to die for. The “comfort blanket”, expression marrtini and carajllo were fantastic drinks - well made. Ask for a side of vanilla or cream for the carajlllo as it just makes a great drink better.
We will be back - fantastic place for dinner and drinks.
We stopped in for a quick bite before a movie. Our server was great. Quick and attentive. However, I feel it was really expensive, for a local gem type of restaurant. I've been to all the PrepKitchens.
We are regulars there. My husband invited other couples to join for reservation. Our waiter was a bit off. Very pleasant, knew it was a Birthday. Usually the service is excellent. No mention or candle of birthday.
On criticism- the coffee. My husband has always ordered coffee after dinner. He and our other guests commented that the coffee seemed weak and no flavor. The food is so delicious- why not serve delicious coffee? They have French press pots , so flavorful coffee would be fantastic.
Nice addition to the area. Tasty food, nice service. A bit too bright. Overall, I would go back.
Beautiful setting inside the construction area of San Marcos that will eventually be a very cool destination area. The food was quite good. The server was fantastic. Will be back.
I really wanted to like this restaurant but unfortunately I don't think I would recommend it. This restaurant is still pretty new and I think it needs to mature a little bit before I will try it again. They seemed overwhelmed with the number people and probably could have used a bit more staff. The food that we had was very good, there just wasn't enough food on the plate. I would suggest to them that the protein size was just right, but they could have added more of the potatoes or vegetables so that you are getting more of a meal. I had the yellow tail, with bok choy and there was barely any bok choy on the plate but the yellow tail was delicious. My wife had the same experience with the scallops. So you are going to pay a lot and probably leave hungry. For two adults and two kids, with wine and tip, we paid just over $200, combined with the slow service and incredibly noisy atmosphere (tile walls probably not the best choice), I don't think it was good value. Very good food though.
Food and menu were good.
Waiter was a space case and when we asked another server for help she ignored our request.
When manager asked how are experience was we told him food was really good and was honest about service... his reaction was just as immature as the servers. No apology or acknowledgement of any of the feedback provided; just basically asked us to come back and give PK another try. ( which we probably will because food was good and we truly want good food place to do well in SAn Marcos, but Come on PK... good service ishouldnt be too difficult, especially when there are like 3 people eating in the restaurant!
Great food! Great drinks!
Fun evening with great service... attended for a birthday dinner. Other than a happy birthday from the manager, no special effort was made to celebrate. The food is decent but the wine list needs some variety. Looking forward to them expanding their menu and the wine list.
Cocktails were delicious, everything was well seasoned - scallops and Wagyu beer sliders were standouts. Crab & Avocado Stack was good (crab might be a little too much mayo for some...). GREAT service, fun evening celebrating our anniversary.
I'd recommend the appetizers and desserts over the meals. I felt all was overpriced by 10-15%. That being said hopefully these are just growing pains and they will get it all worked out
We were surprised at the lack of quality in service in our return visit. As always, the food has been excellent. However, as noted on our Open Table reservation (and confirmed by our host/hostess), we designated this as a birthday celebration. We also requested our food to be delivered at once (appetizers, salads, side and main dishes). After 45 minutes post ordering, two side dishes and a child's main dish arrived. At least an hour later, the main dishes arrived. Another hour? The salad and another side dish (this was after two requests for it). There was no mention of a birthday. There were a few cheerful apologies but this did not make up for the lack of order and sense to our meal. Additionally, this was not a busy evening (in contrast to the excellent service and food at our previous visit, a highly busy Friday evening). Clearly, your service is dependent on the person who serves your table. We love the food and plan on returning. However, my dinner mates might not be as patient to accompany me in subsequent visits if this is repeated.
Ambiance was great. Taking out daughter out for one last hoorah before she went back to school. Appetizers were good. We waited a really long time for dinner. Even after the waiter apologized for the wait it was 20 more minutes after a 15-20 wait prior to this. The portion size was very small for both appetizers and dinner portion. The waiter was nice.
Excellent food. We loved the ambience as well as the quality of all the dishes. The wine list needs a lot of improvement. Other than that a wonderful addition to the North County dining scene.
Great meal - food was awesome - server was super nice -but either over worked or disorganized - couldn’t tell which - was trying, but service this time was slow.
Very nice restaurant with a varied menu. Service was excellent. Drinks are pricey but nice variety. Would eat here again for sure.
We love Prep Kitchen down in Little Italy and were excited that one opened up in North County. Food and cocktails are on point. Service is great for a new restaurant and will probably be exceptional once they get in their groove.
The restaurant is in an area that is currently being developed and will be a hot spot once residents move in. For now, we’ll enjoy the hidden gem.
