Food was amazing but the service was very slow.
Wife and I were very impressed with the ambience, quality cocktails and very clean tasty food. Type of place I look forward to re visiting!
We are Prep Kitchen fans. This new North County location does not disappoint. Food and drinks are awesome. Great service. Vibrant atmosphere.
Had a pretty bad experience but got a call this morning from the owner of the restaurant group who listened to all of our concerns and invited us to come back and try it out again. Will update after our next visit, hopefully goes well.
It was our first time to a Prep Kitchen. Nice to finally see good quality meals and finer dinning restaurants in North County San Diego. We will definitely be back soon!
Service was disappointing. Restaurant was understaffed. 2 of the 3 dishes were fair at best. I will say the creamed farrow was fantastic. Service was slow and we repeatedly had to ask for water refills. They utilize a tablet for ordering and it is very impersonal even though its with the waiter. Food was overpriced for the portions provided.
The food was great. Was dining with 2 young children and the waitstaff was very helpful and friendly to the kids. Gave them a good menu and activities too.
We will return and so happy to have such a great restaurant in San Marcos!
Second visit. Portions are good sized (not overly generous, but enough to share), drinks are expensive, service is attentive and professional. Interesting and delicious combinations and flavors. Be brave and order something that sounds different - you'll likely love it!
We can recommend the crab stack, spinach salad, and scallops or squid. Dessert menu is too limited - need more options to compliment the variety of the main menu. The affogato was really good, but the pressed coffee was lukewarm and weak.
After reading the reviews that were very mixed we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is hip and modern, the server was very attentive and knowledgeable. And best of all the food was delicious. We had a party of 7 so was able to try appetizer pasta and drinks. Everything (except maybe the fried chicken bites) was delicious. The fried chicken bites were good but need an interesting sauce to go with them.
The shareable portion of the menu is more extensive than the entrees. Made my wife mention that they might be more aggressively looking for the drink & a snack type of crowd than the dinner entree crowd. Nevertheless it is still great food. Great environment, but parking currently is tight and confusing.
Awesome experience! That food was amazing and our server was great!
I do understand they have only been open for six weeks, but one would think by now and given the track record of other Prep Kitchens, Whisknladle, and Catania that they would have their act together. Sadly, they don’t... kitchen was behind all night long with different courses coming out late. Our server “Eric” stayed on top of things for the most part, but never explained why it was taking so long. Final straw was waiting 30 minutes for our desserts to not show up. How hard is it to scoop ice cream? I told Eric to cancel our desserts as I didn’t have the time and/or patience to wait any longer. No, “I’m sorry”, just a truly half-hearted “they were just coming out...”. On our way out I stopped by the entrance and asked the hostess if I could talk with the manager. Well, Eric had followed me to the front and prior to the hostess responding told me “the manager is in the kitchen helping out and unavailable”. As I started my drive home I called the restaurant and asked (again) to talk with the manager. After a long delay the hostess got back on the phone and said “the manager wants to know what the call is for”? I tried as politely as possible to explain to her that I was a recent customer and wanted to talk with him. After another lengthy delay the manager Lucas abruptly got on the phone and asked “who is this”? I explained to him what occurred and got the standard “we would love to have you come back in...”, but no I’m sorry. That’s when I realized the issue with Prep Kitchen San Marcos is much larger than just Eric our server. If the restaurant manager treats customers so poorly, then what type of an example is that for the rest of the staff?
We were all very impressed with the new Prepkitchen in San Marcos. The setting was nice and the food was excellent. I had the Pasta Bolognese, which was one of best plates of pasta I have had in a long time. My brother-in-law had the Seared Scallops. He had a had a similar dish earlier in the week at another restaurant (with much high prices) and he said that these scallops were better. I would highly recommend the Prepkitchen in San Marcos!
Food was great...service pretty good. Noise level was crazy..could not even talk to the person next to you. This was a weeknight and it was about half full. Cannot imagine what it would be like if it were full. The couple we were with said it was overwhelming and they would not return.
Mediocre and expensive. Chicken
A nice place for.a casual dinner. I ordered the chicken and it was pretty tough but very tasty. Also ordered the meat and cheese plate appetizer which was right sized and a nice assortment. For dessert the blueberry upside down cake with the vanilla ice cream was excellent. I will certainly add this to my list of places to enjoy a nice evening.
Good cocktails. Waiter made great recommendations that were very tasty. Kids menu was hit with our son, and the s’mores dessert was a enjoyed by me, but my spouse found it too smoky.
Great food, drinks, and service! We sat at the bar and enjoyed everything. Happy hour is a great deal. Burger and bolognese were phenomenal. We will be back!
The food was very good, but small portions for the price, 90 min for appetizers and salad, and loud. Great ambiance, and might recommend depending on what the occasion was. Too many restaurants nearby with equal quality, better service and also good ambiance.
