PRAIRIE is a contemporary-casual restaurant in San Francisco’s Mission District from beloved Bay Area chef, Anthony Strong. Our roots are in classic, rustic Italian fare, but we love to let loose and experiment with an expanded pantry. You’re likely to discover surprising new ingredients that aren’t traditionally found in Italian cooking but have similar flavor profiles.

We believe food doesn’t have to look beautiful to be delicious, and sometimes ours will be downright unphotogenic. We hope you dig in before reaching to take a snapshot with your phone. The servers were very nice, but understaffed for the Friday night crowd. Part of our order was lost in the shuffle, and arrived only after a very long wait; "communication problem with the kitchen," according to the apologetic server. The noise level was painful: hard surfaces and loud people everywhere, and all seats are extremely close together. A sharp cold wind blew through the whole restaurant every time the door opened ... and it sometimes stayed open for a while. The dishes were OK, but not spectacular. E.g., charred cabbage "with scallop butter" tasted like cabbage with butter and burnt edges; delicious, but no hint of scallop.

We really liked the concept and execution. Several things were wonderfully executed. The savory ‘nduja on toast, the marrow bone and those gorgeous mussels. The steak was on point and with perfect accompaniments. That die-for maple-y birthday cake could be upped yet another notch with smoked maple (it’s a thing...) One note : the bread was delicious in all it’s variations, just too much by the time we were done. Will surely go back!

Got a recommendation from a friend. The food was mediocre. We got a salad, grilled bone marrow. My friend got the steak. And I got lamb chop. The salad was ok. The best dish was the bone marrow on sweet bread. The entrees were very meat heavy , with little other stuff( like veggies or sauce). My friend’s dish was just steak and grilled onion. Nothing else. It was not well balanced. We wished the waitress have told us that so we could have order more veggies sides. I would not come back there. Overall 3 stars at best.

Great vegetarian and seafood! The theme is charcoal grilled food. The savoy cabbage in scallop butter was delicious. So was the papardelle. We also enjoyed the grilled avocado salad. For dessert we had a chocolate pudding with an Earl Gray whipped cream and a vinaigrette caramel. It was delicious

My daughter and I really enjoyed our evening at Prairie. We love sharing so the shared plates were great for us. We had the burrata and bread (yum), steam (cooked perfectly and very tasty), sweet potatoes (a little too much vinegar) and the pappardelle with mushroom sauce (gorgeous). The waitress suggested a lovely glass of wine for me too, which paired perfectly with the food we ordered.

Great spot! The food was fantastic and the cocktail menu was great too. Will need to go back and try the spare ribs next time. The staff was knowledgeable and accommodating.

I legit loved this place! Their cocktails are delicious, the food is to die for (those spare ribs are a must) and the service was on point. Definitely coming back to try more their food and drinks. Highly recommend.

Amazing!! My fiancee and her family celebrated our engagement there and got the prefix menu, was just divine, all family style grilled octopus, butcher steak, cabbage.

Went with my wife to celebrate our anniversary, our waiter received us with two glasses of sparkling wine witch was very nice, food was unique , the sweet potato was my favorite, we order the cabbage with a side of XO sauce.

Made same day reservations for 2 via open table for a Wednesday night. I arrived promptly for my 6:30 pm reservation. My friend was still looking for parking but I was seated right away. I was the only person in the restaurant at that time but by the time my friend arrived - closer to 6:50 pm, it was half filled.

Our server was lovely and attentive but I never felt rushed (even though we stayed until 10:30 pm) even while I was waiting for my friend.

We ordered the flash grilled avocado, sour cream and onion burrata, puntarelle green goddess, pappardelle and dessert. The avocado had a lovely citrus flavor to it and was lightly sprinkled with salt and pepper.

The burrata dish came with three pieces of toast and a generous helping of burrata. We could taste the sour cream and onion without it overpowering the burrata.

Neither of us have had puntarelle before but it was a nice hearty salad with a bit of crunch due to the puntarelle itself.

Not pictured was the pappardelle which we liked (the pasta was cooked perfectly) but we forgot to add the chanterelle sauce which is $3 extra. I wish our server reminded us but it’s not her fault as it is written next to the pasta itself. We just both overlooked.

Since we were celebrating my friend’s belated birthday, we got the Yuzu Ice Box Pie with Huckleberry sauce. Yuzu has a very distinct flavor (which I enjoy). It was like a Yuzu meringue pie. I had written on open table that we were celebrating a birthday but when the dessert came out there was no candle even though we saw others at the restaurant celebrating. It wasn’t a huge deal but our server came by later with two flutes of champagne to apologize for the oversight. I thought was very sweet of her and more than made up for it.

I did notice that they have a Yuzu beer, yuzu soda and a Yuzu whiskey, so for Yuzu lovers, there’s plenty try. And although we were not vegetarians, we happened to end up eating only veggies but everything was yummy.

I have had a great experience recently so decided to go back. The food was still very good. The service this time was abysmal. Our server seemed annoyed with us from the start. One of our meals wasn’t delivered and there was no communication. It took us getting the host’s attention before the situation was solved. Our server never acknowledged the problem and seemed to actively avoid the table. We got a ‘sorry’ from the manager but no offer to make things right. There is a serious training issue here.

Our reservation on-line was for 4. We called the restaurant a day later and changed to 5 people. The person confirmed and asked which we prefer low or high table? We selected low.
When we arrived they still had 4 and only had high table!
However, to compensate for these errors they did not charge us for one cork fee! That plus the quality of food and ambiance made the overall experience pleasant. So we will go back!