The cocktails were not very strong. The salad was small, and everything was just overpriced. The hash brown with fish on top was a great appetizer!
Perfect date night spot, sharing a bunch of small plates and cocktails. Id rate the service 6 or 7 stars if possible- the hostess, our waiter, and the manager gave exceptional service. The manager brought us a free salad because one of our plates “took longer than it should have,” but honestly we didnt notice. Will be back again soon.
Very attentive waitor, overly polite and complimentary verging on annoying. Food was on the bland side lacking seasoning but good quality and portions. Prices a bit high. Surcharge added for minimum wage feels greedy. Should just add it to the prices. Probably won't go back.
Food was amazing but the service was very slow.
Wife and I were very impressed with the ambience, quality cocktails and very clean tasty food. Type of place I look forward to re visiting!
We are Prep Kitchen fans. This new North County location does not disappoint. Food and drinks are awesome. Great service. Vibrant atmosphere.
Had a pretty bad experience but got a call this morning from the owner of the restaurant group who listened to all of our concerns and invited us to come back and try it out again. Will update after our next visit, hopefully goes well.
It was our first time to a Prep Kitchen. Nice to finally see good quality meals and finer dinning restaurants in North County San Diego. We will definitely be back soon!
Service was disappointing. Restaurant was understaffed. 2 of the 3 dishes were fair at best. I will say the creamed farrow was fantastic. Service was slow and we repeatedly had to ask for water refills. They utilize a tablet for ordering and it is very impersonal even though its with the waiter. Food was overpriced for the portions provided.
The food was great. Was dining with 2 young children and the waitstaff was very helpful and friendly to the kids. Gave them a good menu and activities too.
We will return and so happy to have such a great restaurant in San Marcos!
Second visit. Portions are good sized (not overly generous, but enough to share), drinks are expensive, service is attentive and professional. Interesting and delicious combinations and flavors. Be brave and order something that sounds different - you'll likely love it!
We can recommend the crab stack, spinach salad, and scallops or squid. Dessert menu is too limited - need more options to compliment the variety of the main menu. The affogato was really good, but the pressed coffee was lukewarm and weak.
After reading the reviews that were very mixed we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is hip and modern, the server was very attentive and knowledgeable. And best of all the food was delicious. We had a party of 7 so was able to try appetizer pasta and drinks. Everything (except maybe the fried chicken bites) was delicious. The fried chicken bites were good but need an interesting sauce to go with them.
The shareable portion of the menu is more extensive than the entrees. Made my wife mention that they might be more aggressively looking for the drink & a snack type of crowd than the dinner entree crowd. Nevertheless it is still great food. Great environment, but parking currently is tight and confusing.
Awesome experience! That food was amazing and our server was great!
I do understand they have only been open for six weeks, but one would think by now and given the track record of other Prep Kitchens, Whisknladle, and Catania that they would have their act together. Sadly, they don’t... kitchen was behind all night long with different courses coming out late. Our server “Eric” stayed on top of things for the most part, but never explained why it was taking so long. Final straw was waiting 30 minutes for our desserts to not show up. How hard is it to scoop ice cream? I told Eric to cancel our desserts as I didn’t have the time and/or patience to wait any longer. No, “I’m sorry”, just a truly half-hearted “they were just coming out...”. On our way out I stopped by the entrance and asked the hostess if I could talk with the manager. Well, Eric had followed me to the front and prior to the hostess responding told me “the manager is in the kitchen helping out and unavailable”. As I started my drive home I called the restaurant and asked (again) to talk with the manager. After a long delay the hostess got back on the phone and said “the manager wants to know what the call is for”? I tried as politely as possible to explain to her that I was a recent customer and wanted to talk with him. After another lengthy delay the manager Lucas abruptly got on the phone and asked “who is this”? I explained to him what occurred and got the standard “we would love to have you come back in...”, but no I’m sorry. That’s when I realized the issue with Prep Kitchen San Marcos is much larger than just Eric our server. If the restaurant manager treats customers so poorly, then what type of an example is that for the rest of the staff?
We were all very impressed with the new Prepkitchen in San Marcos. The setting was nice and the food was excellent. I had the Pasta Bolognese, which was one of best plates of pasta I have had in a long time. My brother-in-law had the Seared Scallops. He had a had a similar dish earlier in the week at another restaurant (with much high prices) and he said that these scallops were better. I would highly recommend the Prepkitchen in San Marcos!
Food was great...service pretty good. Noise level was crazy..could not even talk to the person next to you. This was a weeknight and it was about half full. Cannot imagine what it would be like if it were full. The couple we were with said it was overwhelming and they would not return.
Mediocre and expensive. Chicken
