PRAIRIE is a contemporary-casual restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District from beloved Bay Area chef, Anthony Strong. Our roots are in classic, rustic Italian fare, but we love to let loose and experiment with an expanded pantry. You’re likely to discover surprising new ingredients that aren’t traditionally found in Italian cooking but have similar flavor profiles.
We believe food doesn’t have to look beautiful to be delicious, and sometimes ours will be downright unphotogenic. We hope you dig in before reaching to take a snapshot with your phone. Sit back, eat with your hands, enjoy yourselves your friends. Our full bar offers both original cocktails and creative takes on perennial classics. Our wine list is primarily Italian with additional reserve selections found on our constantly updated Instagram @thereservelist. You can also find us @prairie. If you are wondering, the restaurant is named after the Chef/Owner’s high sc
Excellent atmosphere and a great spot for brunch in the Mission. Anthony is a marvelous chef & owner and has created an amazing menu. Nice touch with listing items that are Keto friendly too!
Visited from London - staff were friendly and passionate about the food. The items we ordered were delicious. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy, exciting restaurant.
Excellent food with a creative blend of flavors. Staff was attentive and courteous. Will definitely be back!
It took over an hour for any portion of our food to begin arriving after ordering. While we were comped something random off of the menu to hold us over while we continued to wait, which was appreciated, one of the items that we had to check the status on three times (twice with our server and once with the host) never arrived. We ended up being at the restaurant for close to 3 hours(!) which was not part of our goal. The food is good, the drinks are good, but the service was terrible and we all have a pretty high tolerance for varied levels of service.
One of the best meals I’ve had in SF in years.
Loved our brunch at Prairie! We started off by sharing the kale salad which was super well dressed and seasoned. My friend had the oven-baked eggs which she loved, while I went with the pressed omelet sandwich which was delicious!! Will definitely be coming back to Prairie, hopefully to check out their dinner too! Highly recommend!
What a neighborhood gem! I decided this spot was my new favorite place before the food even arrived. After being greeted by a authentically warm hostess, and walking to our table, the size/scale, lighting, color, and music of the dining room all felt like a perfect place to hang out and enjoy a great meal. The menu listed tempting and creative options and I decided very quickly on what to order, as I knew we'd be back to sample the rest. The await staff was friendly and helpful, and only there when we needed them. The food, as expected, was perfection. Feeling a bit reckless, we knowingly over-ordered, thinking we'd take home whatever we didn't eat, but there was little to box up in the end - it was just too good. The Mussels were especially fantastic - plump and fresh and the most deliciously seasoned broth. Everything, including desert, was unique and delicious. Thank you Prairie - can't wait to see you again!
Food was of good quality but prices were absurd -- e.g., $13 for a small breakfast waffle, add $4 for strawberries. Offensive. Service was pleasant. Interior was too loud (but probably average for SF restaurants at lunch), whereas street-side tables offered a more agreeable ambient volume. Overall I would not recommend due to stratospheric pricing / inadequate value.
Absolutely phenomenal food. Fresh, rustic, perfectly seasoned and cooked,,bid flavors, and a unique vision. This is a truly great chef. Fun vibe, cool space but friendly, good music, very sweet service . SF has changed. This independent, local, really personal, and authentic jewel is the best SF, the one with soul. And I RARELY write reviews. Am hesitant to share, but this place needs to thrive.
3rd time and it keeps getting better.
Love Prairie!! I've been a few times for dinner and it keeps getting better and better.
Friendly, non-pretentious service! Relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, delicious food with generous portions.
Every time is better and better.
The service is impeccable, some of the most friendly and thoughtful waitstaff I’ve ever experienced. The flavors are unique and bold. The grilled octopus was smoky and tender. The burrata was to die for. The cocktails are reflective of the overall experience, just delicious!
Everything was excellent. Food was interesting and inventive. Service was excellent as last visit was also.
This was our second meal at Prairie. First was dinner, with notable food all around. The food is often cooked in their wood oven--very tasty, with a strong contemporary Italian sensibility. Pasta is superb but not a main course, lots of small plates and larger entrees. We loved everything. The atmosphere is pretty loud and vibrant at night, thanks in part to a very lively bar scene. Sunday breakfast was much quieter, sunny windows open to the street. Tasty--oven-baked eggs with romano beans in a delectable Calabrian tomato sauce, and many other dishes. Interesting brunch drinks (alcoholic with cool mixers, nonalcoholic and unusual). Prairie is not cheap, but the quality of food and service is worth it. Drinks add a lot to the tab.