Food was just ok. Service was terrible. Seemed like our waiter never worked at a restaurant before. Manager was nice and tried making it up to us. Nice atmosphere. Maybe too new of a restaurant and they need to get it together
Food was very good (bolognese pasta, sliders) but service was slow. Not many people in the place but noise level was very high--hard to converse.
Martin was outstanding
We really enjoyed our first visit to Prep Kitchen. We tried several different dishes and were happy with all of them. The drink menu is in a book, while a cute idea, we found it unnecessary and difficult to flip through. The table for 2 was a bit on the small side. The good news is, we will be back!
Great new spot in San Marcos North county ~ Little Italy vibe
Great concept, great vibe, relaxing, nice patio. New and clean. Some foods were fantastic, cool presentation but some food was a disappointment especially for a small menu. Hoping it will improve after they’ve been open for some time.
When we went here, it was not ready for prime time, maybe not even a soft opening. Father's Day was a pretty big mess. Service started well (at 5:30) but we told our waiter that we had theater tix (in Escondido) and had to be out by 7:00. They couldn't handle a 1.5 hour deadline. The kitchen was not only inefficient but 1/2 of the food was awful. The value was terrible and we've never experienced that from any PrepKitchen restaurant or Catania. They don't seem to get that if you're going to sous-vide rib eye, it still needs a good sear--this was half-seared and overdone but by the time it was served, it was too late to send back. Other dishes were meh. Petit Filet with horseradish glaze was tasteless and the sauce sticky-sweet (no bite and no trace of horseradish). Pasta Bolognese was good (as always) but presented poorly. Wayyyyy too much hickory smoke with the beet/peach salad. Subltey was missing. Appetizers were better than mains or salads although the hamachi tartare was pedestrian and the Vietnamese chicken was underseasoned. Horrible wine list. Had to ask for serving spoons (we shared a lot) and water multiple times. The host offered free deserts but we were running late and only had one. Again, meh. We didn't order it but showcasing three scoops of McConnell's ice cream that we can buy at a local Vons was a bit insulting to list on a dessert menu. The table of 5-6 next to us had an even worse experience and was fuming. On the way out, I asked for guidance to the restroom from the four people lounging around the host station and an overly enthusiast waitperson said, "Sweetie Pie, I'll take you there." I didn't appreciate the familiarity/condescension. Note to managers: Would you call my husband "Sweetie Pie?" This restaurant is way overpriced and mediocre. Note to the manager on duty: Stop apologizing and start supplementing the service if you have any restaurant management chops.
Great to have a Prep Kitchen in North County SD!!! Beautiful place, great ambiance. Reception and Service were super friendly and helpful. Food was great. We’ll be back.
Our first visit to the new Prepkitchen San Marcos was terrible. OVERPRICED, SLOW SERVICE, UPPITY SERVER. Food was barely passable. 15 minutes to get our soups and 45 minutes to get our entrees. Corn Chowder with Bacon was bland and lukewarm. Pasta Bolognese was mediocre. Roasted Chicken did not have crispy skin and got two breasts with wings rather than a true 1/2 chicken. A few fingerling potatoes and a few sugar snap peas. Roasted tomatoes and asparagus were good. $4 a drink for hot tea and iced tea. Place was noisy as hell and our table was right next to an open roll-up door and I was freezing the whole evening, which was to be my Father's Day dinner, which I made a point of I'm my Open Table reservation. Apparently Prepkitchen never got the message or didn't care. $80 for the 2 meals above. MUCH better value with better food is Pizza Nova in San Marcos!
Definitely lacking the ambiance of other prep kitchen locations. Food was excellent as most of them are. Portions did seem smaller however at this location. Service started off great but seemed to get behind and overwhelmed towards the end. Food is great but in comparison to other prep kitchen locations this is a step down.
My husband and I had a date night. The food and cocktails were very good. The service was fantastic. The atmosphere was very lively. We had a great night.
Lots of credit to Darren and the whole staff at Prepkitchen. Four of us went right after they opened, and there was a mix up with my friend's order. They took care of his whole order, and even invited us all back to make sure we had a great experience. Food and drinks have all been top notch, and everyone we've talked to has been really friendly. Definitely a great addition to San Marcos, and we look forward to going back soon!
I am SO happy that Prepkitchen came to San Marcos! They have only been open a few days and are still working out the kinks - but the food and cocktails were delicious and all the employees were really trying their best. Our server Cannon was great! Even with the few delays in getting our food/drinks, it is already one of the best places to eat in San Marcos. Prepkitchen is a very welcome addition to the San Marcos restaurant scene (if you can call it a "scene") and we will definitely be back on a regular basis!
Excellent service and outstanding food!!!