Great ambience and wonderful, friendly service. Good was absolutely amazing and comes out family style so everyone can try everything!
Good menu and everything was well-prepared. Certain dishes were so good that they made the other also delicious things not seem that special, which is just a good sign all around. Friendly and helpful staff as well.
Fun but a bit disappointing and a poor value, especially the shared rib steaks which was 60% fat and just a few slices for $65.
Terrible service. Took 2.5 hrs to get all our dishes with up to an hour gap between dishes. Had to ask 3-4 people for things like bread after our server stopped coming by our table. Some great dishes like the lamb, pasta and corn. Eggplant was not good as were the Roman beans. Way to expensive for the food and service. Hard pass.
Anthony Strong knocks it out of the park with his interpretation of Italian with deep flavors and the liberal use of the coal grill and oven to develop flavors you could not get any other way.
Had the destroyed bread, whole roasted cauliflower, charcoal kissed octopus, campfire spice lamb chops and chefs cut steak - all were amazing and delicious.
Lots of vegetarian dishes which my wife really enjoyed.
Love this place.
The food at PRAIRIE is impeccable! The service was amazing. The staff was super attentive, fun, and gave us great suggestions on the menu. We ended up ordering a lot, which is why it’s fun to go with chef friends cause they’re always down to eat all the foods! We also unlocked their secret menu Golden Ticket, which is a cool thing they do at the restaurant. We won a free order of Taglierini with Santa Barbara Uni and Salmon Roe that my friend and I are going to use the next time we go! Definitely going back again (this was my second time there and every time the food has been perfection!)
Very nice restaurant, loved the chargrill menu, just on the pricey side.
The waffles!!!! Savory and sweet at the same time. 😍
Food was decent and innovative - but overpriced
Waitress barely checked in on our table
She ended up packing bacon and sweet toast in the same box when asked the two separate plates to go - which didn't make sense.
Sub par “protein menu” (you can grill the same
stuff at home!) Prices are just outrageous. Food wait time was over an hour and we were among the first ones at 5:30 when they opened. Wine was acidic and Barry drinkable yet > $15. “6% SF tax” tagged to our bill. I thought this was 3% (folks should double check) you just order a side if you are going to have a dinner sides are >$11. Never. Again.
We enjoyed the food and the ambience and warm atmosphere. The service was excellent! A rare experience these days of poor inexperienced service.
Food was most delicious, flavorful and of top quality
execution of dishes was excellent, everything perfectly cooked
Pacing was good, not rushed or slow
Will return soon
Great restaurant! Beautiful ambience and even better Food! The avocado salad was the table fav. Highly recommend trying all of the side dishes.
The food was excellent. The service was adequate but could have been more attentive. The noise level once the restaurant was almost full was loud. My friend and I were almost yelling to each other. The crowd was much younger than my friend and I so maybe the noise level isn’t a distraction for younger people. Looked like the majority of the diners were under 40.
Amazing XO sauce, love the flavor and texture combination. Outstanding for something like this in SF
The food was great but the service was not the best; they confused our table's food with others and couldn't get it right without us talking to the waitresses.
The veggie dishes in particular are standouts..the cauliflower and the cabbage were smokey and flavor packed and were great companions to the meat dishes on the menu.
What a special experience! The manager and staff were very accommodating and friendly. The food was unique and delicious! We could not ask for a better dinner out!
The execution of the dishes is exquisite. If the ingredients appeal, the dish will delight
This was my third visit. Best meal ever!! Great service, excellently made cocktails, very good value Nebbiolo, and outstanding food. Loved the grilled avocado, destroyed bread with early girl tomatoes, very well executed and yummy butchers steak (perfectly medium rare),and excellent grilled peppers. Could have ordered the entire menu. Yum!!! 5 stars guys!! Well done!!!
Some of the most innovative and satisfying food in SF. Loved it.
Everything was good, except service was kind of slow.
For what you get it’s the best deal on fancy weekend brunch in town. Truly you get to feel like a king for 20$ more than you’d pay at a Cheesecake Factory
